Mapping industry 4.0 in the Portuguese industry
With Industry 4.0 and digital transformation, organisations have undergone enormous
changes in business models, engineering, manufacturing, processes, and technologies.
Hence, the need to investigate the status of its current knowledge and maturity. This
research, supported by a survey for data collection (fifty valid responses), aims to analyse
the knowledge and maturity (on a five-scale level) of Industry 4.0 in Portugal from the
perspective of industrial companies. The conclusions highlight that the Portuguese
organisations will have to adapt to the impact of Industry 4.0 on how their business is
being developed and encompass the digitisation with new technologies. Unfortunately,
adopting the concepts and methodologies inherent to Industry 4.0 is still incipient in
Portugal, suggesting a possible lack of knowledge and poor leadership. Companies need to
strategically change towards business models that are more flexible to the potential of
technology and have a closer relationship with customers, ensuring increased operational
autonomy and repositioning products and services. Having a team dedicated to digitisation
increases the Industry 4.0 maturity level. Companies with a maturity Medium/High level of
Products and Innovations have a higher level of perception based on their capacity for
innovation, supported by new digital models and tools. Concerning Human Resources, the
digitisation of knowledge management means and the promotion of new ideas for digital
transformation increases its I4.0 maturity level. This study contributes to the start of the art
of Industry 4.0 in Portuguese companies, mapping its present status, and providing insights
for its future enhanced adoption.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Analysis of a customer relationship management tool in a shipping company
Today’s society is technologically advanced, the world is just a click away and our companies’ customers have easy access to all the information. Therefore, they are increasingly demanding, wanting more and better at a lower cost. Using as a case study a shipping company, a system of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) was analysed to verify what reasons led to its abandonment and to realise what to do to reverse such situation. In this industry product differentiation is practically null, so the customer’s choice comes down to price. However, customers are paying more attention to customer service, therefore companies are developing stronger relationships with them. The construction of such relationships implies data collection on the client, from which one can offer services of greater value. This may lead to partnerships and competitive advantages. Thus, the use of CRM tools is being promoted for CRM tools present themselves as a valuable asset. In the end, suggestions are presented, ranging from improvements to the existing system, to more complex suggestions, costlier or breaking with the existing mode of relationship and dialogue between company and customers, but that, in the future, will certainly translate into advantages over competing companies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A multicriteria decision model for the selection of information system for a logistics company using MMASSI/TI
The aim of this work is to apply a methodology of decision support based on a multi-criteria decision analyses
(MCDA), model that allows the evaluation and selection of an information system in a Logistics context. We
carried out a literature review on supply chain management, logistics and decision theory to support all the
practical work. A multi-criteria methodology for decision making support – Multi-criteria Methodology for the
Assessment and Selection of Information Systems / Information Technologies (MMASSI / IT) based on
logistics processes was applied during the MCDA, supported by a computer application. The ranking of the
information systems best suited the decisional context was obtained and its sensitivity and robustness analyses performed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Information systems for industrial processes support and optimization
This paper presents the Document Management Systems (DMS) as a support decision tool to optimize Toyota Caetano Portugal S.A. (TCAP) processes performance. The created systems were developed on the best practices of a Business Project Management (BPM), for better structural implementation. The first system implementation was related to the warehouse materials requirement process, where an excel template with VBA functions for fill automatization was built. It had a reduction of the overall paper consumption and time execution optimization, which means the gain of approximately of 0,10€ and 2,09€ per unit produced, respectively. It was also obtained an elimination of 4538 paper sheets per year. A second system was also developed, in order to provide a Decision Support System (DSS) for documental management. Several User Forms were developed in VBA code in order to provide a flexible and intuitively user interface experience. It reduced the users time decision making and the administrator maintenance, by a total of 26 minutes, corresponding to a 1,61€ reduction per unit built, which means an efficiency increase of 42%.
The present work fits in the company's strategy for a more sustainable environment being a positive driver of Industry 4.0 implementation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Improvement in planning and resource management for an automotive company’s parts feeding system
The increasing sophistication of the automotive market and the constant change in customer requirements increases
companies’ concern to ensure efficient internal logistic flows in line with Just-In-Time philosophy and Lean
principles, to deal with wastes and variability. Variability arises from the growing differentiation of products, from
the adoption of multi and mixed model assembly lines, and from the uncertainty in customer demand resulting from
the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19. Considering the automotive supplier company as research subject, several
problems were found to be compromising the efficiency of one of its in-plant parts’ feeding systems, the most critical
problem being the lack of planning and management of resources (human and material) needed to perform the logistic
service. Through Action-Research methodology stages, the actions taken culminated in the development of a
simulation and decision-support tool for the component supply system resource management and efficiency
improvement. The simulations made revealed reliable and adjusted results of workload and workforce to face the
variations in customer demand and the existing product mix. After the tool creation, resource planning and balancing
was no longer based on managers experience and empirical knowledge only but based on scientific knowledge:
concise and reliable data from information systems, measurements, study of times, and literature review on in-plant
milk run systems, lean, just-in-time and continuous improvement techniques.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Deficit Irrigation in Mediterranean Fruit Trees and Grapevines: Water Stress Indicators and Crop Responses
In regions with Mediterranean climate, water is the major environmental resource that limits growth and production of plants, experiencing a long period of water scarcity during summer. Despite the fact that most plants developed morphological, anatomical, physiological, and biochemical mechanisms that allow to cope with such environments, these harsh summer conditions reduce growth, yield, and fruit quality. Irrigation is implemented to overcome such effects. Conditions of mild water deficit imposed by deficit irrigation strategies, with minimal effects on yield, are particularly suitable for such regions. Efficient irrigation strategies and scheduling techniques require the quantification of crop water requirements but also the identification of pertinent water stress indicators and their threshold. This chapter reviews the scientific information about deficit irrigation recommendations and thresholds concerning water stress indicators on peach trees, olive trees, and grapevines, as case studies
