    Radiation tolerance of nanocrystalline ceramics: insights from Yttria Stabilized Zirconia.

    Materials for applications in hostile environments, such as nuclear reactors or radioactive waste immobilization, require extremely high resistance to radiation damage, such as resistance to amorphization or volume swelling. Nanocrystalline materials have been reported to present exceptionally high radiation-tolerance to amorphization. In principle, grain boundaries that are prevalent in nanomaterials could act as sinks for point-defects, enhancing defect recombination. In this paper we present evidence for this mechanism in nanograined Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ), associated with the observation that the concentration of defects after irradiation using heavy ions (Kr(+), 400 keV) is inversely proportional to the grain size. HAADF images suggest the short migration distances in nanograined YSZ allow radiation induced interstitials to reach the grain boundaries on the irradiation time scale, leaving behind only vacancy clusters distributed within the grain. Because of the relatively low temperature of the irradiations and the fact that interstitials diffuse thermally more slowly than vacancies, this result indicates that the interstitials must reach the boundaries directly in the collision cascade, consistent with previous simulation results. Concomitant radiation-induced grain growth was observed which, as a consequence of the non-uniform implantation, caused cracking of the nano-samples induced by local stresses at the irradiated/non-irradiated interfaces

    Effect of Crude Glycerin Concentration on Growing Steer Performance in Forage Diets

    The effect of increasing crude glycerin concentration was evaluated in a 91- d growing trial utilizing 60 steers. Crude glycerin was included at 0, 4, 8, and 12% of dietary DM in diets consisting of 50% wheat straw; 22.9- 37.0% wet corn bran, and 8.0- 10.1% soybean meal. Crude glycerin replaced wet corn bran and soybean meal was added to maintain dietary CP. Steer ending BW was not different among treatments. Th ere was a quadratic increase in DMI from 0 to 8% crude glycerin and subsequent decrease at 12%. Th ere was no difference in ADG or feed efficiency among crude glycerin concentrations. Therefore, crude glycerin appears to have an energy value slightly less than wet corn bran in a forage- based diet

    External validation of a simple clinical tool used to predict falls in people with Parkinson disease

Recently a simple clinical prediction tool based only on fall history in the previous year, freezing of gait in the past month, and gait velocity <1.1 m/s was developed and accurately predicted future falls in a sample of individuals with PD. METHODS: We sought to externally validate the utility of the tool by administering it to a different cohort of 171 individuals with PD. Falls were monitored prospectively for 6 months following predictor assessment. RESULTS: The tool accurately discriminated future fallers from non-fallers (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.83; 95% CI 0.76–0.89), comparable to the developmental study. CONCLUSION: The results validated the utility of the tool for allowing clinicians to quickly and accurately identify an individual's risk of an impending fall.Davis Phinney Foundation, Parkinson Disease Foundation, NIH, APDA.     Defining a Civil War battlefield: recent archaeological investigations at the Pickett\u27s Mill State Historic Site, Paulding County, Georgia.

    Recent investigations at the Pickett\u27s Mill State Historic Site have yielded new insights into the Civil War battle that occurred in May 1864. Military and historical sources have documented that the major battle took place in a ravine, but that skirmishes also occurred in adjacent areas, including a large, open wheat field. Some reports have suggested that Confederate soldiers had forced Union troops out of the ravine into this field where they became exposed. In the summer of 2006 a variety of different archaeological techniques were employed to determine what role the wheat field played in the battle. This paper describes the archaeological techniques that were used and their effectiveness in identifying and recovering military items associated with the battle. Among them, metal detectors proved to be the most effective tool with hundreds of artifacts being recovered from the site

    Yearling steers rotationally grazing smooth bromegrass were individually supplemented monensin at 0 or 200 mg with modified distillers grains plus solubles (MDGS) at .05, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8% BW. Cannulated steers continuously grazing smooth bromegrass were assigned randomly to one of two treatments: 0.4% BW MDGS supplementation with 0 or 200 mg monensin. Monensin did not affect ADG of steers supplemented MDGS ≥ 0.4% BW. Steers supplemented with monensin had a decreasein estimated average forage intakefrom 16.16 lb to 14.75 lb/OM daily

    Effect of Winter Distillers Grains Supplementation Level on Spayed Heifer Performance

    The effects of winter level of supplementation were evaluated using spayed heifers grazing winter corn residue followed by brome grass and native range grazing periods and finished on a common diet. Distillers grains were supplemented during winter corn residue grazing at 3, 5, and 7 lb per heifer daily. Gain during the winter phase increased while summer phase decreased with increasing level of winter supplementation. Th ere were no differences in feedlot performance for either year across treatments. In year 2, HCW increased from 820 to 848 and 855 lb as heifers were supplemented 3, 5, or 7 lb distillers grains

    Heat-flux footprints for I-mode and EDA H-mode plasmas on Alcator C-Mod

    IR thermography is used to measure the heat flux footprints on C-Mod’s outer target in I-mode and EDA H-mode plasmas. The footprint profiles are fit to a function with a simple physical interpretation. The fit parameter that is sensitive to the power decay length into the SOL, λ[subscript SOL], is ~1–3× larger in I-modes than in H-modes at similar plasma current, which is the dominant dependence for the H-mode λ[subscript SOL]. In contrast, the fit parameter sensitive to transport into the private-flux-zone along the divertor leg is somewhat smaller in I-mode than in H-mode, but otherwise displays no obvious dependence on I[subscript p], B[subscript t], or stored energy. A third measure of the footprint width, the “integral width”, is not significantly different between H- and I-modes. Also discussed are significant differences in the global power flows of the H-modes with “favorable” ∇B drift direction and those of the I-modes with “unfavorable” ∇B drift direction.United States.
