    Redox properties and reactivity of a polythiophene-modified electrode in presence of ferrocene in solution or fixed onto the polymer network

    A polymer-modified electrode (PME) was tested for the examination of the electrode reactivity in presence of an electroactive specie. Ferrocene (Fc) was chosen as redox probe and cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used to investigate the redox activity of the polymer. The polythiophene matrix used can be easily post-functionalized, allowing to investigate the redox behaviour of a surface-tethered ferrocene conducting polymer compare to the redox properties of the film when the ferrocene is free in solution. Results reported show dramatic changes in voltammetric patterns obtained at \u27organic electrode\u27 compared to Pt electrode. When Fc was in solution, the current peak ascribed to Fc oxidation at PME increases promptly as the conductivity of the film switch \u27ON\u27. When Fc units were grafted onto the polymer network, the quartz crystal microbalance shows that the Fc oxidation was assisted by the conducting polymer chain

    Efficient and Extensible Policy Mining for Relationship-Based Access Control

    Relationship-based access control (ReBAC) is a flexible and expressive framework that allows policies to be expressed in terms of chains of relationship between entities as well as attributes of entities. ReBAC policy mining algorithms have a potential to significantly reduce the cost of migration from legacy access control systems to ReBAC, by partially automating the development of a ReBAC policy. Existing ReBAC policy mining algorithms support a policy language with a limited set of operators; this limits their applicability. This paper presents a ReBAC policy mining algorithm designed to be both (1) easily extensible (to support additional policy language features) and (2) scalable. The algorithm is based on Bui et al.'s evolutionary algorithm for ReBAC policy mining algorithm. First, we simplify their algorithm, in order to make it easier to extend and provide a methodology that extends it to handle new policy language features. However, extending the policy language increases the search space of candidate policies explored by the evolutionary algorithm, thus causes longer running time and/or worse results. To address the problem, we enhance the algorithm with a feature selection phase. The enhancement utilizes a neural network to identify useful features. We use the result of feature selection to reduce the evolutionary algorithm's search space. The new algorithm is easy to extend and, as shown by our experiments, is more efficient and produces better policies

    Prediction of outcome of non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with chemotherapy and bortezomib by time-course MALDI-TOF-MS serum peptide profiling

    Background: Only a minority of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) benefit from chemotherapy. Serum peptide profiling of NSCLC patients was performed to investigate patterns associated with treatment outcome. Using magnetic bead-assisted serum peptide capture coupled to matrix-assisted laser desorption/ ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), serum peptide mass profiles of 27 NSCLC patients treated with cisplatin-gemcitabine chemotherapy and bortezomib were obtained. Support vector machine-based algorithms to predict clinical outcome were established based on differential pre-treatment peptide profiles and dynamic changes in peptide abundance during treatment. Results: A 6-peptide ion signature distinguished with 82% accuracy, sensitivity and specificity patients with a relatively short vs. long progression-free survival (PFS) upon treatment. Prediction of long PFS was associated with longer overall survival. Inclusion of 7 peptide ions showing differential changes in abundance during treatment led to a 13-peptide ion signature with 86% accuracy at 100% sensitivity and 73% specificity. A 5-peptide ion signature could separate patients with a partial response vs. non-responders with 89% accuracy at 100% sensitivity and 83% specificity. Differential peptide profiles were also found when comparing the NSCLC serum profiles to those from cancer-free control subjects. Conclusion: This study shows that serum peptidome profiling using MALDI-TOF-MS coupled to pattern diagnostics may aid in prediction of treatment outcome of advanced NSCLC patients treated with chemotherap

    Vermicomposting technique in South Vietnam. Earthworms play a major role in organic matter transformation. The vermicomposting allows to combine several advantages: the management of diversified organic wastes, and the production of earthworms and vermicompost. Crop residues and other plant wastes mixed with animal manure from individual farms can be used. In South Vietnam, farmers are rearing some livestock and growing a few number of crop species. From several years, an increasing number of vermicomposting units were set in many farms from the Ho Chi Minh City region. Two kinds of infrastructure materials are used: baked clay blocks or bamboo stems with plastic covers. In South Vietnam, all conditions are pooled to ensure an efficient earthworm production: suitable climate, available organic wastes and materials to build the vermicomposting structures. Both field plot fertility and protein feed for livestock (pigs, poultry, etc.) can be provided by rearing earthworms

    A TQFT associated to the LMO invariant of three-dimensional manifolds

    We construct a Topological Quantum Field Theory (in the sense of Atiyah) associated to the universal finite-type invariant of 3-dimensional manifolds, as a functor from the category of 3-dimensional manifolds with parametrized boundary, satisfying some additional conditions, to an algebraic-combinatorial category. It is built together with its truncations with respect to a natural grading, and we prove that these TQFTs are non-degenerate and anomaly-free. The TQFT(s) induce(s) a (series of) representation(s) of a subgroup Lg{\cal L}_g of the Mapping Class Group that contains the Torelli group. The N=1 truncation produces a TQFT for the Casson-Walker-Lescop invariant.Comment: 28 pages, 13 postscript figures.
