Cash holding, state ownership and firm value: The case of Vietnam

    Get PDF
Using a sample of 650 listed firms on the Vietnamese stock exchange over the period 2008-2015, we examine the effect of cash holding level on firm value. The results find out the cash holding has an impact on firm value in an inverted U-shaped form. Furthermore, this study investigates whether the state ownership influences firm value. We point out that there is a statistically insignificant positive relationship between state ownership and firm value unless the state ownership’s advantages are utilized. The findings have implications of cash management in state-owned firms. © 2016, Econjournals. All rights reserved

Does foreign ownership impact accounting conservatism adoption in Vietnam?

    Get PDF
This study investigates the effects of foreign ownership on accounting conservatism adoption in Vietnam. Although foreign ownership is found to have a positive relationship with accounting conservatism in Korea (An, 2015), there is still no general agreement on it. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to shed more light on the association between foreign ownership and accounting conservatism. Using data from Vietnamese firms listed on stock exchanges, the study finds that in contrast to the findings of An, foreign ownership is negatively associated with accounting conservatism. This result supports the transient hypothesis of foreign ownership, indicating that foreign investors with the low level of ownership do not have significant incentives to oversee managers, thus not influencing financial reporting quality. © 2017 Prague Development Center.Internal Grant Agency of FaME; TBU - The Relationship between Concentration Ownership and Financial Reporting Quality [IGA/FaME/2017/004

Costing analysis of national HIV treatment and care program in Vietnam

    Get PDF
The study found that HIV treatment and care costs in Vietnam are economical, yet there is potential to further promote efficiency through strengthening competitive procurement, integrating HIV services, and promoting earlier antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation. Non-antiretroviral (ARV) costs in adults at stand-alone facilities were 44% (first year ART) and 24% (later year ART) higher than those at integrated facilities. As well, early treatment before patients’ progress to advanced immunodeficiency will prevent an increase in new HIV infections, while decreasing need for ART in the future. This study provides a first-ever evidence base for nationwide HIV treatment and care costs in Vietnam

Safe haven for Asian equity markets during financial distress: Bitcoin versus Gold

    Get PDF
This study aims to analyse the role of bitcoin and gold as safe haven assets for Asian equity markets during periods of high market uncertainty related to the global COVID-19 pandemic, high volatility and extreme stock market conditions. Our empirical analysis employs the DCC-GARCH methodology to estimate the time-varying relationship between bitcoin/gold and the Asian stock market from 2016 to 2023. Our findings reveal that bitcoin serves as a strong hedge for Taiwan and Pakistan, whereas gold can be considered a strong hedge for Japan, Singapore, India, Thailand and Vietnam. Interestingly, we observe that bitcoin does not exhibit safe haven properties in any of the Asian countries observed. In contrast, gold demonstrates strong safe haven abilities for Singapore, India and Thailand. These results remain consistent across various measures of market turmoil, including the volatility index, COVID-19-related periods and low quantiles on the stock market. Furthermore, our results suggest that the perception and adoption of gold as a safe haven asset in Japan and Vietnam is mainly influenced by global events and uncertainties, rather than localized stock market conditions. These findings offer valuable information for investors, financial institutions as well as policy makers and regulators as to how cryptocurrency and gold have evolved as hedge and safe haven assets in Asia during uncertainty periods.Ton Duc Thang UniversityTon Duc Thang University [FOSTECT.2023.18

The geophysical investigation system named TEC-2 (Tomography Electric Complex-2) was designed, installed and tested in Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics. This TEC-2 is the scientific cooperation product of Geomagnetic and Geoelectric Department of and POI and Geo - environmental Department of IMGG-VAST. The test results using TEC-2 show the capability of investigating by using certain pole system, short investigation time, high stability, the accuracy of two investigation times being more than 92%. The distributed design of electric poles, measuring operation, parameter selection, … are programmed and controlled automatically by computer. The TEC-2 system was used for investigating the weak structures in islands of Song Tu Tay, Son Ca, Nam Yet and Sinh Ton in Truong Sa Archipelagos and shallow geological environment in the area of Red River bank in Son Tay Hanoi. The acquired data  contributed to the success of the scientific projects managed by IMGG in the National Program of Bien Dong and islands in the period of 2011 - 2013 and VAST’s research project in the period of 2013 - 2014.Máy đo điện tổ hợp TEC-2 (Tomography Electric Complex-2)  được thiết kế, lắp ráp và thử nghiệm tại Viện Địa chất và Địa vật lý biển là sản phẩm hợp tác khoa học giữa phòng Địa từ điện của Viện Hàn lâm Khoa học Nga chi nhánh Viễn Đông (POI) và phòng Địa môi trường thuộc Viện Địa chất và Địa vật lý biển (IMGG).
