UNDER THE CELLULOID SKIN: A Social Semiotic Analysis of Tunç Okan’s Debut Film Otobüs

Cinema is an externalised, materialised form of collective memory in which one can find experiences, desires, traumas, ideas, hopes and imaginations of the given society. One can - with the utilisation of the right set of tools and methods - learn a lot about a society by studying its cinema. In this context, this thesis offers a social semiotic analysis of the debut film Otobüs (The Bus, 1974) by the Turkish film director Tunç Okan. The film, which follows the dystopian journey of nine Turkish workers from Turkey to Sweden who are cheated by an international human trafficking gang, offers a very rich set of symbols that constructs an alternative socio-historical record from the point of view of other ignored other, namely the immigrants of whom Okan himself is one. This thesis -by utilising the Marxist social semiotic approaches of Robert Hodge and Gunther Kress- attempts to make the cinematographic signifiers visible and connect these signifiers to the socio-historical signifieds. In relation to the analysis of the film the thesis also introduces a new concept transboundary cinema in order to avoid shortcomings in the existing terminology dealing with the multi-transitional structure of the film and to be able to recognise the films unique qualities

Türkiye sinemasında eşcinsel cinsel ve/veya duygusal yönelime sahip birey ya da bireylerin temsili

Bir cinsel ve/veya duygusal yönelim türü olarak eşcinsellik tarih boyunca çeşitli sanat formları tarafından farklı şekillerde değinilmiş bir konudur. Bir sanat formu olarak sinema da eşcinsel cinsel ve/veya duygusal yönelimi ve bu tür yönelime sahip bireyleri çeşitli şekillerde temsil etmiştir. Dünya sinemasında ve Türkiye sinemasında eşcinsel yönelimler ya da bu tür yönelimi olan bireyler genellikle olumsuz olarak temsil edilmiştir. Türkiye sinemasında 1960’lı yıllara kadar eşcinsel cinsel ve/veya duygusal yönelime ve bu tür yönelimi olan bireylere değinen filmlere rastlanmaz. Bu durumun en önemli sebeplerinde biri sansür politikalarıdır. Türkiye sinemasında eşcinselliğe ve eşcinsellere yönelik temsil çok büyük oranda olumsuzdur. Eşcinsel karakterlerin neredeyse tamamına yakını derinlikten yoksun, sığ, kadınsı, zayıf, hastalıklı, vb. olumsuz özellikleri olan tiplerdir. Türkiye sinemasının eşcinselliğe ve eşcinsellere yönelik tutumu 1990’lı yıllarda olumlu yönde değişmeye başlamıştır. Bunda Türkiye’deki cinsel azınlıkların örgütlü hale gelmesi, sansür uygulamalarının ortadan kalkması ya da azalması, bu tür cinsel yönelime sahip ya da bu konuda yeterli bilgisi olan yönetmenlerin eşcinselliğe ve eşcinsellere değinen filmler yapmaya başlamış olması önemlidir. Summary Homosexual sexual or/and emotional orientations and people who have this kind of orientations were touched on several times in different forms of arts during the history. Cinema ,a new form of arts, also used homosexual sexual or/and emotional orientations and homosexual oriented people as a subject, and represented in different ways. The representation of homosexual sexual or/and emotional orientations and homosexual oriented people are generally negative, both in world cinema and cinema of Turkey. There had never been any movie which touched on homosexuality and homosexuals in cinema of Turkey until 1960’s because of censorship. Approach of cinema of Turkey to homosexuality and homosexuals is usually negative. Homosexual characters in cinema of Turkey are generally represented as a weak, without psychological background, deepness. The way of representation of homosexuality and homosexuals in cinema of Turkey has started to change in 1990’s. A low-power switched-current algorithmic A/D converter

This paper reports the development of a low-power switched-current algorithmic A/D converter based on a new algorithm, providing the bit conversion in three-cycles. The converter uses modified (SI)-I-2 type current copiers to reduce the overall area and power consumption. The analog portion of the converter occupies only 0.35mm(2) area in 3 mu m CMOS technology. The simulation results show that the converter provides 10 bits resolution with a conversion rate of 61kHz, while dissipating only 1mW power from a single 5V supply
