Electro-optically tunable microring resonators in lithium niobate
Optical microresonators have recently attracted a growing attention in the
photonics community. Their applications range from quantum electro-dynamics to
sensors and filtering devices for optical telecommunication systems, where they
are likely to become an essential building block. The integration of nonlinear
and electro-optical properties in the resonators represents a very stimulating
challenge, as it would incorporate new and more advanced functionality. Lithium
niobate is an excellent candidate material, being an established choice for
electro-optic and nonlinear optical applications. Here we report on the first
realization of optical microring resonators in submicrometric thin films of
lithium niobate. The high index contrast films are produced by an improved
crystal ion slicing and bonding technique using benzocyclobutene. The rings
have radius R=100 um and their transmission spectrum has been tuned using the
electro-optic effect. These results open new perspectives for the use of
lithium niobate in chip-scale integrated optical devices and nonlinear optical

Laxative effects of agarwood on low-fiber diet-induced constipation in rats
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Agarwood (<it>Aquilaria sinensis</it>), well known as incense in Southeast Asia, has been used as a digestive in traditional medicine. We investigated the laxative effects of an ethanol extract of agarwood leaves (EEA) in a rat model of low-fiber diet-induced constipation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A set of rats was bred on a normal diet while another set was placed on a low-fiber diet to induce constipation. The laxative effect of agarwood was then investigated on both sets of rats.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Pretreatment of normal rats with single dose of EEA (600 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly increased frequency and weight of stools. Also, treatments with EEA (300 and 600 mg/kg, p.o.) for 14 days caused a significant increase in stool frequency and weight. Feeding of the animals with a low-fiber diet resulted in a decrease in stool weight, frequency, and water content and also delayed carmine egestion. A single treatment with EEA (600 mg/kg) or senna (150 and 300 mg/kg) significantly increased stool frequency, weight, and water content and also accelerated carmine egestion in the model rats. Once daily administrations of EEA (150 mg/kg), for 14 days, caused a significant increase in water content of stools. The higher doses of EEA (300 and 600 mg/kg) significantly increased frequency, weight, and water content of the stools while accelerating carmine egestion in the constipated rats. Senna (150 and 300 mg/kg) produced similar effect as the higher doses of EEA but, in addition, induced severe diarrhea.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These findings indicate that EEA has a laxative effect, without causing diarrhea, in a rat model of low-fiber diet-induced constipation. These findings suggest that EEA may be highly effective on constipation as a complementary medicine in humans suffering from life style-induced constipation.</p
Induction of microRNAs, mir-155, mir-222, mir-424 and mir-503, promotes monocytic differentiation through combinatorial regulation
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) involves a block in terminal differentiation of
the myeloid lineage and uncontrolled proliferation of a progenitor state. Using
phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), it is possible to overcome this block in THP-1
cells (an M5-AML containing the MLL-MLLT3 fusion), resulting in differentiation
to an adherent monocytic phenotype. As part of FANTOM4, we used microarrays to
identify 23 microRNAs that are regulated by PMA. We identify four PMA-induced
micro- RNAs (mir-155, mir-222, mir-424 and mir-503) that when overexpressed
cause cell-cycle arrest and partial differentiation and when used in
combination induce additional changes not seen by any individual microRNA. We
further characterize these prodifferentiative microRNAs and show that mir-155
and mir-222 induce G2 arrest and apoptosis, respectively. We find mir-424 and
mir-503 are derived from a polycistronic precursor mir-424-503 that is under
repression by the MLL-MLLT3 leukemogenic fusion. Both of these microRNAs
directly target cell-cycle regulators and induce G1 cell-cycle arrest when
overexpressed in THP-1. We also find that the pro-differentiative mir-424 and
mir-503 downregulate the anti-differentiative mir-9 by targeting a site in its
primary transcript. Our study highlights the combinatorial effects of multiple

The emergence of endothermy in the black-footed and Laysan albatrosses
Eggs with pip-holes of the black-footed ( Diomedea nigripes ) and Laysan ( Diomedea immutabilis ) albatrosses were exposed to various air temperatures in the range 20–35°C in order to detect signs of incipient endothermy in late embryos. No evidence of endothermy was found. In contrast, the O 2 consumption of most hatchlings increased in response to cooling, the O 2 consumption at an air temperature of 25° C exceeding that between 34 and 35°C by 40%. In a minority of hatchlings this response was not seen.
