Supersymmetrization of horizontality condition: nilpotent symmetries for a free spinning relativistic particle
We derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting
Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for a
supersymmetric system of a free spinning relativistic particle within the
framework of superfield approach to BRST formalism. A novel feature of our
present investigation is the consistent and clear supersymmetric modification
of the celebrated horizontality condition for the precise determination of the
proper (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for all the bosonic and fermionic
dynamical variables of our theory which is considered on a (1, 2)-dimensional
supermanifold parameterized by an even (bosonic) variable (\tau) and a pair of
odd (fermionic) variables \theta and \bar\theta (with \theta^2 = \bar\theta^2 =
0,\; \theta \bar\theta + \bar\theta \theta = 0) of the Grassmann algebra. One
of the most important features of our present investigation is the derivation
of (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari type restriction which turns out to be
responsible for the absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-)BRST symmetry
transformations and existence of the coupled (but equivalent) Lagrangians for
the present theory of a supersymmetric system.Comment: LaTeX file, 24 pages, version to appear in EPJ
Quantum phase transition of dynamical resistance in a mesoscopic capacitor
We study theoretically dynamic response of a mesoscopic capacitor, which
consists of a quantum dot connected to an electron reservoir via a point
contact and capacitively coupled to a gate voltage. A quantum Hall edge state
with a filling factor nu is realized in a strong magnetic field applied
perpendicular to the two-dimensional electron gas. We discuss a noise-driven
quantum phase transition of the transport property of the edge state by taking
into account an ohmic bath connected to the gate voltage. Without the noise,
the charge relaxation for nu>1/2 is universally quantized at R_q=h/(2e^2),
while for nu<1/2, the system undergoes the Kosterlitz-Thouless transtion, which
drastically changes the nature of the dynamical resistance. The phase
transition is facilitated by the noisy gate voltage, and we see that it can
occur even for an integer quantum Hall edge at nu=1. When the dissipation by
the noise is sufficiently small, the quantized value of R_q is shifted by the
bath impedance.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, proceeding of the 19th International Conference

Augmented Superfield Approach To Unique Nilpotent Symmetries For Complex Scalar Fields In QED
The derivation of the exact and unique nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin
(BRST)- and anti-BRST symmetries for the matter fields, present in any
arbitrary interacting gauge theory, has been a long-standing problem in the
framework of superfield approach to BRST formalism. These nilpotent symmetry
transformations are deduced for the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) complex
scalar fields, coupled to the U(1) gauge field, in the framework of augmented
superfield formalism. This interacting gauge theory (i.e. QED) is considered on
a six (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold parametrized by four even spacetime
coordinates and a couple of odd elements of the Grassmann algebra. In addition
to the horizontality condition (that is responsible for the derivation of the
exact nilpotent symmetries for the gauge field and the (anti-)ghost fields), a
new restriction on the supermanifold, owing its origin to the (super) covariant
derivatives, has been invoked for the derivation of the exact nilpotent
symmetry transformations for the matter fields. The geometrical interpretations
for all the above nilpotent symmetries are discussed, too.Comment: LaTeX file, 17 pages, journal versio
An Alternative To The Horizontality Condition In Superfield Approach To BRST Symmetries
We provide an alternative to the gauge covariant horizontality condition
which is responsible for the derivation of the nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry
transformations for the gauge and (anti-)ghost fields of a (3 + 1)-dimensional
(4D) interacting 1-form non-Abelian gauge theory in the framework of the usual
superfield approach to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism. The above
covariant horizontality condition is replaced by a gauge invariant restriction
on the (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold, parameterized by a set of four
spacetime coordinates x^\mu (\mu = 0, 1, 2, 3) and a pair of Grassmannian
variables \theta and \bar\theta. The latter condition enables us to derive the
nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for all the fields of an
interacting 4D 1-form non-Abelian gauge theory where there is an explicit
coupling between the gauge field and the Dirac fields. The key differences and
striking similarities between the above two conditions are pointed out clearly.Comment: LaTeX file, 20 pages, journal versio
High dietary salt does not significantly affect plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations of Sprague Dawley rats

Abstract

Background

The Dahl salt-sensitive rat, but not the Dahl salt-resistant rat, develops hypertension and hypovitaminosis D when fed a high salt diet. Since the salt-sensitive rat and salt-resistant rat were bred from the Sprague Dawley rat, the aim of this research was to test the hypothesis that salt-resistant and Sprague Dawley rats would be similar in their vitamin D endocrine system response to high salt intake.

Findings

Sprague Dawley, salt-sensitive, and salt-resistant rats were fed high (80 g/kg, 8%) or low (3 g/kg, 3%) salt diets for three weeks. The blood pressure of Sprague Dawley rats increased from baseline to week 3 during both high and low salt intake and the mean blood pressure at week 3 of high salt intake was higher than that at week 3 of low salt intake (<it>P </it>< 0.05). Mean plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations (marker of vitamin D status) of Sprague Dawley, salt-sensitive, and salt-resistant rats were similar at week 3 of low salt intake. Mean plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations of Sprague Dawley and salt-resistant rats were unaffected by high salt intake, whereas the mean plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration of salt-sensitive rats at week 3 of high salt intake was only 20% of that at week 3 of low salt intake.

Conclusions

These data indicate that the effect of high salt intake on the vitamin D endocrine system of Sprague Dawley rats at week 3 was similar to that of salt-resistant rats. The salt-sensitive rat, thus, appears to be a more appropriate model than the Sprague Dawley rat for assessing possible effects of salt-sensitivity on vitamin D status of humans.</p
Children's suggestibility in relation to their understanding about sources of knowledge
In the experiments reported here, children chose either to maintain their initial belief about an object's identity or to accept the experimenter's contradicting suggestion. Both 3â to 4âyearâolds and 4â to 5âyearâolds were good at accepting the suggestion only when the experimenter was better informed than they were (implicit source monitoring). They were less accurate at recalling both their own and the experimenter's information access (explicit recall of experience), though they performed well above chance. Children were least accurate at reporting whether their final belief was based on what they were told or on what they experienced directly (explicit source monitoring). Contrasting results emerged when children decided between contradictory suggestions from two differentially informed adults: Threeâ to 4âyearâolds were more accurate at reporting the knowledge source of the adult they believed than at deciding which suggestion was reliable. Decision making in this observation task may require reflective understanding akin to that required for explicit source judgments when the child participates in the task
Thermally Activated Dynamics of the Capillary Condensation
This paper is devoted to the thermally activated dynamics of the capillary
condensation. We present a simple model which enables us to identify the
critical nucleus involved in the transition mechanism. This simple model is
then applied to calculate the nucleation barrier from which we can obtain
informations on the nucleation time. We present a simple estimation of the
nucleation barrier in slab geometry both in the two dimensional case and in the
three dimensional case. We extend the model in the case of rough surfaces which
is closer to the experimental case and allows comparison with experimental
datas.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Submitted to J. Phys. : Condens. Matter,

Variable range hopping and quantum creep in one dimension
We study the quantum non linear response to an applied electric field of
a one dimensional pinned charge density wave or Luttinger liquid in presence of
disorder. From an explicit construction of low lying metastable states and of
bounce instanton solutions between them, we demonstrate quantum creep as well as a sharp crossover at towards a linear response
form consistent with variable range hopping arguments, but dependent only on
electronic degrees of freedom
Algebraic structure of gravity in Ashtekar variables
The BRST transformations for gravity in Ashtekar variables are obtained by
using the Maurer-Cartan horizontality conditions. The BRST cohomology in
Ashtekar variables is calculated with the help of an operator
introduced by S.P. Sorella, which allows to decompose the exterior derivative
as a BRST commutator. This BRST cohomology leads to the differential invariants
for four-dimensional manifolds.Comment: 19 pages, report REF. TUW 94-1
