Tunable nonlinearity in atomic response to a bichromatic field
Atomic response to a probe beam can be tailored, by creating coherences
between atomic levels with help of another beam. Changing parameters of the
control beam will change the nature of coherences and hence the nature of
atomic response as well. Such change can depend upon intensity of both probe
and control beams, in a nonlinear fashion. We present a situation where this
nonlinearity in dependence can be precisely controlled, as to obtain different
variations as desired. We also present a detailed analysis of how this
nonlinear dependency arises and show that this is an interesting effect of
several Coherent Population Trap(CPT) states that exist and a competition among
them to trap atomic population in them.Comment: 16 pages and 6 figure
Roles of Government and Community Support, Flood Experience, and Flood Education in Livelihood Resilience
Flooding is a perennial problem in the state of Bihar, India with devastating impact on the livelihood of people. In spite of the government\u27s measures of flood mitigation, households continue to live with suffering on account of severe damage to their material and non-material assets. In this background, the objectives of the study are: (1) to explore the differential role of the community and government support in livelihood resilience; (2) to assess the impact of flood experience and flood education in livelihood resilience; and (3) to explore the impact of level of education, reflected in average years of schooling of the male-headed households in livelihood resilience. The primary data were collected from 472 households by using a multi-stage random sampling technique over seven blocks in river basins of Ganga and Kosi in the district of Bhagalpur, Bihar. To analyze the data, descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling were used. The findings of the study show that prompt and spontaneous community action was more effective than government help. Flood experience also plays a crucial role in the revamping of livelihood. Flood education is not found to exist in the area; people learn the skills of survival during and after floods from their elders. Moreover, difference in education among the male-headed households creates difference in the attitudes and awareness surrounding livelihood resilience
Sharp signature of DDW quantum critical point in the Hall coefficient of the cuprates
We study the behavior of the Hall coefficient, , in a system exhibiting
density-wave (DDW) order in a regime in which the carrier
concentration, , is tuned to approach a quantum critical point at which the
order is destroyed. At the mean-field level, we find that
evinces a sharp signature of the transition. There is a kink in
at the critical value of the carrier concentration, ; as the critical
point is approached from the ordered side, the slope of
diverges. Hall transport experiments in the cuprates, at high magnetic fields
sufficient to destroy superconductivity, should reveal this effect.Comment: 5 pages, 2 eps figure
StyleRig: Rigging StyleGAN for 3D Control over Portrait Images
StyleGAN generates photorealistic portrait images of faces with eyes, teeth, hair and context (neck, shoulders, background), but lacks a rig-like control over semantic face parameters that are interpretable in 3D, such as face pose, expressions, and scene illumination. Three-dimensional morphable face models (3DMMs) on the other hand offer control over the semantic parameters, but lack photorealism when rendered and only model the face interior, not other parts of a portrait image (hair, mouth interior, background). We present the first method to provide a face rig-like control over a pretrained and fixed StyleGAN via a 3DMM. A new rigging network, RigNet is trained between the 3DMM's semantic parameters and StyleGAN's input. The network is trained in a self-supervised manner, without the need for manual annotations. At test time, our method generates portrait images with the photorealism of StyleGAN and provides explicit control over the 3D semantic parameters of the face
Renormalized Harmonic-Oscillator Description of Confined Electron Systems with Inverse-Square Interaction
An integrable model for SU() electrons with inverse-square interaction
is studied for the system with confining harmonic potential. We develop a new
description of the spectrum based on the {\it renormalized
harmonic-oscillators} which incorporate interaction effects via the repulsion
of energy levels. This approach enables a systematic treatment of the

Rashbons: Properties and their significance
In presence of a synthetic non-Abelian gauge field that induces a Rashba like
spin-orbit interaction, a collection of weakly interacting fermions undergoes a
crossover from a BCS ground state to a BEC ground state when the strength of
the gauge field is increased [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 84}, 014512 (2011)]. The BEC
that is obtained at large gauge coupling strengths is a condensate of tightly
bound bosonic fermion-pairs whose properties are solely determined by the
Rashba gauge field -- hence called rashbons. In this paper, we conduct a
systematic study of the properties of rashbons and their dispersion. This study
reveals a new qualitative aspect of the problem of interacting fermions in
non-Abelian gauge fields, i.e., that the rashbon state induced by the gauge
field for small centre of mass momenta of the fermions ceases to exist when
this momentum exceeds a critical value which is of the order of the gauge
coupling strength. The study allows us to estimate the transition temperature
of the rashbon BEC, and suggests a route to enhance the exponentially small
transition temperature of the system with a fixed weak attraction to the order
of the Fermi temperature by tuning the strength of the non-Abelian gauge field.
The nature of the rashbon dispersion, and in particular the absence of the
rashbon states at large momenta, suggests a regime of parameter space where the
normal state of the system will be a dynamical mixture of uncondensed rashbons
and unpaired helical fermions. Such a state should show many novel features

Advanced stage of breast cancer hoist alkaline phosphatase activity: risk factor for females in India
Breast cancer is the most common neoplasm affecting women in the western world with an average frequency of 1 in 11, developing the malignancy and it is second most common cancer in India. Variations in serum levels of biochemical parameters especially alkaline phosphatase (ALP) changes may be of great help in diagnosis of breast carcinoma. Serum ALP activity was assayed in 388 histopathologically proven breast cancer patients using spectrophotometric methods and monitored association with cancer stages. Breast cancer is a female-biased disease and our study was conducted in a group of female patients with mean age of 48.67 ± 8.32 years. A significant increase in levels of ALP (809.65 ± 145.97 IU/L) was observed in stage IV of the disease. The logistic regression study gave a significant result (P < 0.001) when we compared the group of ALP level (>500 IU/L) with metastatic presentation. The present study besides being cost effective suggested the usefulness of ALP in differentiating breast cancer stages and metastasis
{PIE}: {P}ortrait Image Embedding for Semantic Control
Editing of portrait images is a very popular and important research topic with a large variety of applications. For ease of use, control should be provided via a semantically meaningful parameterization that is akin to computer animation controls. The vast majority of existing techniques do not provide such intuitive and fine-grained control, or only enable coarse editing of a single isolated control parameter. Very recently, high-quality semantically controlled editing has been demonstrated, however only on synthetically created StyleGAN images. We present the first approach for embedding real portrait images in the latent space of StyleGAN, which allows for intuitive editing of the head pose, facial expression, and scene illumination in the image. Semantic editing in parameter space is achieved based on StyleRig, a pretrained neural network that maps the control space of a 3D morphable face model to the latent space of the GAN. We design a novel hierarchical non-linear optimization problem to obtain the embedding. An identity preservation energy term allows spatially coherent edits while maintaining facial integrity. Our approach runs at interactive frame rates and thus allows the user to explore the space of possible edits. We evaluate our approach on a wide set of portrait photos, compare it to the current state of the art, and validate the effectiveness of its components in an ablation study
