A New Solid Deuterium Source of Ultra-Cold Neutrons
In polarized neutron decay, the angular correlation between the neutron spin and the
direction of emission of the electron is characterized by the coefficient A. Measuring
A involves determining the forward-backward asymmetry of the decay beta with
respect to the direction of the neutron polarization. The value of A, when combined
with measurements of the neutron lifetime, determines the values of the vector and
axial vector weak coupling constants, Gv and GA. The value of Gv can also be
determined by measurements of superallowed nuclear beta decay and by requiring
that the Cabibo-Kobayashi-Maskawi (CKM) mixing matrix be unitary along with the
measured value of other elements of the CKM matrix
First Measurement of the Neutron -Asymmetry with Ultracold Neutrons
We report the first measurement of angular correlation parameters in neutron
-decay using polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN). We utilize UCN with
energies below about 200 neV, which we guide and store for s in a Cu
decay volume. The potential of a static 7 T field
external to the decay volume provides a 420 neV potential energy barrier to the
spin state parallel to the field, polarizing the UCN before they pass through
an adiabatic fast passage (AFP) spin-flipper and enter a decay volume, situated
within a 1 T, superconducting solenoidal spectrometer. We
determine a value for the -asymmetry parameter , proportional to
the angular correlation between the neutron polarization and the electron

The grinch who stole wisdom
Dr. Seuss is wise. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Seuss, 1957) could serve as a parable for our time. It can also be seen as a roadmap for the development of contemplative wisdom. The abiding popularity of How the Grinch Stole Christmas additionally suggests that contemplative wisdom is more readily available to ordinary people, even children, than is normally thought. This matters because from the point of view of contemplatives in any of the world's philosophies or religions, people are confused about wisdom. The content of the nascent field of wisdom studies, they might say, is largely not wisdom at all but rather what it's like to live in a particular kind of prison cell, a well appointed cell perhaps, but not a place that makes possible either personal satisfaction or deep problem solving. I believe that what the contemplative traditions have to say is important; they offer a different orientation to what personal wisdom is, how to develop it, and how to use it in the world than is presently contained in either our popular culture or our sciences. In order to illustrate this I will examine, in some detail, one contemplative path within Buddhism. Buddhism is particularly useful in this respect because its practices are nontheistic and thus avoid many of the cultural landmines associated with the contemplative aspects of Western religions
EGF induces macropinocytosis and SNX1-modulated recycling of E-cadherin
In epithelia, junction proteins are endocytosed for modulation of cell-cell adhesion and cell polarity. In response to growth factors, the cell-cell adhesion protein E-cadherin is internalized from the cell surface with degradation or recycling as potential fates. However, the cellular machinery involved in cadherin internalization and recycling remains controversial. Here we investigated EGF-induced E-cadherin internalization. EGF stimulation of MCF-7 cells resulted in Rac1-modulated macropinocytosis of the E-cadherin-catenin-complex into endosomal compartments that colocalized with EEA1 and the sorting nexin, SNX1. Depletion of cellular SNX1 levels by siRNA resulted in increased intracellular accumulation and turnover of E-cadherin internalized from the cell surface in response to EGF. Moreover, SNX1 was also required for efficient recycling of internalized E-cadherin and re-establishment of epithelial adhesion. Together, these findings demonstrate a role for SNX1 in retrieval of E-cadherin from a degradative endosomal pathway and in membrane trafficking pathways that regulate E-cadherin recycling
The tactical mimicry of social enterprise strategies: acting ‘as if’ in the everyday life of third sector organizations
Using England as a paradigmatic case of the „enterprising up ‟ of the third sector through social enterprise policies and programs, this article sheds light on resistance as enacted through dramaturgical identification with government strategies. Drawing from a longitudinal qualitative research study, which is interpreted via Michel de Certeau‟s theory of the everyday, we present the case study of Teak, a charitable regeneration company, to illustrate how its Chief Executive Liam „acted as ‟ a social entrepreneur in order to gain access to important resources. We establish „tactical mimicry ‟ as a sensitizing concept to suggest that third sector practitioners ‟ identification with the normative premises of „social enterprise ‟ is part of a parasitical prosaics geared toward appropriating public money. While tactical mimicry conforms to strategies only in order to exploit them, its ultimate aim is to increase potentials of collective agency outside the direct influence of power. The contribution we make is threefold: first, we extend the recent debate on productive resistance by highlighting how „playing the game ‟ without changing existing relations of power can nevertheless produce largely favorable outcomes. Second, we suggest that recognition of the productive potential of tactical mimicry requires methodologies which pay attention to the spatial and temporal dynamics of resistance. And third, we argue that explaining „social enterprise‟ without consideration of the non-discursive, mainly financial resources made available to those who identify with it, necessarily risks overlooking a crucial element of the dramaturgical dynamic of discourse
Final results for the neutron β-asymmetry parameter A₀ from the UCNA experiment
The UCNA experiment was designed to measure the neutron β-asymmetry parameter A0 using polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN). UCN produced via downscattering in solid deuterium were polarized via transport through a 7 T magnetic field, and then directed to a 1 T solenoidal electron spectrometer, where the decay electrons were detected in electron detector packages located on the two ends of the spectrometer. A value for A0 was then extracted from the asymmetry in the numbers of counts in the two detector packages. We summarize all of the results from the UCNA experiment, obtained during run periods in 2007, 2008–2009, 2010, and 2011–2013, which ultimately culminated in a 0.67% precision result for A₀
