    Evaluation and analysis of the performance of masonary infills during the Northridge earthquake

    Observations were made of the behavior of masonry infills in structural frames during the Northridge earthquake, and an analytical technique was developed for analyzing infilled frame structures. Infills near the epicenter suffered significant damage, but in several cases contributed to the seismic resistance and life safety performance. Older infill buildings in downtown Los Angeles experienced intensity of shaking similar to that expected in central/eastern United States earthquakes. The infills experienced some cracking, but otherwise complemented the lateral resistance of the weak building frames. This suggests infill frame buildings in moderate seismic zones may provide at least life safety functions without the need for expensive retrofit. A developed analytical technique was used to analyze two buildings for which the observed behavior and records from the Northridge earthquake were available. The analytical technique was based on using a piecewise linear equivalent strut for the infill. Parameters for the strut were obtained by examining the results of a wide variety of experimental infill tests. The strut method is easy to incorporate in standard linear analyses, and converges quite rapidly. The strut method was applied to two structures that had records from the Northridge earthquake. Very favorable comparisons between the analytical method and observed response were obtained.     Social communication supports and services for adults with ASD: Parents’ perceptions of barriers and needs

    Adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience significant social communication challenges that impact key areas of life, including relationship and employment success. Evidence points to great potential for social communication growth in adults with ASD; however, families’ access to supports and services is limited by lack of funding and accessibility. Scant research has been dedicated to unearthing the experiences of adults with ASD and their parents pertaining to social communication supports and services. This qualitative study gathered perceptions from 17 parents through focus groups aimed at determining barriers to and gaps in the system of social communication supports and services for adults with ASD. Using a phenomenological approach, conceptual content analysis was used to examine the parents’ perceptions and determine coding categories. Analyses revealed a number of barriers to effective use of such services and supports, and wishes for changes to facilitate services and supports in this area. Implications for professionals and policymakers are presented

    The University of Richmond sits less than a mile from the most ecologically and historically important river in Virginia yet many students have never even set foot in the James. This poster analyzes the accessibility, cost, and potential outcomes of a University of Richmond-owned Riverfront property on the James River. Such a property promises to engage all five goals of the strategic plan by 1) creating innovative paths to academic excellence, 2) providing an open-air outreach space to recruit academically talented students, 3) increasing the diversity of high impact practices on campus, 4) creating new opportunities for enhancing alumni engagement, and 5) inspiring environmental, financial, and social stewardship through an intentional enduring bond with Virginia’s most important body of fresh running water. The University’s proximity to the James River provides an opportunity to invest in the engaged education of the student body while also purchasing property that will only go up in value over time.
