Microplastics threaten the ecosystem because of undesirable properties such as non-biodegradability, easy-to-absorb persistant organic compounds, etc. They are found worldwide in marine, fresh water and beach sand environments. In this study, microplastics in beach sand samples from two sites in Tien Giang province and two sites in Vung Tau city were investigated. The results showed that the microplastics amount was 0 to 295 pieces/kg dry sand and they mainly distributed near estuarine areas. Microplastics were more prevalent at bathing sites than non-bathing sites. In Tien Giang fragments were the most dominant among the three types of shapes (fragments, fibers, granules) at 60.2%. In Vung Tau granules were most prevalent at 71.7%. The composition of the plastics was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. It was revealed that PE, PP and PS were the main types of plastics found in the sampling sites.

Due to the globalization, there has been a great demand for learning English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in different fields. How to teach medical terminology effectively to pre-service medical professionals is one of the main challenges that ESP instructors encounter in their English in Medicine classrooms. A variety of factors, including but are not limited to student learning style preference, prior knowledge, classroom facilities should be considered. In this study, we conducted a case study of 20 students in an ESP class to explore their learning style preference. This study employed two data collection instruments: questionnaire and interview. Data analysis interestingly revealed that the location of students’ secondary education has an influence on their perceptual learning style preference of medical terminology at tertiary level. Drawing on the results, this study argues for a balance between student learning preference and teaching mythology. OPTICAL BISTABILITY IN A DEGENERATE TWO-LEVEL EIT MEDIUM UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF AN EXTERNAL MAGNETIC FIELD: AN ANALYTICAL APPROACH

    Get PDF
We investigate the behavior of optical bistability in a degenerate two-level atomic medium using an external magnetic field to separate the lower level into two distinct levels that both connect to an upper level by the probe and coupling laser fields. Based on analytical solutions, the absorption spectrum and behavior of optical bistability in an electromagnetically induced transparency regime under an external magnetic field are investigated. By controlling the external magnetic field, we find that the appearance and disappearance of the optical bistability can be easily controlled according to the strength of the magnetic field in the transparent window domain. Furthermore, the effects of the intensity of the coupling laser field and the parameters of the system on the behavior of optical bistability are also considered. The proposed model is useful for applications in all-optical switches and magneto-optic storage devices. We investigate the behavior of optical bistability in a degenerate two-level atomic medium using an external magnetic field to separate the lower level into two distinct levels that both connect to an upper level by the probe and coupling laser fields. The prevalence of microplastics (MPs) in the environment has had a significant impact on ecosystems and posed a major threat to human health. This study investigated the distribution and characteristics of MPs in the Nhue - Day River basin in Vietnam, which is a critical source of biodiversity and used to support the economic growth of about 12 million people. The effect of seasonal variation and anthropogenic activities on the MP abundance was assessed. The findings revealed that the MPs abundance was significant in this study area. The average abundance of MPs in the dry season (754 items/m3) was insignificantly higher than that in the rainy season (706 items/m3) with n=9. The range in the abundance of MPs in the dry and rainy seasons was 49-2,827 and 400-1,133 items/m3, respectively. Microplastics in fiber forms were dominant in both seasons. The majority of the collected MPs were in the 0.5-2.0 mm size range, varying from 71% to 100% of the total MPs depend on sampling point. The total percentage of MPs size 0.3-0.5 mm in the dry season was 56.97% compared to 119.85% in the rainy season, indicating that the MPs were broken into smaller pieces due to UV exposure and weather conditions. Colored items occupied the majority of the MPs. This study can be used to gain a better knowledge of MP pollution in Vietnam’s river water

A Phenomenological Study of Writing Error Correction: Perspectives of an English Language Learner in Two Different Contexts

    Get PDF
In second language writing, student errors in grammatical structure, word choice, or idea expression are a common phenomenon. How these errors should be treated poses a challenging question. In this qualitative study I attempt to explore the impacts of some current methods of error correction in second language writing through a phenomenological study of an English language learners who studied in Vietnam and the United States. The study participant was invited to reflect his learning experiences in an interview with the researcher. Theme-based analysis of the interview revealed that the manner in which teachers correct errors can have a considerable impact on student motivation to improve second language writing. The study participant indicated that over-correction of language errors inhibited his motivation to write in second language and that language teachers may consider providing an adequate amount of correction and feedback. Pedagogical recommendations are made to help teachers make appropriate corrections for their students’ writing papers. Food security, agricultural exports, and livelihoods have improved by rapid agricultural expansion in the previous 30 years. In the coming decades, warming trends and human pressures are expected to exacerbate the impact of climate change on agriculture. A time series of data from 1990 to 2020 examines the economic effects of climate change on Vietnamese farm production. After using the Augmented Dickey-Fuller and Philips-Perron unit root tests, the ARDL bounds testing technique estimates short and long-run cointegration. They found long-run cointegration between the variables. A positive influence of CO2 emissions is identified, although negative impacts of average temperature and rainfall are found. But only in the short term can energy consumption benefit agriculture. Non-climatic factors like crop production and fertiliser consumption have beneficial short- and long-term impacts on agriculture production and yield. Juselius Jhansen As well as proving long-term cointegration between variables. The report advises the Vietnamese government to create and implement many adaptation programmes to preserve the agriculture industry from climate change.Nguyen Van Huong (Faculty of Economics, Hung Yen University of Technology and Education (UTEHY)), Bui Thi Minh Nguyet (Vietnam National University of Forestry), Hoang Van Hung (Faculty of Economics, Hung Yen University of Technology and Education (UTEHY)), Hoang Minh Duc (Faculty of Economics, Hung Yen University of Technology and Education (UTEHY)), Nguyen Van Chuong (University of Financial and Business Administration (UFBA)), Do Minh Tri (Nguyen Van Linh Political School), Phung Van Hien (National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA))Includes bibliographical references

BACKGROUND: Spirulina platensis contains a large amount of chlorophylls, chlorophyll a, that are starting materials to synthesize functionalized chlorins. Chlorin e6 (Ce6) as well as its derivatives are second generation sensitizers using in photodynamic therapy (PDT) of various cancers. In this study, we transfer chlorophyll a of S. platensis to Ce6derivatives and determine their several applications. AIM: to evaluate the effects of Ce6 derivatives to treat cancer cells. METHODS: Ce6 trimethylester was created from methyl pheophorbide a2 in S. platensis provided by the Hidumi Company, Nghe An province, Viet Nam. Hela cells were incubated with Ce6 trimethylester and the irradiated with the diode laser dose of 1.2 J/cm2/min through the system of filters £ 650 nm. MTT assay and clonogenic assay were used to determine survival rate and cloning efficiency of cells. Antimicrobial effect of Ce6 trimethylester with halogen light were studied with Propionibacterium acnes VTCC 0218 and Staphylococcus aureus VTCC 0173. RESULTS: From dry biomass (700 g) of S. platensis, after extracting chlorophyll a and methanolysis, 4.2 g of methyl pheophorbide a was obtained. The reaction to give Ce6 trimethylester with 82% yield was performed with potassium hydroxide (KOH) in MeOH/THF/CHCl3. After irradiation with a 650 nm laser at 1.2 J, the cell viability in all samples decreased with Ce6 trimethylester treatment, the survival declining trend of Hela cells treated with Ce6 trimethylester were proportional when concentration of Ce6 trimethylester increased. The rate of colony formation was declined as the concentration of Ce6 trimethylester treated was increased. The growth of both S. aureus and P. acnes can be inactivated by Ce6 trimethylester PDT. The MIC99 value against P. acnes VTCC 0218 and S. aureus VTCC 0173 of Ce6 trimethylester with halogen light was 1.25 μg/ml. CONCLUSION: The Ce6 trimethylester from S. platensis cultivated in Viet Nam could be used as a potential photosentizer for photodynamic therapy for treatment of cancer and acne
