    Velocity Profiles in Slowly Sheared Bubble Rafts

    Measurements of average velocity profiles in a bubble raft subjected to slow, steady-shear demonstrate the coexistence between a flowing state and a jammed state similar to that observed for three-dimensional foams and emulsions [Coussot {\it et al,}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 88}, 218301 (2002)]. For sufficiently slow shear, the flow is generated by nonlinear topological rearrangements. We report on the connection between this short-time motion of the bubbles and the long-time averages. We find that velocity profiles for individual rearrangement events fluctuate, but a smooth, average velocity is reached after averaging over only a relatively few events.Comment: typos corrected, figures revised for clarit

    Observational Evidence of Wave Ducting and Evanescence in the Mesosphere

    A collaborative radar and imaging study of gravity waves over the Hawaiian Islands was performed during October 1993 as part of the Airborne Lidar and Observations of Hawaiian Airglow 1993/Coupling and Dynamics of Regions Equatorial (ALOHA-93/CADRE) campaign to investigate the propagation characteristics of short-period (\u3c1 hour) waves at nightglow altitudes. The horizontal wavelengths and apparent phase speeds of quasi-monochromatic wave events were measured in four separate nightglow emissions using data obtained by a high-resolution CCD imager. This information was correlated with simultaneous MF radar wind measurements over the same height interval (∼80–100 km) to infer intrinsic wave parameters in each case. Correlating the two data sets allowed the determination of the local vertical wavenumber for each event, in particular whether it be real (indicative of freely propagating waves) or imaginary (indicative of ducted or evanescent waves). The results of this study indicate a preponderance of ducted or evanescent waves at 80–100 km during the time of the observations, with up to ∼75% of the events recorded exhibiting ducted or evanescent behavior. Also noted was a tendency for ducted behavior to be more prevalent among waves with shorter horizontal wavelengths, in agreement with Doppler ducting theory. These results suggest that ducted waves are relatively common in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere region, at least over the mid-Pacific Ocean. As small-scale waves which are ducted have the potential to travel much longer horizontal distances than freely propagating waves, the frequency of their occurrence should be taken into account in efforts to quantify gravity wave effects at these altitudes

    Histamine stimulates the proliferation of small and large cholangiocytes by activation of both IP3/Ca2+ and cAMP-dependent signaling mechanisms

    Although large cholangiocytes exert their functions by activation of cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP), Ca(2+)-dependent signaling regulates the function of small cholangiocytes. Histamine interacts with four receptors, H1-H4HRs. H1HR acts by Gαq activating IP(3)/Ca(2+), whereas H2HR activates Gα(s) stimulating cAMP. We hypothesize that histamine increases biliary growth by activating H1HR on small and H2HR on large cholangiocytes. The expression of H1-H4HRs was evaluated in liver sections, isolated and cultured (normal rat intrahepatic cholangiocyte culture (NRIC)) cholangiocytes. In vivo, normal rats were treated with histamine or H1-H4HR agonists for 1 week. We evaluated: (1) intrahepatic bile duct mass (IBDM); (2) the effects of histamine, H1HR or H2HR agonists on NRIC proliferation, IP(3) and cAMP levels and PKCα and protein kinase A (PKA) phosphorylation; and (3) PKCα silencing on H1HR-stimulated NRIC proliferation. Small and large cholangiocytes express H1-H4HRs. Histamine and the H1HR agonist increased small IBDM, whereas histamine and the H2HR agonist increased large IBDM. H1HR agonists stimulated IP(3) levels, as well as PKCα phosphorylation and NRIC proliferation, whereas H2HR agonists increased cAMP levels, as well as PKA phosphorylation and NRIC proliferation. The H1HR agonist did not increase proliferation in PKCα siRNA-transfected NRICs. The activation of differential signaling mechanisms targeting small and large cholangiocytes is important for repopulation of the biliary epithelium during pathologies affecting different-sized bile ducts

    Inclusive Chemical Characterization of Tourmaline: Mossbauer Study of Fe Valence and Site Occupancy

    We report here the results of a series of inclusive chemical characterizations, including all elements except oxygen, for a suite of 54 tourmaline samples. A combination of analytical techniques was used to analyze for major and light elements (electron microprobe), Fe3+ and Fe2+ (Mossbauer spectroscopy), H (U extraction), and B, Li, and F (ion microprobe, or SIMS). The B content of the tourmalines studied ranges from 2.86 to 3.26 B per formula unit (pfu) with 31 anions; excess boron is believed to reside in the Si site. Li ranges from 0.0 to 1.44 Li pfu and F contents are 0.0-0.91 pfu. H contents range from nearly anhydrous up to 3.76 H pfu and do not correlate simply with Fe3+ content. Mossbauer results show that tourmaline exhibits the entire range of Fe3+/Sigma Fe from 0.0-1.0. Fe2+ is represented in the spectra by three doublets, with occupancy in at least three distinct types of Y sites (with different types of nearest and next nearest neighbors). Fe3+ was found in 26 of the 54 samples studied. Although Mossbauer data do not allow the distinction between Fe-[Y](3+) and Fe-[Z](3+) site occupancies to be made, XRD data on these samples suggest that the majority of Fe3+ is also in Y. Of the samples studied, Fe-[4](3+) occurs in nine; five of those were either olenite or uvite with extensive Na substitution. A mixed valence doublet corresponding to delocalized electrons shared between adjacent octahedra was observed in 14 of the samples studied. Projection pursuit regression analysis shows that distribution of Fe among doublets is a function (albeit a complex one) of bulk composition of the tourmaline and supports the interpretation of doublets representing different populations of neighbors. Variations in Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio cannot be directly related to variations in charge in any single site of the structure. Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio is probably controlled by the prevailing oxidation state in the bull; rock assemblage, rather than by any particular crystal chemical substitution

    Localising and identifying radionuclides via energy-resolved angular photon responses

    A technique for the in-situ localisation of radioactivity is described whereby the energy-resolved angular photon response of a collimated inorganic scintillation detector is used to derive the spatial arrangement of a variety of radioactive source configurations. The influence of photon radiation (X- and γ ray) incident on the collimated detector is expressed mathematically, by way of a sinc transform embedded to a dynamic linear regression model, to increase the spatial accuracy of the localisation. This approach is tested experimentally with two pairs of like radionuclides, two pairs of different combinations of radionuclides and three different radionuclides to demonstrate its combined isotopic discrimination and spatial localisation capabilities. A fit based on the model referred to above is observed to reproduce the data for the combined X- and γ-ray regions of interest effectively. This allows for increased resolution via interpolation between the data which is observed to improve location accuracy significantly. This research is relevant to applications in autonomous robotic exploration tasks and for the characterisation of contaminated environments associated with nuclear legacies and radiological emergencies.<br/

    Triacylglycerol synthesis by PDAT1 in the absence of DGAT1 activity is dependent on re-acylation of LPC by LPCAT2

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The <it>Arabidopsis thaliana dgat1 </it>mutant, <it>AS11</it>, has an oil content which is decreased by 30%, and a strongly increased ratio of 18:3/20:1, compared to wild type. Despite lacking a functional DGAT1, <it>AS11 </it>still manages to make 70% of WT seed oil levels. Recently, it was demonstrated that in the absence of <it>DGAT1</it>, <it>PDAT1 </it>was essential for normal seed development, and is a dominant determinant in <it>Arabidopsis </it>TAG biosynthesis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Biochemical, metabolic and gene expression studies combined with genetic crossing of selected <it>Arabidopsis </it>mutants have been carried out to demonstrate the contribution of <it>Arabidopsis </it>PDAT1 and LPCAT2 in the absence of DGAT1 activity.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Through microarray and RT-PCR gene expression analyses of <it>AS11 </it>vs. WT mid-developing siliques, we observed consistent trends between the two methods. <it>FAD2 </it>and <it>FAD3 </it>were up-regulated and <it>FAE1 </it>down-regulated, consistent with the <it>AS11 </it>acyl phenotype. <it>PDAT1 </it>expression was up-regulated by <it>ca </it>65% while <it>PDAT2 </it>expression was up-regulated only 15%, reinforcing the dominant role of <it>PDAT1 </it>in <it>AS11 </it>TAG biosynthesis. The expression of <it>LPCAT2 </it>was up-regulated by 50-75%, while <it>LPCAT1 </it>expression was not significantly affected. <it>In vitro </it>LPCAT activity was enhanced by 75-125% in microsomal protein preparations from mid-developing <it>AS11 </it>seed <it>vs </it>WT. Co-incident homozygous knockout lines of <it>dgat1</it>/<it>lpcat2 </it>exhibited severe penalties on TAG biosynthesis, delayed plant development and seed set, even with a functional PDAT1; the double mutant <it>dgat1/lpcat1 </it>showed only marginally lower oil content than <it>AS11</it>.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Collectively, the data strongly support that in <it>AS11 </it>it is <it>LPCAT2 </it>up-regulation which is primarily responsible for assisting in PDAT1-catalyzed TAG biosynthesis, maintaining a supply of PC as co-substrate to transfer <it>sn</it>-2 moieties to the <it>sn</it>-3 position of the enlarged <it>AS11 </it>DAG pool.</p

    Creativity and the computer nerd: an exploration of attitudes

    This study arises from our concern that many of our best art and design students are failing to make the most of the opportunities provided by IT because of their fear or dislike of computers. This not only deprives them of useful skills, but, even more importantly, deprives many IT based developments of their input. In this paper we investigate the relationship between attitudes to creativity and to computers among students. We quickly discard an approach based on theories of personality types as philosophically and educationally problematic. An approach based on the self-concept of artists and designers, in relation to their own creativity and to their feelings about computers, offers more hope of progress. This means that we do not try to define the attributes of "creative people". Rather, we ask what creativity means to students of art and design and relate these responses to their attitudes to computers. Self-concept depends on how the subjects see themselves within society and culture, and is liable to change as culture changes. One major instrument of cultural change at the present time is the growth of IT itself. We then describe a first attempt at using a psychological method - Kelly's Repertory Grids - to investigate the self-concept of artists and designers. It is hoped to continue with this approach in further studies over the next few years

    Comparative efficacy, cognitive effects and acceptability of electroconvulsive therapies for the treatment of depression: Protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis

    Introduction There have been important advances in the use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) to treat major depressive episodes. These include variations to the type of stimulus the brain regions stimulated, and the stimulus parameters (eg, stimulus duration/pulse width). Our aim is to investigate ECT types using a network meta-analysis (NMA) approach and report on comparative treatment efficacy, cognitive side effects and acceptability. Method We will conduct a systematic review to identify randomised controlled trials that compared two or more ECT protocols to treat depression. This will be done using the following databases: Embase, MEDLINE PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, Cochrane CENTRAL and will be supplemented by personal contacts with researchers in the field. All authors will be contacted to provide missing information. Primary outcomes will be symptom severity on a validated continuous clinician-rated scale of depression, cognitive functioning measured using anterograde verbal recall, and acceptability calculated using all-cause drop-outs. Secondary outcomes will include response and remission rates, autobiographical memory following a course of ECT, and anterograde visuospatial recall. Bayesian random effects hierarchical models will compare ECT types. Additional meta-regressions may be conducted to determine the impact of effect modifiers and patient-specific prognostic factors if sufficient data are available. Discussion This NMA will facilitate clinician decision making and allow more sophisticated selection of ECT type according to the balance of efficacy, cognitive side effects and acceptability. Ethics This systematic review and NMA does not require research ethics approval as it will use published aggregate data and will not collect nor disclose individually identifiable participant data.
