Apparent Diffusion Coefficient in Invasive Ductal Breast Carcinoma: Correlation with Detailed Histologic Features and the Enhancement Ratio on Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced MR Images
Purpose. To investigate the correlation of Apperent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC) values in invasive ductal breast carcinomas with detailed histologic features and enhancement ratios on dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI. Methods and Materials. Dynamic MR images and diffusion-weighted images (DWIs) of invasive ductal breast carcinomas were reviewed in 25 (26 lesions) women. In each patient, DWI, T2WI, T1WI, and dynamic images were obtained. The ADC values of the 26 carcinomas were calculated with b-factors of 0 and 1000 s/mm(2) using echoplanar DWI. Correlations of the ADC values were examined on dynamic MRI with enhancement ratios (early to delayed phase: E/D ratio) and detailed histologic findings for each lesion, including cellular density, the size of cancer nests, and architectural features of the stroma (broad, narrow, and delicate) between cancer nests. Results. The mean ADC was 0.915 ± 0.151 × 10(−3) mm(2)/sec. Cellular density was significantly correlated with ADC values (P = .0184) and E/D ratios (P = .0315). The ADC values were also significantly correlated to features of the stroma (broad to narrow, P = .0366). Conclusion. The findings suggest that DWIs reflect the growth patterns of carcinomas, including cellular density and architectural features of the stroma, and E/D ratios may also be closely correlated to cellular density
Retroperitoneoscopic Nephrectomy for Treatment of a Case of Left Single Ectopic Ureter Accompanied by Dysplastic Kidney
We report the case of a 7-year-old girl with a single ectopic ureter who was treated with retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomy for a chief complaint of urinary incontinence. Preoperative CT showed a contrasted dysplastic kidney of 1cm in the renal fossa and a left ureteral opening into the vagina. Retroperitoneoscopic left nephrectomy was conducted with opening of the lateroconal fascia to enable identification of the dysplastic kidney. No intraoperative complications were encountered. Urinary incontinence improved immediately after surgery. This case shows that a retroperitoneal approach can be used in nephrectomy if the position of the kidney can be determined preoperatively
Modulation of cortisol responses to the DEX/CRH test by polymorphisms of the interleukin-1beta gene in healthy adults
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recently, hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function assessed with the combined dexamethasone (DEX)/corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) test has been shown to be associated with response to antidepressant treatment. A polymorphism (rs16944) in the interleukin-1beta (<it>IL-1β</it>) gene has also been reported to be associated with the medication response in depression. These findings prompted us to examine the possible association between <it>IL-1β </it>gene polymorphisms and HPA axis function assessed with the DEX/CRH test.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>DEX/CRH test was performed in 179 healthy volunteers (45 males: mean age 40.5 ± 15.8 years; 134 females: mean age 47.1 ± 13.2 years). Five tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of <it>IL-1β </it>gene (rs2853550, rs1143634, rs1143633, rs1143630, rs16944) were selected at an r<sup>2 </sup>threshold of 0.80 with a minor allele frequency > 0.1. Genotyping was performed by the TaqMan allelic discrimination assay. A two-way factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed with the DEX/CRH test results as the dependent variable and genotype and gender as independent variables. To account for multiple testing, <it>P </it>values < 0.01 were considered statistically significant for associations between the genotypes and the cortisol levels.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The cortisol levels after DEX administration (DST-Cortisol) showed significant associations with the genotypes of rs16944 (<it>P </it>= 0.00049) and rs1143633 (<it>P </it>= 0.0060), with no significant gender effect or genotype × gender interaction. On the other hand, cortisol levels after CRH administration (DEX/CRH-Cortisol) were affected by gender but were not significantly influenced by the genotype of the examined SNPs, with no significant genotype × gender interaction.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results suggest that genetic variations in the <it>IL-1β </it>gene contribute to the HPA axis alteration assessed by DST-Cortisol in healthy subjects. On the other hand, no significant associations of the <it>IL-1β </it>gene polymorphisms with the DEX/CRH-Cortisol were observed. Confirmation of our findings in futures studies may add new insight into the communication between the immune system and the HPA axis.</p
Compilation of Eleven New Heat Flow Measurements on the Japanese Islands
New land heat flow data at eleven localities in Japan are presented. There are four localities in the Tohoku District, one in the Kanto District, three in the Shikoku District, one in the Chugoku District and two. in the Kyushu District. The obtained heat flow values, varying from 1.28 HFU (1HFU=1O-6 cal/cm2 sec) to 21.6 HFU, (i.e. from 53.5 to 905mW/m2), are in general agreement with the previously estimated heat flow distribution in the area.日本での未発表の陸上地殻熱流量の値をまとめて報告する.測定地点は東北地方に4地点,関東地方に1地点,四国地方に3地点,中国地方に1地点,九州地方に2地点の合計11地点である.地殻熱流量の値は1.28HFU(1HFU=10-6 cal/cm2 sec)から21.6HFUまで(53.6mW/m2から905mW/m2まで)変化しているが,これまでに得られた地殻熱流量分布の傾向とほぼ一致している
