Hybrids between Schistosoma mansoni and S. rodhaini : characterization by isoelectric focusing of six enzymes

    Get PDF

Magnetic screening in proximity effect Josephson-junction arrays

    Get PDF
The modulation with magnetic field of the sheet inductance measured on proximity effect Josephson-junction arrays (JJAs) is progressively vanishing on lowering the temperature, leading to a low temperature field-independent response. This behaviour is consistent with the decrease of the two-dimensional penetration length below the lattice parameter. Low temperature data are quantitatively compared with theoretical predictions based on the XY model in absence of thermal fluctuations. The results show that the description of a JJA within the XY model is incomplete and the system is put well beyond the weak screening limit which is usually assumed in order to invoke the well known frustrated XY model describing classical Josephson-junction arrays.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Acoustic response of an injection system to high-frequency transverse acoustic fields

International audienceThe acoustic coupling between the injection system and the acoustic fluctuations in liquid rocket engine combustion chambers is an important issue in the understanding of the thermo-acoustic instability phenomenon. This paper presents the results of a wide-ranging parametric investigation of the acoustic response of a two-phase injection system submitted to a forced high-amplitude transverse acoustic field. Two domes, one for the gas and one for the liquid, were expressly designed to feed three identical coaxial injectors. The internal mode shapes of the domes were characterized by measuring pressure signals at different locations in the domes. Experimental mode shapes showed good agreement with those predicted by numerical simulations. Acoustic pressure amplitudes up to 23% of those induced in the main cavity can be found in both the gas and liquid domes. The response efficiency in a dome depends on the position of the injectors' exit in the acoustic field

Abnormal diffusion of a single vortex in the two dimensional XY model

We study thermal diffusion dynamics of a single vortex in two dimensional XY model. By numerical simulations we find an abnormal diffusion such that the mobility decreases with time tt as 1/lnt1/\ln t. In addition we construct a one dimensional diffusion-like equation to model the dynamics and confirm that it conserves quantitative property of the abnormal diffusion. By analyzing the reduced model, we find that the radius of the collectively moving region with the vortex core grows as R(t)t1/2R(t) \propto t^{1/2}. This suggests that the mobility of the vortex is described by dynamical correlation length as 1/lnR(t)1/\ln R(t).Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure

Complications of Carotid Angioplasty and Stenting

The authors report the complications that occurred in their experience with performing recanalization procedures in the internal carotid artery and present their treatment strategies. The complications can be classified into those that were periprocedural and those that were postprocedural. The former include complications related to the vascular-approach access site of and those associated with the dilation and stenting procedure. Other complications observed included embolic events, dissection, vascular spasm, bradycardia, inappropriate dilation, occlusion of the external carotid artery, and rare, unusual complications such as the occurrence of iatrogenic cavernous carotid fistula. Postprocedure complications occurred in the hours and days following the procedure in the form of embolic and occlusive events, and hypotension and bradycardia were seen as late complications in the months following the procedure. The authors discuss how such complications occur and provide suggestions on how to avoid them. The role of stent placement and the potential use of protective devices are explored. Overall, adequate use of currently available systems allows for safe application of endovascular treatment techniques that avoid altogether or treat these potential complications. A reduced incidence of complications related to the initial individual learning curve may be obtained with preclinical training, in which use of invitro models should be considered. Surgical standby no longer seems required; however, early posttreatment surveillance in intensive care unit is mandatory to avoid the remaining primary complications

Magnetic-field dependence of dynamical vortex response in two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays and superconducting films

The dynamical vortex response of a two-dimensional array of the resistively shunted Josephson junctions in a perpendicular magnetic field is inferred from simulations. It is found that, as the magnetic field is increased at a fixed temperature, the response crosses over from normal to anomalous, and that this crossover can be characterized by a single dimensionless parameter. It is described how this crossover should be reflected in measurements of the complex impedance for Josephson junction arrays and superconducting films.Comment: 4 pages including 5 figures in two columns, final versio

Interactions between Natural Populations of Human and Rodent Schistosomes in the Lake Victoria Region of Kenya: A Molecular Epidemiological Approach

    Get PDF
One of the world's most prevalent neglected diseases is schistosomiasis, which infects approximately 200 million people worldwide. Schistosoma mansoni is transmitted to humans by skin penetration by free-living larvae that develop in freshwater snails. The origin of this species is East Africa, where it coexists with its sister species, S. rodhaini. Interactions between these species potentially influence their epidemiology, ecology, and evolutionary biology, because they infect the same species of hosts and can hybridize. Over two years, we examined their distribution in Kenya to determine their degree of overlap geographically, within snail hosts, and in the water column as infective stages. Both species were spatially and temporally patchy, although S. mansoni was eight times more common than S. rodhaini. Both species overlap in the time of day they were present in the water column, which increases the potential for the species to coinfect the same host and interbreed. Peak infective time for S. mansoni was midday and dawn and dusk for S. rodhaini. Three snails were coinfected, which was more common than expected by chance. These findings indicate a lack of obvious isolating mechanisms to prevent hybridization, raising the intriguing question of how the two species retain separate identities
