    The predominant relationship between sexual environment characteristics and HIV-serodiscordant condomless anal sex among HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM)

    In some studies, situational factors have been shown to be stronger predictors of condomless sex than individual risk factors. Cross-sectional relationships between condomless anal sex (CAS) with HIV-serodiscordant partners and risk factors across ecological levels (individual, sexual environment) were examined using a sample (N = 60) of HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) who reported multiple recent episodes of CAS. Negative binomial regressions were used to evaluate the association of contextual risk factors (e.g., substance use during sex, transactional sex, public sex, sex at a sex party) with recent condomless sex, controlling for demographics and mental health. Results demonstrated that sexual environment factors, particularly sex under the influence of drugs or alcohol (B = .019, p < .05), transactional sex (B = .035, p < .01), and public sex (B = .039, p < .01) explained a large proportion of the variance in CAS. Only sex at a sex party was not related to CAS (p = .39). For each additional sexual environment in which men engaged, their rates of CAS increased (B = .39, p < .01). Secondary prevention interventions that are tailored to the proximal sexual environment could be maximally effective, particularly if they address substance use and other challenging sexual situations.We are very grateful to the participants for their time and efforts in the study.     Cognitive behavioral therapy for body image and self-care (CBT-BISC) in sexual minority men living with HIV: a randomized controlled trial

    OBJECTIVE: Body image disturbance is a distressing and interfering problem among many sexual minority men living with HIV, and is associated with elevated depressive symptoms and poor HIV self-care (e.g., antiretroviral therapy [ART] nonadherence). The current study tested the preliminary efficacy of a newly created intervention: cognitive–behavioral therapy for body image and self-care (CBT-BISC) for this population. METHOD: The current study entailed a 2-arm randomized controlled trial (N = 44) comparing CBT-BISC to an enhanced treatment as usual (ETAU) condition. Analyses were conducted at 3 and 6 months after baseline. The primary outcome was body image disturbance (BDD-YBOCS), and secondary outcomes were ART adherence (electronically monitored via Wisepill), depressive symptoms (MADRS), and global functioning (GAF). RESULTS: At 3 months, the CBT-BISC condition showed substantial improvement in BDD-YBOCS (b = −13.6, SE = 2.7, 95% CI [−19.0, −8.3], p < .001; dppc2 = 2.39); MADRS (b = −4.9, SE = 2.8, 95% CI [−10.6, .70], p = .086; dppc2 = .87); ART adherence (b = 8.8, SE = 3.3, 95% CI [2.0, 15.6], p = .01; dppc2 = .94); and GAF (b = 12.3, SE = 3.2, 95% CI [6.1, 18.6], p < .001; dppc2 = 2.91) compared with the ETAU condition. Results were generally maintained, or improved, at 6 months; although, adherence findings were mixed depending on the calculation method. CONCLUSIONS: CBT-BISC shows preliminary efficacy in the integrated treatment of body image disturbance and HIV self-care behaviors among sexual minority men living with HIV.     Brown (2012) asserts that faculty perceptions of Web 2.0 for teaching will influence its adoption. For example, social media’s influence on educational delivery is growing (Hrastinski and Dennon 2012). Zulu et al. (2011) note that business educators are only beginning to understand social networking related to education. We report an exploratory inquiry that confirms the growing evidence that many undergraduate business students do not support the use of Facebook as part of their formal academic relationships. However, an argument is presented that while existing tools for social networking such as Facebook may offer limited pedagogical utility, social networking as a concept none-the-less offers significant potential

    Effect of time at temperature on wild poliovirus titers in stool specimens

    AbstractBackgroundThe effect of transport temperature on the viability of poliovirus in stool specimens from paralyzed cases has not been tested. Quality assurance of programmatic indicators will be necessary in the final phase of polio eradication.ObjectiveTo estimate the effect of time at elevated temperatures on wild poliovirus titers in stool specimens.MethodsWe exposed aliquots of pooled wild poliovirus type 1 specimens to elevated temperatures (27°C, 31°C, and 35°C) for varying time periods up to 14 days. We determined the virus titer of these aliquots and created decay curves at each temperature to estimate the relationship between time at temperature and virus titer.ResultsWe found significantly different slopes of decay at each temperature. The negative slopes increased as the temperature increased.ConclusionsWhile poliovirus in stool remains relatively stable at moderately elevated temperature, transport at higher temperatures could impact sample integrity and virus isolation results

    Effect of Caffeine on Heart Rate and Calories Burned During Exercise

    Four active collegiate level students were asked to participate in a 3 day study, conducted in a strict environment. These students were required to perform the same exact exercise each day at the same time upon waking on an empty stomach following a fasted sleep. All individuals performed the exercise at 7:00 AM. On day one, the participant was to perform the exercise with no caffeine consumption. The following day, the participant was to drink one cup of coffee and perform the required exercise. On the last day of the experiment, each participant drank two cups of coffee before the exercise was performed. The exercise was one mile of walking on a flat treadmill at a speed of 3.5mph. These individuals were wearing a Garmin fitness watch and the heart rate strap that was included in the packaging. Immediately following exercise, these individuals took note of both their heart rate and calories burned. The basis of this study is to show the effects of caffeine on calorie burn and heart rate fluctuation. Following this study, it is important to note that all four participants showed a slight increase in both calories burned and heart rate following the required exercise on each day. The average calories burned with no caffeine was 109.25 and a heart rate of 103 beats per minute. When one cup of coffee was consumed by each individual, the average readings were 118.5 calories burned and a heart rate of 110.25 beats per minute. On the third and final day, the averages were 123.75 calories burned and a heart rate of 120 beats per minute. Thus, proving that caffeine consumption before exercise can help increase heart rate and in return burn more calories. This information can be especially helpful to all individuals trying to lose weight

    Differential rotation in fully convective stars

    Under the assumption of thermal wind balance and effective entropy mixing in constant rotation surfaces, the isorotational contours of the solar convective zone may be reproduced with great fidelity. Even at this early stage of development, this helioseismology fit may be used to put a lower bound on the midlatitude {\em radial} solar entropy gradient, which in good accord with standard mixing length theory. In this paper, we generalize this solar calculation to fully convective stars (and potentially planets), retaining the assumptions of thermal wind balance and effective entropy mixing in isorotational surfaces. It is found that each isorotation contour is of the form R2=A+BΦ(r)R^2 = A+B\Phi(r), where RR is the radius from the rotation axis, Φ(r)\Phi(r) is the (assumed spherical) gravitational potential, and AA and BB are constant along the contour. This result is applied to simple models of fully convective stars. Both solar-like surface rotation profiles (angular velocity decreasing toward the poles) as well as "antisolar" profiles (angular velocity increasing toward the poles) are modeled; the latter bear some suggestive resemblance to numerical simulations. We also perform exploratory studies of zonal surface flows similar to those seen in Jupiter and Saturn. In addition to providing a practical framework for understanding the results of large scale numerical simulations, our findings may also prove useful in dynamical calculations for which a simple but viable model for the background rotation profile in a convecting fluid is needed. Finally, our work bears directly on an important goal of the CoRoT program: to elucidate the internal structure of rotating, convecting stars.Comment: 21 pages, 20 figures.
