Interfacial Corrosion of Copper and the Formation of Copper Hydroxychloride

Electrical circuitry is an industry, among many others, heavily using the element of copper. Ensuring the mechanical integrity of Cu is crucial, especially in salt environments, for the multifaceted composition of circuits. 4N NaCl solution (equilibrium concentration in ~84% RH) simulated this three-phase system. Rectangular Cu samples were partially immersed in both ambient and continuous lab air sparging atmospheres to understand waterline corrosion of the metal. Open circuit potentials (OCP) were continuously taken during the immersion testing for a maximum of 5 days. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), Raman spectroscopy, and 3-D microscopy afforded a closer look at the morphology and compositions of the degradation. One conclusion was chloride-containing corrosion product formed on the metal surface. This copper hydroxychloride corrosion product was more concentrated on immersed Cu directly in the waterline zone. Copper oxides (CuO and Cu2O) formed in the spreading zone above the waterline, where cathodic reactions are thought to take place because of a higher pH. The copper oxides are thought to be pH dependent as they correspond location with pH. Three-day immersion experiments of pure Cu in ambient NaOH solutions with different pH values were further conducted to verify that the formation of copper oxides is pH dependent. The results presented CuO formed in pH less than 12 while Cu2O formed in pH more than 12. The continuous sparging of the headspace with lab air significantly altered the corrosion morphology and corrosion production formation, both in the waterline and secondary spreading zones. Cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) experiments of Cu in NaOH solutions with different pH values were conducted to further elucidate the corrosion behavior of Cu in different pH environments. Finally, the Cu/NaCl/Air three-phase corrosion phenomenon is tentatively explained by pH and potential variation based on thermodynamic and kinetic considerations

Change Is Coming: The Movement Toward Diversity in Country Music for Black Artists

    Get PDF
Country music has historically been dominated by Caucasian artists since the birth of the genre in the early 1900s. Over the years, very few African American artists have managed to break through the color barrier of the genre and find sustained success. In recent years, however, the number of black country artists securing major label record deals and experiencing chart success has significantly increased. Many African American artists are finding a foothold in the genre and building noteworthy careers. This paper explores the historical context of black artists within Nashville’s country music genre, the evolution of the country market and current black artists within the genre, and how walls are finally breaking down for African American artists to find commercial success and sustainable careers

Role of formative assessment in predicting academic success among GP registrars: a retrospective longitudinal study

Objectives The James Cook University General Practice Training (JCU GPT) programme’s internal formative exams were compared with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) pre-entry exams to determine ability to predict final performance in the RACGP fellowship exams. Design A retrospective longitudinal study. Setting General Practice (GP) trainees enrolled between 2016 and 2019 at a Registered Training Organisation in regional Queensland, Australia. Participants 376 GP trainees enrolled in the training programme. Exposure measures The pre-entry exams were Multiple-Mini Interviews (MMI), Situational Judgement Test (SJT) and Candidate Assessment and Applied Knowledge Test. The internal formative exams comprised multiple choice questions (MCQ1 and MCQ2), short answer questions, clinical skills and clinical reasoning. Primary outcome measure The college exams were Applied Knowledge Test (AKT), Key Feature Problems (KFP) and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Results Correlations (r), coefficients of determination (R2) and OR were used as parameters for estimating strength of relationship and precision of predictive accuracy. SJT and MMI were moderately (r=0.13 to 0.31) and MCQ1 and MCQ2 highly (r=0.37 to 0.53) correlated with all college exams (p<0.05 to p<0.01), with R2 ranging from 0.070 to 0.376. MCQ1 was predictive of failure in all college exams (AKT: OR=2.32, KFP: OR=3.99; OSCE: OR=3.46); while MCQ2 predicted failure in AKT (OR=2.83) and KFP (OR=3.15). Conclusion We conclude that the internal MCQ formative exams predict performance in the RACGP fellowship exams. We propose that our formative assessment tools could be used as academic markers for early identification of potentially struggling trainees

Adaptation and Formative Evaluation of Online Decision Support to Implement Evidence-Based Strategies to Increase HPV Vaccination Rates in Pediatric Clinics

    Get PDF
Human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination rates remain below national goals in the United States despite the availability of evidence-based strategies to increase rates. The Adolescent Vaccination Program (AVP) is a multi-component intervention demonstrated to increase HPV vaccination rates in pediatric clinics through the implementation of six evidence-based strategies. The purpose of this study, conducted in Houston, Texas, from 2019-2021, was to adapt the AVP into an online decision support implementation tool for standalone use and to evaluate its feasibility for use in community clinics. Phase 1 (Adaptation) comprised clinic interviews

Parents\u27 Stigmatizing Beliefs About the HPV Vaccine and Their Association With Information Seeking Behavior and Vaccination Communication Behaviors

Parents\u27 stigmatizing beliefs about the HPV vaccine, such as beliefs that it promotes adolescent sexual activity, constitute a notable barrier to vaccine uptake. The purpose of this study is to describe the associations between parents\u27 stigmatizing beliefs about the HPV vaccine, psychosocial antecedents to vaccination, and parents\u27 intentions to vaccinate their children. Parents of vaccine-eligible children

Individual-Based Measure of Socio-Economic Disadvantage: Making Identification "Agile"

This project aimed to develop an individual-based measure of socio-economic disadvantage that can assist Australian universities to identify socio-economic disadvantage at the level of the individual student. A mixed-methods design was used. Phase 1 comprised an online questionnaire distributed to staff working in the area of widening participation and student support at each of the 42 universities in Australia (n = 256) and an online questionnaire for undergraduate students at three universities (one a member of the Group of Eight and the other two members of the Innovative Research Universities group – one a multi-campus metropolitan university and one a rural university) (n = 4,114). In Phase 2, five focus groups were conducted with staff and six with students to further explore the issues raised in Phase 1. Phase 3 consisted of a desk audit of university websites to provide data on the information publicly available to students experiencing socio-economic disadvantage. In the final phase, Phase 4, a possible approach to measuring disadvantage was evaluated through its presentation to students at two universities which had been part of Phase 1 (n = 91). The following factors were found to be indicators of socio-economic disadvantage. Whether the student: provides financially for their family; is the first in family to attend university; is experiencing financial hardship; and/or is in receipt of Youth Allowance, Austudy or ABSTUDY during Years 11 and/or 12 (or another Centrelink income and asset-tested entitlement) for a period of at least three months during Years 11 and/or 12 or equivalent. These were found to be questions that students were willing to answer and which would lead to effective and efficient identification
