Projectile insets and backed pieces from the Upper Magdalenian of La Madeleine (Tursac, Dordogne, France), new data from lithic technology

The technological and morphological reviewing of the backed bladelets and lithic points from the Peyrony and Bouvier series led us to question the status and role of these particular objects in the hunting equipment of the last Magdalenian people.Firstly, from a technological view point, a great flexibility in the production schemes characterizes the conception of backed bladelets as the methods of debitage and transformation of blanks into backed pieces vary but follow the same strict criteria as to their aim.Bladelet debitage at La Madeleine clearly aims at the production of tapered blanks, a complementary retouch adjusting the outline of the objects if necessary (edge, proximal or distal extremities). In some cases, this complementary retouch clearly modifies the blank morphology and could then take part in the making of particular types of backed bladelets. The schemes of retouch of these objects evolve progressively but clearly during the occupation of the shelter. The evolution of the lithic insets retouch schemes is clearly more effective during the Magdalenian V and VI, when first curved-backed points, then shouldered points are made, and harpoon technology develops in antler working, emphasizing the evolution in the conception of the hunting equipment. This evolution could be the result of a change in status of previous conceptions of projectile points, which no longer represent the only technical options. The greater care taken in the shaping of some bladelets could come within the intent of better defining the role of the hunting equipment existing before the introduction of new projectile points. Their evolution could then be part of a global modification of Magdalenian hunting equipment and capture techniques

    SOCIAL CHANGE THROUGH SOCIAL MOVEMENTS

poster abstractThrough studying the interworkings of social movements and how they alter the perceptions of the mainstream society this study looks to investigate how social movements create social change. This study explores four different social movements spanning multiple decades to see what elements amongst all of them are consistent and what elements differ. The four social movements chosen are: the Civil Rights Movement, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) Movement, the Hip-Hop Movement and the Marijuana Legalization Movement. These four movements are used as a general basis to represent not only the similarities and differences of social movements, but also to represent the struggle that all social movements face to gain acceptance socially, culturally, and politically in the mainstream. The study also looks to examine how movements use tools, specifically media, to gain momentum and become more widespread throughout the populations. The media that I look at as wielded by social movements to display their message range from radio and newspapers to more modern devices of media such as television and internet. I look forward to advancing my research on social change and the catalysts that enable it and hope to compound on my research especially the power of media aspect and investigate psychological implications of media for social change

Duterte and Alliance Behavior of the Philippines

    Get PDF
Many have defined the Philippines' dominant alliance behavior to be hedging; that is, an alignment choice adapted to address the security challenges often faced by small and middle powers in relation to major powers. Hedging should be understood as a strategy to manage the security risks that small and middle powers face, whereas balancing and bandwagoning are security strategies created in response to security threats. This paper argues that before President Duterte's election in 2016, it could be argued that the Philippines was engaging in hedging or low intensity balancing between the U.S. and China. However, Philippine foreign policy underwent a swift about-face as a result of Duterte's objectives, and as a result the country began bandwagoning with China.&nbsp

Ipseity Vol. 1: An Artful Exploration of Identity Formation in Emerging Adulthood

    Get PDF
Ipseity is a multi-edition coffee-table style book that integrates digital and print design and incorporates handmade elements and processes such as die-cuts, letterpress printing, gold foiling, hand-sewn bindings, and embroidery. Its design is rooted in minimalism, yet the handmade aspects, eye-catching color palette, and bold illustrations make reading Ipseity a visual and tactile experience. The design utilizes typography and flat-color illustrations in a consistent layout, with a strong emphasis on the handmade elements and craftsmanship throughout the book. It is not only a publication to read and ponder, but it is an artful object with a physical presence to be visually appreciated and analyzed. Ipseity’s content examines young adults’ relationship with their own concepts of identity and the things that might influence who we are, such as; faith, relationships, sense of place, others’ perceptions of us, our families, goals, and experiences. It is the exploration of defining selfhood in the midst of beginning adulthood. This collective experience is expressed through the eyes of many of my peers, who were gracious enough to contribute personal reflections on their own experiences with defining their identity in the form of creative writings and poetry. At the end of the book, I have provided a way for viewers to contribute to the project and to invite conversation about personal identity among my audience. There is a QR code, a type of barcode that can be scanned with a smartphone camera, that links to a website where viewers can answer questions about what has influenced their own identity and the different ways in which they define themselves. Through the visual and tactile experience of viewing this book that explores identity, I hope to inspire self-reflection and contemplation in each person that views my work. I want the design of this book to speak louder than the words within it so that the viewer is not only able to connect to the content, but to the project as a whole as it engages and provokes their senses. Through the book’s relatable content and tangible, handmade elements, I hope to create a welcoming, interactive, and collaborative experience that encourages exploration of the things that make us who we are

Benefits of an Intergenerational Program on the Health and Wellbeing of Older Adults in a Day Treatment Program

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to describe how a 5-week shared-site intergenerational program increases wellbeing in older adults. Implementation of the research took place once a week at Generations Crossing in Harrisonburg, VA. Generations Crossing is a combined adult day center and a preschool. For five weeks, participants were presented with an activity that had the main goal of promoting social interactions between the older adults and the children. Data collectors used the Intergenerational Observation Scale (IOS) to record five older adults. The IOS determined how well intergenerational programming supported social interaction and positive affects between the two generations. Each week, the adult staff members were given a survey inquiring if they noticed any differences in their assigned adult\u27s behavior or affect. Two additional questions were given at the end of the program to record any long-term changes
