Call for ecclesial recognition of Bishop George Arthur Gatungu Gathuna. The founding father of the African Orthodox Church of Kenya

The African Orthodox Church of Kenya (AOCK), owes its formation and development to one Gikuyu man who later became an Orthodox priest and bishop. This man is Bishop George Arthur Gatungu Gathuna, considered and highly regarded by many locals as the father of Orthodoxy in Kenya, and an elder that impacted on many Kenyans who joined Orthodoxy in the 20th century or who became priests and church leaders from his mentorship, leaving a legacy worth studying. This study seeks to present a comprehensive past and current understanding and interpretation of the life of Bishop George by the Orthodox faithful in Kenya, highlighting both the positive contribution and the negative aspects of his life as well as his contribution to Orthodox missiology.Piispa George Arthur Gatungu Gathunan kirkollisen tunnustamisen kysymys. Useimmat itsenäiset tai riippumattomat afrikkalaiset kirkot syntyivät, kun afrikkalaiset alkoivat johtaa itse perustamiaan kirkkoja kapinoituaan ensin lähetyssaarnaajia vastaan. Näissä kirkoissa ei alkuun ollut pappeja, ja vihkimyksien järjestäminen vaati ponnisteluja. Itsenäisten kirkkojen ensimmäisillä papeilla oli runsaasti työtä, ja kirkkojen menestyminen oli riippuvainen heidän onnistumisestaan. Skotlantilaisten lähetyssaarnaajien johtamasta Keski-Kenian kirkosta irtaantunut ryhmä perusti Kenian afrikkalaisen ortodoksisen kirkon vuonna 1929. Arthur Gatungu Gathuna (sittemmin piispa George) oli Kenian kirkon ensimmäinen pappi. Ortodoksisessa perinteessä monia kirkkojen perustajia kunnioitetaan pyhinä. Heitä nimitetään sen alueen apostoleiksi tai valistajiksi, jonne he toivat kristinuskon. Näin ei kuitenkaan ole tapahtunut niiden henkilöiden kohdalla, jotka olivat osallisina ortodoksisuuden tuomiseen Itä-Afrikkaan. Tässä artikkelissa paneudutaan Kenian piispan George A.G. Gathunan toimintaan Kenian ortodoksisen kirkon synnyssä ja muotoutumisessa – elämänvaiheisiin, hengellisyyteen, kiistoihin ja lähetystyöhön sekä hänen työnsä perintöön. Artikkelissa arvioidaan hänen kirkollisen tunnustamisensa perusteita. Piispa George oli keskeinen toimija kanonisen ortodoksisen kirkon perustamisessa ja kehittämisessä Keniassa. Aleksandrian patriarkaatti ei kuitenkaan ole osoittanut häntä kohtaan erityistä kunnioitusta tai ryhtynyt toimiin hänen kanonisoimisekseen

Afrikkalainen ortodoksinen filantrooppinen diakonia Keniassa ennen COVID-19-pandemiaa ja sen aikana

Orthodox philanthropic diakonia (gospel in action initiatives) is been noted in the life, theology and mission of the Church in all ages. Starting from the biblical period, the early church and the contemporary church, the Eastern Church is witnessed practical pastoral care before, during, and after pandemics. This paper insists that the active participation of the church in pastoral and philanthropic diakonia activities outside troubled time helps build platforms for the same during the troubled times.  The African Orthodox Church of Kenya, which houses four dioceses of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa in Kenya is a good example of how its existing church philanthropic diakonia platforms directly and indirectly has helped offer humanitarian support to the Kenyan society in difficult and normal times. Some of these philanthropic diakonia activities are the reason most Orthodox Christians continue to manage their daily lives prior, during and after the first case of COVID-19 which was announced in Nairobi on 12th March 2020. This study shall seek to unveil how prior philanthropic-diakonia of the African Orthodox Church of Kenya is helped create the space for the COVID-19 philanthropic diakonia efforts of this church in this part of East Africa, as well as shed light on locally initiated philanthropic diakonia. Kirkon elämässä, teologiassa ja toiminnassa on kaikkina aikoina esiintynyt filantrooppista diakoniaa. Idän kirkko on osoittanut erityistä pastoraalista huolenpitoa pandemioitten aikana niin Raamatun aikana, varhaiskirkossa kuin nykyajassa. Tässä artikkelissa osoitetaan, että kirkon aktiivisuus pastoraalisessa ja filantrooppisessa diakoniassa normaalioloissa edesauttaa diakoniahankkeiden käynnistämistä vaikeina aikoina. Afrikkalainen ortodoksinen kirkko Keniassa (AOCK) ja sen neljä Aleksandrian kreikkalaisen patriarkaatin alaista hiippakuntaa ovat hyvä nykyhetken esimerkki ortodoksisen kirkon diakoniahankkeista. Kenian kirkko on tarjonnut yhteiskunnassa suoraa ja välillistä humanitaarista tukea normaali- ja poikkeusaikoina. Osa kirkon filantrooppisen diakonian toimista on mahdollistanut suurelle osalle ortodokseja arkielämän hallinnan jo ennen ensimmäistä COVID-19-tapausta maaliskuussa 2020. Kirkon toiminnan tarve on entisestään korostunut koronapandemian aikana ja siirryttäessä sen jälkeiseen aikaan. Deskriptiivis-tulkitsevalla otteella toteutettu artikkeli osoittaa yhtäältä millaista filantrooppista diakoniaa Kenian ortodoksinen kirkko on tehnyt COVID-19-pandemian aikana. Toisaalta se tuottaa tietoa tavasta, jolla Kenian kirkon filantrooppinen diakonia on järjestetty. Kirjallisten lähteitten rinnalla artikkelin aineiston muodostavat 39 haastattelua, jotka on tehty neljän vuoden ajalla AOCK:n johtohenkilöitten keskuudessa. Artikkeli tuottaa arvokasta tietoa diakonian malleista, joita kirkko voi hyödyntää auttaakseen jäseniään ja yhteisöään kriisiaikoina
