Spectral Evolution of Circinus X-1 Along its Orbit
We report on the spectral analysis of Circinus X-1 observed by the ASCA
satellite in March 1998 along one orbital period. The luminosity of the source
(in the 0.1-100 keV band) ranges from erg s at the
periastron (orbital phase 0.01) to erg s at orbital
phase 0.3. From the spectral analysis and the lightcurve we argue that Cir X-1
shows three states along the orbital evolution. The first state is at the
orbital phase interval 0.97-0.3: the luminosity becames super-Eddington and a
strong flaring activity is present. In this state a shock could form in the
inner region of the system due to the super-Eddington accretion rate, producing
an outflow of ionized matter whose observational signature could be the
prominent absorption edge at keV observed in the energy spectrum at
these phases. In the second state, corresponding to the orbital phase interval
between 0.3 and 0.7, the accretion rate is sub-Eddington and we observe a
weaker outflow, with smaller hydrogen column: the absorption edge is now at
keV with an optical depth a factor of 2.5 to 6 smaller. The third
state corresponds to the orbital phase interval 0.78-0.97. In this state the
best fit model to the spectrum requires the presence of a partial covering
component, indicating that the emission from the compact object is partially
absorbed by neutral matter, probably the atmosphere of the companion star

Scattering and Iron Fluorescence Revealed During Absorption Dips in Circinus X-1
We show that dramatic spectral evolution associated with dips occurring near
phase zero in RXTE observations of Cir X-1 is well-fit by variable and at times
heavy absorption (N_H > 10^24 cm^-2) of a bright component, plus an underlying
faint component which is not attenuated by the variable column and whose flux
is ~10% of that of the unabsorbed bright component. A prominent Fe emission
line at ~6.5 keV is evident during the dips. The absolute line flux outside the
dips is similar to that during the dips, indicating that the line is associated
with the faint component. These results are consistent with a model in which
the bright component is radiation received directly from a compact source while
the faint component may be attributed to scattered radiation. Our results are
also generally consistent with those of Brandt et al., who found that a
partial- covering model could explain ASCA spectra of a low-to-high transition
in Cir X-1. The relative brightness of the two components in our model requires
a column density of ~2*10^23 cm^-2 if the faint component is due to Thomson
scattering in material that mostly surrounds the source. We find that
illumination of such a scattering cloud by the observed direct component would
produce an Fe K-alpha fluorescence flux that is in rough agreement with the
flux of the observed emission line. We also conclude that if the scattering
medium is not highly ionized, our line of sight to the compact source does not
pass through it. Finally, we discuss simple pictures of the absorbers

The first definitive Middle Jurassic atoposaurid (Crocodylomorpha, Neosuchia), and a discussion on the genus Theriosuchus
Atoposaurids were a clade of semiaquatic crocodyliforms known from the Late Jurassic to the latest Cretaceous. Tentative remains from Europe, Morocco, and Madagascar may extend their range into the Middle Jurassic. Here we report the first unambiguous Middle Jurassic (late BajocianâBathonian) atoposaurid: an anterior dentary from the Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK. A comprehensive review of atoposaurid specimens demonstrates that this dentary can be referred to Theriosuchus based on several derived characters, and differs from the five previously recognized species within this genus. Despite several diagnostic features, we conservatively refer it to Theriosuchus sp., pending the discovery of more complete material. As the oldest known definitively diagnostic atoposaurid, this discovery indicates that the oldest members of this group were small-bodied, had heterodont dentition, and were most likely widespread components of European faunas. Our review of mandibular and dental features in atoposaurids not only allows us to present a revised diagnosis of Theriosuchus, but also reveals a great amount of variability within this genus, and indicates that there are currently five valid species that can be differentiated by unique combinations of dental characteristics. This variability can be included in future broad-scale cladistics analyses of atoposaurids and closely related crocodyliforms, which promise to help untangle the complicated taxonomy and evolutionary history of Atoposauridae
Library Data Integration : Towards BIBFRAME Mapping to EDM
Integration of library data into the Linked Data environment is a key issue in li-braries and is approached on the basis of interoperability between library data conceptual models. Achieving interoperability for different representations of the same or related entities between the library and cultural heritage domains shall enhance rich bibliographic data reusability and support the development of new data-driven information services. This paper aims to contribute to the desired in-teroperability by attempting to map core semantic paths between the BIBFRAME and EDM conceptual models. BIBFRAME is developed by the Library of Con-gress to support transformation of legacy library data in MARC format into linked data. EDM is the model developed for and used in the Europeana Cultural Heritage aggregation portal
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study to assess the immediate effect of sublingual glyceryl trinitrate on the ankle brachial pressure index, claudication, and maximum walking distance of patients with intermittent claudication
AbstractPurpose:The goal of the present study was to assess the immediate effect of sublingual glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) in patients with intermittent claudication. Methods: We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study. Inclusion criteria consisted of history of intermittent claudication, resting ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI) of 1.00 or less, a 20% or greater fall in ABPI after exercise, and maximum walking distance (MWD) of less than 250 m. Patients already receiving nitrates were excluded. In study 1, patients (n = 25) underwent a standard exercise test after randomization to receive either 800 ÎŒg of sublingual GTN or placebo. The postexercise ABPI was recorded. Then, the crossover portion of the study was performed. In study 2, patients (n = 22) had their claudication distance and MWD measured. They then were randomized to receive either GTN or placebo spray, and the exercise test was repeated, with the claudication distance and MWD recorded, followed by the crossover portion of the study. Statistical analysis was performed with the Wilcoxon matched pairs signed ranks test and the Mann-Whitney U test. Results:In study 1, the median postexercise ABPIs for placebo and GTN were 0.29 and 0.36 (P = .0001). In study 2, the median claudication distance for both placebo and GTN groups was 70 m (P = .59). The median MWD for the placebo and GTN groups was 105 and 125 m (P = .0084) Conclusion: GTN can decrease the fall in ABPI after exercise and increase the MWD. (J Vasc Surg 1998;28:895-900.
Evidence for a parsec scale X-ray jet from the accreting neutron star Circinus X-1
We analyzed the zero-order image of a 50 ks Chandra gratings observation of
Circinus X-1, taken in 2005 during the source's low-flux state. Circinus X-1 is
an accreting neutron star that exhibits ultra-relativistic arcsecond-scale
radio jets and diffuse arcminute-scale radio jets and lobes. The image shows a
clear excess along the general direction of the north-western counter-jet,
coincident with the radio emission, suggesting that it originates either in the
jet itself or in the shock the jet is driving into its environment. This makes
Circinus X-1 the first neutron star for which an extended X-ray jet has been
detected. The kinetic jet power we infer is significantly larger than the
minimum power required for the jet to inflate the large scale radio nebula.Comment: Added journal reference, corrected on reference and typo in labels

Evolution of Hard X-Ray Spectra Along the Branches in Cir X-1
Using the data from the PCA and HEXTE on board the RXTE satellite, we
investigate the evolution of the 3-200 keV spectra of the peculiar low mass
X-ray binary (LMXB) Cir X-1 along the branches on its hardness-intensity
diagram (HID) from the vertical horizontal branch (VHB), through the horizontal
horizontal branch (HHB) and normal branch (NB), to the flaring branch (FB). We
detect a power-law hard component in the spectra. It is found that the derived
photon indices () of the power-law hard component are correlated with
the position on the HID. The power-law component dominates the X-ray emission
of Cir X-1 in the energy band higher than keV. The fluxes of the
power-law component are compared with those of the bremsstrahlung component in
the spectra. A possible origin of the power-law hard component is discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, ApJ Letter accepte
Lifetimes of antiferromagnetic magnons in two and three dimensions: experiment, theory, and numerics
A high-resolution neutron spectroscopic technique is used to measure
momentum-resolved magnon lifetimes in the prototypical two- and
three-dimensional antiferromagnets Rb2MnF4 and MnF2, over the full Brillouin
zone and a wide range of temperatures. We rederived theories of the lifetime
resulting from magnon-magnon scattering, thereby broadening their applicability
beyond asymptotically small regions of wavevector and temperature.
Corresponding computations, combined with a small contribution reflecting
collisions with domain boundaries, yield excellent quantitative agreement with

Effects of maternal subnutrition during early pregnancy on cow hematological profiles and offspring physiology and vitality in two beef breeds
This experiment evaluated the effects of subnutrition during early gestation on hematology in cows (Bos Taurus) and on hematological, metabolic, endocrine, and vitality parameters in their calves. Parda de Montaña and Pirenaica dams were inseminated and assigned to either a control (CONTROL, 100% requirements) or a nutrientârestricted group (SUBNUT, 65%) during the first third of gestation. Dam blood samples were collected on days 20 and 253 of gestation, and calf samples were obtained during the first days of life. Pirenaica dams presented higher red series parameters than Parda de Montaña dams, both in the first and the last months of gestation. During early pregnancy, granulocyte numbers and mean corpuscular hemoglobin were lower in PirenaicaâSUBNUT than in PirenaicaâCONTROL cows. Calves from the SUBNUT cows did not show a physiological reduction in red series values in early life, suggesting later maturation of the hematopoietic system. Poor maternal nutrition affected calf endocrine parameters. Newborns from dystocic parturitions showed lower NEFA concentrations and weaker vitality responses. In conclusion, maternal nutrition had shortâterm effects on cow hematology, Pirenaica cows showing a higher susceptibility to undernutrition; and a longâterm effect on their offspring endocrinology, SUBNUT newborns showing lower levels of IGFâ1 and higher levels of cortisol.This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Business and the European Union Regional Development Funds (INIA RTA 2013â00059âC02 and INIA RZP 2015â001) and the Government of Aragon under the Grant Research Group Funds (A14_17R).
