    A Consideration for School Safety and Risk Management : Effectiveness and Issues of Joint Training for Teachers from Different School Species

    Purpose of the Study: The authors consider the effectiveness and the issues of joint training for teachers from different school species through the case studies of the teaching license renewal course in Okinawa. Design and Methods: The teachers were grouped into eight groups of three to six members based on school species and discussed the two case studies and a representative of each group gave presentation. They also wrote their experiences on school safety and the risk management in their schools they work. Results: Teachers' responds and preventions to heat strokes of students during extracurricular activities are categorized into several classification based on school species. Teachers' behavior to secure safety at schools are categorized into 5 such as safety check, security guidance, information sharing among teachers, and so on. However, the number of answers and the types of classifications are different based on school species. Teachers attended evaluated the joint training as useful and meaningful because they studied many different ideas. Implications: The school safety and the risk management are essential training for teachers to give their students chances to enjoy school life and teachers should pay much more attention to school safety. To secure students' safety, the joint training is useful to get many different ideas

    Current Status and Issues of Disaster and Prevention in Public High Schools : Tsunami Protection Measures of High Schools in Okinawa

    Purpose of the Study: The authors report the result of the status guo and the issues of disaster and the prevention in public high schools in Okinawa. Design and Methods: The authors carried out the survey by mail about the status guo and the issues of disaster and the prevention to 60 prefectural high school principals in Okinawa. Respondents (N=55) completed the survey that included questions about the above the sea level, the types of the programs on Tsunami protection measures, and the status guo, the issues of their high schools. Results: Eleven high schools (20%) were 5 meters or below above the sea level and 16 schools (29.1%) were 10 meters or below above the sea level. Thirty-three high schools have done the tsunami drills, and the types of programs were mainly categorized into four: the drills with students and teaching staff, the drills with schools and communities, the tabletop exercises, the drills only students wearing their clothes. Issues were categorized into three: beyond thinking about tsunami disaster in Okinawa, difficulty to have time for Tsunami protection drills, and no written materials for drills. Implications: Tsunami disaster is unexpected for many principals. However, there are many earthquakes around Okinawa and the disaster will come without notice or in a short time. Therefore, schools in Okinawa should prepare for Tsunami disaster and conduct the drills for Tsunami as soon as possible to save students’ lives
