DNA unwinding component of the nonhistone chromatin proteins

A subclass of nonhistone chromatin proteins from rat liver, previously shown to exhibit high affinity for DNA, has been fractionated by single-stranded DNA-agarose affinity chromatography. The protein fraction that bound to DNA-agarose in 0.19 M NaCl-buffer and was eluted with 2 M NaCl-buffer is enriched for a protein component of approximately 20,000 daltons and exhibits preferential binding to denatured DNA. This nonhistone protein fraction specific for single strands binds to DNA in a non-species-specific manner, and causes helix-coil transition of synthetic poly[d(A-T)· d(A-T)] at 25 degrees, as indicated by the increase in absorbance of ultraviolet light at 260 nm. The observed hyperchromicity does not result from any nuclease activity in the protein fraction, because addition of Mg+2 results in partial hypochromic shift, and the protein/DNA complex is retained by nitrocellulose filters

DERIVED DEMAND FOR WHEAT BY CLASS

To quantify price responsiveness and economic substitutability among wheat classes, derived demand functions were specified from a normalized quadratic profit function. Own-price and cross-price elasticities were estimated for hard red winter, hard red spring, soft wheat (combined red and white), and durum wheat. In general, soft wheat varieties were less responsive to their own price than were hard wheat varieties. Cross-price elasticities indicate that hard red winter wheat, hard red spring wheat, and soft wheat varieties are economic substitutes. Design for a mobile meals program through home health care

The purpose of this project was to establish criteria for design and implementation of a mobile meals program. Mr. Carmel Home Health Care decided to develop such a program to service patients and other individuals within the commu­nity who were unable to prepare or obtain meals themselves. Mobile meal programs through other agencies provided a valu­able community service, yet the development of a program would eliminate referrals to these competitive services. Show Quality Quarter Horse Auctions: Price Determinants and Buy-Back Practices

This study estimates the price determinants of show quality quarter horses sold at auction. Several characteristics including genetic and physical traits, quality of pedigree, and performance record of the horse, as well as the horse's offspring, were found to significantly impact selling price. Sale order positively affected price and appears to be driven by buyers rather than intentional ordering of the horses. A common practice at horse auctions is for the seller to reject the final bid offered and buy back the horse. Laserprobe 40Ar/39Ar dating of strain fringes: Mid-Cretaceous synconvergent orogen-parallel extension in the interior of the Sevier orogen

[1] UV and CO2 laser-probe 40Ar/39Ar in situ analyses of phlogopite and muscovite in fibrous strain fringes from greenschist-facies metamorphic rocks document mica growth ages at temperatures lower than their closure temperatures, and therefore directly date deformation. The new dates resolve the age of the earliest ductile fabric recorded in the Raft River–Albion–Grouse Creek metamorphic core complex of Utah and Idaho. Phlogopite was dated in quartz-calcite-phlogopite strain fringes around pyrite in Pennsylvanian-Permian rocks from the Grouse Creek Mountains (Utah) using both the UV and CO2 laser probe; muscovite was dated in quartz-muscovite strain fringes around pyrite in deformed Jurassic sills from the Black Pine Mountains (Idaho) using the CO2 laser probe. Phlogopite 40Ar/39Ar ages for individual strain fringes (Grouse Creek Mountains) range from 92 Ma to 110 Ma, with the most reliable ages ranging from 101 Ma to 110 Ma (mean age, 105.0 ± 5.8 Ma). Muscovite 40Ar/39Ar ages for individual strain fringes (Black Pine Mountains) range from 97 Ma to 112 Ma (mean age, 104.7 ± 5.8 Ma). Strain fringes are associated with a subhorizontal foliation and a generally N-trending elongation lineation exhibiting components of top-to-the-north simple shear and coaxial strain accommodating N-S extension and subvertical shortening. Midcrustal northward flow at 105 (±6) Ma within the interior of the Sevier orogen, coeval with east-directed shortening in the foreland and with plate convergence, records orogen-parallel synconvergent extension. We favor gravitational relaxation of structural culminations resulting from focused crustal shortening as a driving mechanism for orogen-parallel flow
