    ECLIPS: An extended CLIPS for backward chaining and goal-directed reasoning

    Realistic production systems require an integrated combination of forward and backward reasoning to reflect appropriately the processes of natural human expert reasoning. A control mechanism that consists solely of forward reasoning is not an effective way to promptly focus the system's attention as calculation proceeds. Often, expert system programmers will attempt to compensate for this lack by using data to enforce the desired goal directed control structure. This approach is inherently flawed in that it is attempting to use data to fulfill the role of control. This paper will describe our implementation of backward chaining in C Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS), and show how this has shortened and simplified various CLIPS programs.     Fuzzy expert systems using CLIPS

    This paper describes a CLIPS-based fuzzy expert system development environment called FCLIPS and illustrates its application to the simulated cart-pole balancing problem. FCLIPS is a straightforward extension of CLIPS without any alteration to the CLIPS internal structures. It makes use of the object-oriented and module features in CLIPS version 6.0 for the implementation of fuzzy logic concepts. Systems of varying degrees of mixed Boolean and fuzzy rules can be implemented in CLIPS. Design and implementation issues of FCLIPS will also be discussed

    Connectivity & Communication: A Study of How Small Wine Businesses Use the Internet

    This paper addresses the development and effects of Internet use by small wine businesses.Ā  Ā It includes useful insights that can be applied to other small businesses, and also provides helpful information for consultants and entrepreneurship educators. An exploratory framework is presented that includes a four-stage sequence through which small businesses typically progress in relation to the use of Internet-related tools. The stages include awareness, design, implementation, and practice. Propositions are also developed to guide analysis of the framework, and anĀ  empirical test of various parts of the framework is performed using a sample of 382 wineries. Results showed that, beyond the use of e-mail for communication and connectivity, awareness of the Internet's uses is moderate, while implementation is moderate to low. Thirty-nine percent of the respondents believe the Internet will make a strong contribution to sales and profitability in the future, though only 9% report they are currently achieving this with Internet utilization

    Edge of Infinity: The Clash between Edge Effect and Infinity Assumption for the Distribution of Charge on a Conducting Plate

    We re-examine a familiar problem given in introductory physics courses, about determining the induced charge distribution on an uncharged ``infinitely-large'' conducting plate when placing parallel to it a uniform charged dielectric plate of the same size. We show that, no matter how large the plates are, the edge effect will always be strong enough to influence the charge distribution deep in the central region, which totally destroyed the infinity assumption (that the surface charge densities on the two sides are uniform and of opposite magnitudes). For a more detailed analysis, we solve Poisson's equation for a similar setting in two-dimensional space and obtain the exact charge distribution, helping us to understand what happens how charge distributes at the central, the asymptotic, and the edge regions

    Resequencing microarray probe design for typing genetically diverse viruses: human rhinoviruses and enteroviruses

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Febrile respiratory illness (FRI) has a high impact on public health and global economics and poses a difficult challenge for differential diagnosis. A particular issue is the detection of genetically diverse pathogens, i.e. human rhinoviruses (HRV) and enteroviruses (HEV) which are frequent causes of FRI. Resequencing Pathogen Microarray technology has demonstrated potential for differential diagnosis of several respiratory pathogens simultaneously, but a high confidence design method to select probes for genetically diverse viruses is lacking.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using HRV and HEV as test cases, we assess a general design strategy for detecting and serotyping genetically diverse viruses. A minimal number of probe sequences (26 for HRV and 13 for HEV), which were potentially capable of detecting all serotypes of HRV and HEV, were determined and implemented on the Resequencing Pathogen Microarray RPM-Flu v.30/31 (<it>Tessarae RPM-Flu</it>). The specificities of designed probes were validated using 34 HRV and 28 HEV strains. All strains were successfully detected and identified at least to species level. 33 HRV strains and 16 HEV strains could be further differentiated to serotype level.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study provides a fundamental evaluation of simultaneous detection and differential identification of genetically diverse RNA viruses with a minimal number of prototype sequences. The results demonstrated that the newly designed RPM-Flu v.30/31 can provide comprehensive and specific analysis of HRV and HEV samples which implicates that this design strategy will be applicable for other genetically diverse viruses.</p
