Scalar and Tensor Couplings in Kaon Decays
In the past few years charged kaon experiments have indicated possible scalar and tensor couplings in semileptonic kaon decays(K --> pi e nu). These couplings, if correct, are not predicted by the Standard Model and may indicate the onset of new physics. We present a summary of the existing data and a new, precision measurement of these couplings in the neutral kaon system based on a 3% subset of the data taken by the KTeV (E799) experiment at Fermilab
The Decline of Upland Birds in Nebraska: Maximizing Limited Habitat
Ring-necked Pheasants were introduced into the United States around 150 years ago and since then have become an important species both culturally and economically. There population health is of growing concern as upland bird populations in much of the United States have been declining rapidly throughout the latter half of the last century. In Nebraska millions of acres have been transformed from habitat that benefits upland birds into row crop agriculture, mostly in the form of corn and soybeans. Rural Mail Carrier Surveys conducted for pheasants from 1960 through 2020 in comparison to change in acres harvested depict the relationship and correlation between the two variables. With less available habitat for upland birds, it is important for wildlife habitat managers, and landowners especially those enrolled in CRP to create the most effective habitats with limited acres. Educating and enrolling more managers on how to create better habitat is the only chance at sustaining populations
Beam Halo Monitoring at CDF
Losses from the proton and antiproton beams of the Fermilab Tevatron have
been shown to produce a halo which contribute to backgrounds to physics signals
in the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). To provide a measure of the beam
halo and losses, we have installed arrays of scintillation counters on both
sides of the CDF detector. We describe here the physical configuration of these
counters, their implementation and performance within the Fermilab Accelerator
Control Network (ACNET). We show correlations between these new devices and the
accelerator operating conditions. We point out that the use of these monitors
is leading to improvement in the accelerator operations and reduced backgrounds
in CDF.Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures, submitted to NIM
Measurement of the radiation field surrounding the Collider Detector at Fermilab
We present here the first direct and detailed measurements of the spatial
distribution of the ionizing radiation surrounding a hadron collider
experiment. Using data from two different exposures we measure the effect of
additional shielding on the radiation field around the Collider Detector at
Fermilab (CDF). Employing a simple model we parameterize the ionizing radiation
field surrounding the detector.Comment: PDF document, 5 pages, including 10 encapsulated postscript figures:

Beam induced backgrounds: CDF experience
We summarize the experiences of the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment in the presence of backgrounds originating from the counter circulating beams in the Fermilab Tevatron. These backgrounds are measured and their sources identified. Finally, we outline the strategies employed to reduce the effects of these backgrounds on the experiment
