Student involvement in clubs and organizations related to undergraduate field of study [abstract]

Abstract only availableThis study analyzed a common problem facing departments within the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources at the University of Missouri. Many departmental clubs struggle to build membership, while other student organizations with no direct congruency to a student's undergraduate degree flourish with membership. Why do students choose not to join departmental clubs or organizations that correspond with their major? A three part Delphi study was conducted to identify what factors influenced a student's decision to not be involved in their departmental club or organization. Participants in the study represented CAFNR undergraduate majors relating to more than 15 clubs and organizations. Results indicated that a student's decision to be involved in departmental clubs and organizations is very individualized and advisors must seek to understand each student's decision in order to effectively recruit and retain membership in student organizations related to undergraduate field of study.CAFNR On Campus Research Internshi

USE OF ALTERNATIVE DEPRECIATION METHODS TO ESTIMATE FARM TRACTOR VALUES

    Get PDF
Six depreciation methods were used to simulate the value of farm tractors with indexed and expected prices. Accuracy of simulated values was evaluated using paired t-tests of mean absolute percentage errors and forecast accuracy regression models. Results varied with age and use. Some depreciation methods were more accurate than others.Farm Management, Financial Economics,

Authoritarianism in the Conversation of Gestures

    Get PDF
Current studies of attitudes have relied upon written responses and the most obvious form of communication, the verbal. This study explores the nature of authoritarianism as expressed through body and head positions in interaction. Measures of role embracement were developed and evaluated. High authoritarians were found to be more rigid across situations than low authoritarians and to embrace the leadership role more often when subordinated than did low authoritarians.http://web.ku.edu/~starjrn

Fairgoers’ Attitudes Toward Youth Livestock Exhibits at the California State Fair

    Get PDF
Developing public and policy maker understanding of agriculture and natural resources is a national research priority of the American Association for Agricultural Education. Because of cultural and geographic distancing from agriculture, consumers\u27 ability to obtain firsthand knowledge of agriculture may be limited to a handful of experiences including local, county, and state fairs. As such, agriculturalists\u27 opportunities to communicate with the public about production agriculture may be limited to these experiences. Youth livestock exhibitors fill a gap in the agricultural education system. While a body of research exists about agricultural literacy among youth and adult groups, few studies exist concerning the impact of youth livestock show exhibits upon fairgoers. This study employed a survey research method using semantic differential scales with a then-now approach. Fairgoers, who had been through the youth livestock exhibits at the California State Fair, were asked about their attitudes toward the exhibits. Findings led to the conclusion viewing livestock exhibits and interacting with youth exhibitors resulted in fairgoers having more positive attitudes toward animal agriculture. Interaction between fairgoers and livestock exhibits should be encouraged and exhibitors should be prepared to view interactions with fairgoers as opportunities to educate about agriculture
