    Evaluation of WGS-subtyping methods for epidemiological surveillance of foodborne salmonellosis

    Background: Salmonellosis is one of the most common foodborne diseases worldwide. Although human infection by non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) enterica subspecies enterica is associated primarily with a self-limiting diarrhoeal illness, invasive bacterial infections (such as septicaemia, bacteraemia and meningitis) were also reported. Human outbreaks of NTS were reported in several countries all over the world including developing as well as high-income countries. Conventional laboratory methods such as pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) do not display adequate discrimination and have their limitations in epidemiological surveillance. It is therefore very crucial to use accurate, reliable and highly discriminative subtyping methods for epidemiological characterisation and outbreak investigation. Methods: Here, we used different whole genome sequence (WGS)-based subtyping methods for retrospective investigation of two different outbreaks of Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Dublin that occurred in 2013 in UK and Ireland respectively. Results: Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based cluster analysis of Salmonella Typhimurium genomes revealed well supported clades, that were concordant with epidemiologically defined outbreak and confirmed the source of outbreak is due to consumption of contaminated mayonnaise. SNP-analyses of Salmonella Dublin genomes confirmed the outbreak however the source of infection could not be determined. The core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) was discriminatory and separated the outbreak strains of Salmonella Dublin from the non-outbreak strains that were concordant with the epidemiological data however cgMLST could neither discriminate between the outbreak and non-outbreak strains of Salmonella Typhimurium nor confirm that contaminated mayonnaise is the source of infection, On the other hand, other WGS-based subtyping methods including multilocus sequence typing (MLST), ribosomal MLST (rMLST), whole genome MLST (wgMLST), clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPRs), prophage sequence profiling, antibiotic resistance profile and plasmid typing methods were less discriminatory and could not confirm the source of the outbreak. Conclusions: Foodborne salmonellosis is an important concern for public health therefore, it is crucial to use accurate, reliable and highly discriminative subtyping methods for epidemiological surveillance and outbreak investigation. In this study, we showed that SNP-based analyses do not only have the ability to confirm the occurrence of the outbreak but also to provide definitive evidence of the source of the outbreak in real-time

    First principles design of divacancy defected graphene nanoribbon based rectifying and negative differential resistance device

    We have elaborately studied the electronic structure of 555-777 divacancy (DV) defected armchair edged graphene nanoribbon (AGNR) and transport properties of AGNR based two-terminal device constructed with one defected electrode and one N doped electrode, by using density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green's function based approach. The introduction of 555-777 DV defect into AGNRs, results in a shifting of the {\pi} and {\pi}* bands towards the higher energy value which indicates a shifting of the Fermi level towards the lower energy. Formation of a potential barrier, very similar to that of conventional p-n junction, has been observed across the junction of defected and N doped AGNR. The prominent asymmetric feature of the current in the positive and negative bias indicates the diode like property of the device with high rectifying efficiency within wide range of bias voltages. The device also shows robust negative differential resistance (NDR) with very high peak-to-valley ratio. The analysis of the shifting of the energy states of the electrodes and the modification of the transmission function with applied bias provides an insight into the nonlinearity and asymmetry observed in the I-V characteristics.     Stepwise Analysis Of Gasification Reactions With Aspen Plus And CPFD

    The energy from biomass can be utilized through the thermochemical conversion processes of pyrolysis and gasification. Biomass such as wood chips is heated in a gasification reactor to produce a synthesis gas containing CO, H2 and CH4. The gas can be further processed to bioproducts or fuels. The thermochemical process involves devolatilization of wood followed by steam gasification, CO2 gasification, methanation, water gas shift reactions and methane reforming. To optimize the performance of the reactor, it is important to study each of the reactions separately. The reactions are simulated individually using the chemical process optimization software Aspen Plus. The results are compared with simulations performed with the Computational Particle Fluid Dynamic (CPFD) software Barracuda VR 15. The CPFD methodology solves the fluid and particle equations in three dimensions with the transient flow and is time-consuming. Aspen Plus is one dimensional and solves the included reactions fast. The results of the Aspen Plus and CPFD simulations, given as product gas compositions (CO, CO2, CH4 and H2), show that each reaction contributes to the product gas composition differently. Comparison between Aspen Plus and CPFD simulations of individual gasification reactions show good agreement. However, when all reactions are included in the simulations, there is a deviation in the volume fraction of product gas composition

    SR-POEM, our principle of equivalence measurement on a sounding rocket, will compare the free fall rate of two substances yielding an uncertainty of E-16 in the estimate of \eta. During the past two years, the design concept has matured and we have been working on the required technology, including a laser gauge that is self aligning and able to reach 0.1 pm per root hertz for periods up to 40 s.     Projecting Nepal's Demographic Future- How to deal with spatial and demographic heterogeneity

    This Working Paper outlines the efforts of the cooperation between researchers at IIASA’s World Population Program and the Ministry of Health and Population, Nepal to conduct small-area population projections on Village Development Committee and Municipality levels for Nepal from 2011 to 2031. In order to fulfil this aim it was necessary to compile, harmonize and estimate small-area population data based on the latest census and survey data. Due to the lack of comprehensive fine-grained data on the demographic determinants fertility, mortality, and migration we estimate those with different methodological approaches like the Child-Women-Ratio or mortality corrections. In recent time, internal and international migration has become the most common of the three demographic components; therefore, most efforts went into estimating the rates of migration flows to and from several directions. The creation of this small-area fertility, mortality and migration data by age and sex enables us to apply the well-known cohort component method in a multi-state framework (each district as a state) and to create reasonable scenarios on the prospective population development for Nepal on regional and local level. This will help national, regional and local actors and policymakers to set appropriate measures to steer and adapt to the future characteristics of the Nepalese society on all administrative levels

    A systematic review of behavioral outcomes for leadership interventions among health professionals

    Background: Healthcare requires effective leadership to improve patient outcomes, manage change, and achieve organizational goals. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate interventions aimed at improving leadership behavior in health professionals. Methods: A systematic literature review of key databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Scopus) was performed in September 2018. Data were extracted and synthesized. Results: Thirty-three articles from 31 studies met the inclusion criteria. Self-reported leadership behavior showed a significant postprogram improvement. Objective observations were more likely to show improved leadership behavior than subjective observations. Face-to-face delivery of leadership development was more effective than online delivery. Interventions incorporating the elements of personal development planning, self-directed learning, workplace-based learning, and reflection were more likely to develop leadership behavior. Conclusions/implications for practice: Leadership interventions had a beneficial effect on the leadership behaviors of participants based on both subjective and objective changes in behavior. In addition to focusing on individual skill development, interventions that aim to develop leadership should consider the organizational, social, cultural, and political contexts in which behavioral change is expected. Workplace-based learning should be included in program development
