Adhesive bonding and the use of corrosion resistant primers
The use of an anti-corrosive primer has been shown to be essential to assure survival of a bonded structure in a hostile environment, particularly if a stress is to be applied to the adhesively bonded joint during the environmental exposure. Lyman Alpha and MgII as Probes of Galaxies and their Environments
Ly{\alpha} emission, Ly{\alpha} absorption and MgII absorption are powerful
tracers of neutral hydrogen. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the
universe and plays a central role in galaxy formation via gas accretion and
outflows, as well as being the precursor to molecular clouds, the sites of star
formation. Since 21cm emission from neutral hydrogen can only be directly
observed in the local universe, we rely on Ly{\alpha} emission, and Ly{\alpha}
and MgII absorption to probe the physics that drives galaxy evolution at higher
redshifts. Furthermore, these tracers are sensitive to a range of hydrogen
densities that cover the interstellar medium, the circumgalactic medium and the
intergalactic medium, providing an invaluable means of studying gas physics in
regimes where it is poorly understood. At high redshift, Ly{\alpha} emission
line searches have discovered thousands of star-forming galaxies out to z = 7.
The large Ly{\alpha} scattering cross-section makes observations of this line
sensitive to even very diffuse gas outside of galaxies. Several thousand more
high-redshift galaxies are known from damped Ly{\alpha} absorption lines and
absorption by the MgII doublet in quasar and GRB spectra. MgII, in particular,
probes metal-enriched neutral gas inside galaxy haloes in a wide range of
environments and redshifts (0.1 < z < 6.3), including the so-called redshift
desert. Here we review what observations and theoretical models of Ly{\alpha}
emission, Ly{\alpha} and MgII absorption have told us about the interstellar,
circumgalactic and intergalactic medium in the context of galaxy formation and

Different behaviour of the N-terminal and C-terminal fragment of proatrial natriuretic factor in plasma of healthy subjects as well as of patients with cirrhosis
N-terminal (atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) 1-98) and C-terminal (ANF 99-126) fragments of proatrial natriuretic factor (NTA and CTA, respectively) were determined in plasma of healthy subjects adopting different postures and in patients with cirrhosis. Seven healthy subjects were investigated while seated and 30 min after assuming a horizontal position. NTA plasma concentrations increased in subjects in the horizontal position (from 734±250 (SE) fmol/ml to 9021227 fmol/ml; p<0.05). In contrast, CTA plasma concentrations remained unchanged (9.2+1.3 fmol/ml vs 8.9±1.6 fmol/ml). In 10 patients with cirrhosis of the liver, NTA concentrations were markedly (p<0.001) elevated compared to 11 healthy subjects (2334±291 fmol/ml vs 743±155 fmol/ml). However, there was no difference of CTA plasma levels between cirrhotic patients and healthy subjects (8.7±1.3 fmol/ml vs 8.2±0.9 fmol/ml). These data demonstrate changes of the plasma concentration of the N-terminal fragment of proatrial natriuretic factor by posture and in liver disease, in contrast to unchanged levels of the C-terminal fragment
The AME2003 atomic mass evaluation (I) - Evaluation of input data, adjustment procedures
This paper is the first of two parts presenting the result of a new evaluation of atomic masses (Ame2003). In this first part we give full information on the used and rejected input data and on the procedures used in deriving the tables in the second part. We first describe the philosophy and procedures used in selecting nuclear-reaction, decay, and mass spectrometric results as input values in a least-squares evaluation of best values for atomic masses. The calculation procedures and particularities of the Ame are then described. All accepted data, and rejected ones with a reported precision still of interest, are presented in a table and compared there with the adjusted values. The differences with the earlier evaluation are briefly discussed and information is given of interest for the users of this Ame. The second paper for the Ame2003, last in this issue, gives a table of atomic masses, tables and graphs of derived quantities, and the list of references used in both this evaluation and the Nubase2003 table (first paper in this issue)
Real-Time Source Independent Quantum Random Number Generator with Squeezed States
Random numbers are a fundamental ingredient for many applications including
simulation, modelling and cryptography. Sound random numbers should be
independent and uniformly distributed. Moreover, for cryptographic applications
they should also be unpredictable. We demonstrate a real-time self-testing
source independent quantum random number generator (QRNG) that uses squeezed
light as source. We generate secure random numbers by measuring the quadratures
of the electromagnetic field without making any assumptions on the source; only
the detection device is trusted. We use a homodyne detection to alternatively
measure the Q and P conjugate quadratures of our source. Using the entropic
uncertainty relation, measurements on P allow us to estimate a bound on the
min-entropy of Q conditioned on any classical or quantum side information that
a malicious eavesdropper may detain. This bound gives the minimum number of
secure bits we can extract from the Q measurement. We discuss the performance
of different estimators for this bound. We operate this QRNG with a squeezed
state and we compare its performance with a QRNG using thermal states. The
real-time bit rate was 8.2 kb/s when using the squeezed source and between
5.2-7.2 kb/s when the thermal state source was used.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure
