Aeroelastic simulations of stores in weapon bays using Detached-Eddy simulation
Detached-Eddy Simulations of flows in weapon bays with a generic store at different positions in the cavity and with flexible fins are presented in this paper. Simulations were carried out to better understand the fluid–structure interactions of the unsteady, turbulent flow and the store. Mach and Reynolds numbers (based on the missile diameter) were 0.85 and 326.000 respectively. Spectral analysis showed few differences in the frequency content in the cavity between the store with rigid and flexible fins. However, a large effect of the store position was seen. When the store was placed inside the cavity, the noise reduction reached 7 dB close to the cavity ceiling. The closer the store to the carriage position, the more coherent and quieter was the cavity. To perform a more realistic simulation, a gap of 0.3% of the store diameter was introduced between the fin root and the body of the store. Store loads showed little differences between the rigid and flexible fins when the store was inside and outside the cavity. With the store at the shear layer, the flexible fins were seen to have a reduction in loads with large fluctuations in position about a mean. Fin-tip displacements of the store inside the cavity were of the range of 0.2% of the store diameter, and in the range of 1–2% of store diameter when at the shear layer
2W/nm Peak-power All-Fiber Supercontinuum Source and its Application to the Characterization of Periodically Poled Nonlinear Crystals
We demonstrate a uniform high spectral brightness and peak power density
all-fiber supercontinuum source. The source consists of a nanosecond Ytterbium
fiber laser and an optimal length PCF producing a continuum with a peak power
density of 2 W/nm and less than 5 dB of spectral variation between 590 to 1500
nm. The Watt level per nm peak power density enables the use of such sources
for the characterization of nonlinear materials. Application of the source is
demonstrated with the characterization of several periodically poled crystals.Comment: 8 pages 4 figures v2 includes revisions to the description of the

Vacuum polarization of a scalar field in wormhole spacetimes
An analitical approximation of for a scalar field in a static
spherically symmetric wormhole spacetime is obtained. The scalar field is
assumed to be both massive and massless, with an arbitrary coupling to
the scalar curvature, and in a zero temperature vacuum state.Comment: 10 pages, RevTeX, two eps figure
Optimum Placement of Post-1PN GW Chirp Templates Made Simple at any Match Level via Tanaka-Tagoshi Coordinates
A simple recipe is given for constructing a maximally sparse regular lattice
of spin-free post-1PN gravitational wave chirp templates subject to a given
minimal match constraint, using Tanaka-Tagoshi coordinates.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
Subgap conductivity in SIN-junctions of high barrier transparency
We investigate the current-voltage characteristics of high-transparency
superconductor-insulator-normal metal (SIN) junctions with the specific tunnel
resistance below 30 kOhm per square micron. The junctions were fabricated from
different superconducting and normal conducting materials, including Nb, Al,
AuPd and Cu. The subgap leakage currents were found to be appreciably larger
than those given by the standard tunnelling model. We explain our results using
the model of two-electron tunnelling in the coherent diffusive transport
regime. We demonstrate that even in the high-transparency SIN-junctions, a
noticeable reduction of the subgap current can be achieved by splitting a
junction into several submicron sub-junctions. These structures can be used as
nonlinear low-noise shunts in Rapid-Single-Flux-Quantum (RSFQ) circuitry for
controlling Josephson qubits.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl
First-principles Calculation of the Formation Energy in MgO-CaO Solid Solutions
The electronic structure and total energy were calculated for ordered and
disordered MgO-CaO solid solutions within the multiple scattering theory in
real space and the local density approximation. Based on the dependence of the
total energy on the unit cell volume the equilibrium lattice parameter and
formation energy were determined for different solution compositions. The
formation energy of the solid solutions is found to be positive that is in
agreement with the experimental phase diagram, which shows a miscibility gap.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

Searching for Gravitational Waves from the Inspiral of Precessing Binary Systems: Astrophysical Expectations and Detection Efficiency of "Spiky'' Templates
Relativistic spin-orbit and spin-spin couplings has been shown to modify the
gravitational waveforms expected from inspiraling binaries with a black hole
and a neutron star. As a result inspiral signals may be missed due to
significant losses in signal-to-noise ratio, if precession effects are ignored
in gravitational-wave searches. We examine the sensitivity of the anticipated
loss of signal-to-noise ratio on two factors: the accuracy of the precessing
waveforms adopted as the true signals and the expected distributions of
spin-orbit tilt angles, given the current understanding of their physical
origin. We find that the results obtained using signals generated by
approximate techniques are in good agreement with the ones obtained by
integrating the 2PN equations. This shows that a complete account of all
high-order post-Newtonian effects is usually not necessary for the
determination of detection efficiencies. Based on our current astrophysical
expectations, large tilt angles are not favored and as a result the decrease in
detection rate varies rather slowly with respect to the black hole spin
magnitude and is within 20--30% of the maximum possible values.Comment: 7 fig., accepted by Phys. Rev. D Minor modification
Using graph-kernels to represent semantic information in text classification
Most text classification systems use bag-of-words represen- tation of documents to find the classification target function. Linguistic structures such as morphology, syntax and semantic are completely ne- glected in the learning process.
This paper proposes a new document representation that, while includ- ing its context independent sentence meaning, is able to be used by a structured kernel function, namely the direct product kernel. The proposal is evaluated using a dataset of articles from a Portuguese daily newspaper and classifiers are built using the SVM algorithm. The results show that this structured representation, while only partially de- scribing document’s significance has the same discriminative power over classes as the traditional bag-of-words approach
Possible wormholes in a brane world
The condition R=0, where R is the four-dimensional scalar curvature, is used
for obtaining a large class (with an arbitrary function of r) of static,
spherically symmetric Lorentzian wormhole metrics. The wormholes are globally
regular and traversable, can have throats of arbitrary size and can be both
symmetric and asymmetric. These metrics may be treated as possible wormhole
solutions in a brane world since they satisfy the vacuum Einstein equations on
the brane where effective stress-energy is induced by interaction with the bulk
gravitational field. Some particular examples are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, revtex4. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
