THE VOLUNTARY ARBITRATION OF LABOR DISPUTES

    Get PDF
Diverse conceptions about the relationship between collective bargaining and arbitration are at the root of some important current problems about the use of voluntary arbitration to resolve labor disputes. Should voluntary arbitration be considered, in any degree, as an extension of collective bargaining, or should it be basically conceived as an alternative to collective bargaining? In other words, does any part of the criterion of mutual acceptability-the very essence of collective bargaining-carry over when arbitration is invoked, or does arbitration connote a process through which employment terms are imposed upon the parties without any regard to the acceptability factor. There is the nub of the most important current labor arbitration question. Nor can it be effectively dealt with as a problem of semantics and by simply defining arbitration as a process which excludes the mutual acceptability factor. That merely evades the difficult part of the question

    Carbon Dioxide Reduction Systems

The Methoxy system for regenerating oxygen from carbon dioxide was studied. Experiments indicate that the reaction between carbon dioxide and hydrogen can be carried out with ease in an efficient manner and with excellent heat conservation. A small reactor capable of handling the C02 expired by three men has been built and operated. The decomposition of methane by therma1,arc and catalytic processes was studied. Both the arc and catalytic processes gave encouraging results with over 90 percent of the methane being decomposed to carbon and hydrogen in some of the catalytic processes. Control of the carbon deposition in both the catalytic and arc processes is of great importance to prevent catalyst deactivation and short circuiting of electrical equipment. Sensitive analytical techniques have been developed for all of the components present in the reactor effluent streams

Electrical microfluidic pressure gauge for elastomer microelectromechanical systems

    Get PDF
We report on an electrical microfluidic pressure gauge. A polydimethylsiloxane microvalve closes at a characteristic applied pressure determined by the material's properties and the valve's dimensions. Hence, when the same pressure is applied to all valves of a heterogeneous valve array, some valves close while others remain open. The state of the array is combined with knowledge of the respective characteristic closing pressures of the individual valves to yield an estimate of the applied pressure. The state of each valve is obtained by electrical measurements, since the electrical resistance of the respective underlying fluid-filled channel increases by at least two orders of magnitude as the valve closes and its insulating elastomer material interrupts the electrical circuit. The overall system functions as a pressure gauge with electrical readout. This device would be a critical component in active pressure-regulation loops in future integrated microfluidic systems

Mouthpart Morphology and Feeding Strategies of the Commensal Amphipod, Anamixis hanseni Stebbing

    Get PDF
The lack of the information on the biology of the commensal amphipod family Anamixidae prompted investigations into mouthpart ultrastructure, feeding biology, and host specificity of Anamixis hanseni Stebbing, 1897. Earlier investigators presented conflicting reports on the structural composition of the buccal region and feeding modes in anamixids. Scanning electron microscope analysis of A. hanseni showed a complete set of mouthparts to be present, although much modified and reduced, except for the well-developed maxilliped palps. Feeding is not parasitic (piercing and sucking host tissue) as previously believed but is accomplished while A. hanseni rests inside its host. Minute food particles are trapped on a filter net of setal tufts located on the medial carpal lobes of the enlarged second gnathopods. Both pairs of antennae and maxilliped palps are employed in maneuvering the food mass to the mouth. Mucus secretions by the host may aid in agglutination of food particles and could itself be a food source.Findings show that A. hanseni is a highly specialized commensal with closest affinities to the genus Leucothoidesof the Leucothoidae. A. hanseni inhabits compound tunicates and small solitary calcareous sponges
