Lower Devonian Brachiopods from the Fukuji Formation, Central Japan

    Get PDF
The Lower Devonian brachiopod fauna is described for the first time in Japan. The faunal content of the Fukuji Formation indicates a certain degree of endemism. There are distinguished sixteen forms, of which Isorthis (Isorthis) fukujiensis, Leptostrophia japonica, and Eosprifer variplicatus are newly described

Microfossils of the core sample GDP-11-15 from the Amami Plateau, the northern margin of the Philippines Sea

    Get PDF
The micropaleontological studies of a gravity core taken from a depth of 1, 830 m on the Amami Plateau, situated at the northern margin of the Philippine Sea, have revealed a presence of hiatus between the late Pliocene and the late Pleistocene sediments. Furthermore, the conspicuous difference in the water depths of the accumulation of sediments is recognized between the portions above and below the hiatus. Consequently, it is considered that the plateau submerged with the amount of about 1, 000 m during the latest Pliocene and early Pleistocene. Lastly two foraminiferal species are described: Globocassidulina ikebei and Pleurostomella delicata

The eleventh research cruise of Japanese Geodynamics Project in the West Pacific was carried out by the R/V Tokaidaigaku-maru II in August, 1974. During this cruise, in which the authors participated, many traverses of echo sounding and seismic reflection profiling and frequent sampling of bottom sediments were undertaken

Image Processing of Fossil Growth Patterns for Paleo-Geochronology.

[Abstract] Utility of an image processing device combined with the high resolution CCD camera is explored for paleo-geochronogical investigation of fossil growth patterns. Bivalve fragment (Miocene, Japan), spiriferid brachiopod (Permian, Australia) and stromatolite (Precambrian, Mauritania) are analyzed. Enlargement of high contrast images turns out to be very useful to reveal hitherto unseen features preserved in these fossil growth patterns
