    Mandibulectomia parcial em cão com melanoma: Relato de caso

    Os tumores melanocíticos se originam dos melanócitos e melanoblastos, sendo que a conversão dos melanócitos normais em neoplásicos é constituída de múltiplas etapas. Melanomas são neoplasias cutâneas primárias encontradas em regiões que possuem acúmulo de melanóticos. O melanoma é formado por uma mácula escura que se transforma em uma massa firme, de crescimento rápido com infiltração local e metástase precoce. O tamanho e o grau de pigmentação não são parâmetros indicadores de malignidade tumoral. As neoplasias da cavidade oral em cães e gatos são frequentes e representam o quarto local mais acometido por tumores, sendo o melanoma o mais frequente. O diagnóstico baseia-se no histopatológico e a excisão cirúrgica continua sendo método de tratamento mais indicado. A mandibulectomia total ou parcial aumenta a sobrevida do animal em até 10 meses, sem associação de qualquer terapia adjuvante. Se não houver a retirada com margem do tumor, a sobrevida é de 3 a 4 meses. Objetivou-se relatar um caso clínico de uma cadela, da raça poodle com 14 anos de idade, que apresentou um nódulo em região rostral da mandíbula, com crescimento rápido, na qual foi diagnosticada com melanoma e optou-se pela mandibulectomia parcial, notado melhor qualidade de vida ao paciente sem apresentar uma condição estética desagradável ao proprietário

    Abstract Introduction: Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) affects mainly elderly, being characterized by arthralgia, stiffness and strength and balance deficits. Scientific evidence suggests beneficial effects of exercise therapy on these changes, but lacks detailed protocols. In addition, there were published studies on effects of therapeutic exercise associated with pompage that were not located. Objective: To investigate the effects of a therapeutic exercise program associated with pompage on pain, balance and muscle strength in elderly women with knee osteoarthritis. Methods: A randomized pilot clinical trial that included 22 women (60 - 80 years) diagnosed with knee OA, randomized and allocated by simple raffle into two groups: intervention and control. Intervention group (strengthening and balance exercises and knee pompage) performed two sessions per week for 12 weeks. The control group received educational lectures, they were evaluated before and after 12 weeks: arthralgia- subscale pain of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index questionnaire (WOMAC); postural stability- postural balance protocol by Biodex Balance SD and muscle strength- concentric peak torque of the knee extensor by isokinetic dynamometer. The Independent Student t test was used for intergroup analysis. Results: The intervention group compared with the control showed better results for the outcomes pain, balance and muscle strength after 12 weeks. However, the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05) for levels of antero-posterior oscillation (DM -0.28, 95% CI -0.54 a -0.02; p = 0.035) and global oscillation (DM -0.36, 95% CI -0.68 a -0.04; p = 0.028). Conclusion: The intervention had a positive effect on postural balance in elderly women with knee osteoarthritis

    TREM1 rs2234237 (Thr25Ser) Polymorphism in Patients with Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Caused by Leishmania guyanensis: A Case-Control Study in the State of Amazonas, Brazil

    Background: Leishmaniasis is an infectious disease caused by Leishmania parasites. A Th1 immune response is necessary in the acute phase to control the pathogen. The triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells (TREM)-1 is a potent amplifier of inflammation. Our aim is to identify whether the TREM1 variant rs2234237 A/T (Thr25Ser) is associated with the disease development of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Leishmania guyanensis-infected individuals. The effects of the rs2234237 genotypes on plasma cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, MCP-1 and TNF-α are also investigated. Methods: 838 patients with CL and 818 healthy controls (HCs) living in the same endemic areas were genotyped by Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism. Plasma cytokines were assayed in 400 patients with CL and 400 HCs using the BioPlex assay. Results: The genotypes’ and alleles’ frequencies were similar in both patients with CL (AA = 618, 74%; AT = 202, 24%; TT = 18, 2%) and in HCs (AA = 580, 71%; AT = 220, 27%; TT = 18, 2%). Rs2234237 showed a modest effect on plasma IL-10 that disappeared when correction of the p-value was applied. Plasma IL-10 by rs2234237 genotypes were (mean ± SEM; AA = 2.91 pg/mL ± 0.14; AT = 2.35 pg/mL ± 0.12; TT = 3.14 pg/mL ± 0.56; p = 0.05). Conclusion: The TREM1 rs2234237 (Thr25Ser) seems to have no influence on the susceptibility or resistance to L. guyanensis infections
