Effects of nucleus initialization on event-by-event observables
In this work we present a study of the influence of nucleus initializations
on the event-by-event elliptic flow coefficient, . In most Monte-Carlo
models, the initial positions of the nucleons in a nucleus are completely
uncorrelated, which can lead to very high density regions. In a simple, yet
more realistic model where overlapping of the nucleons is avoided, fluctuations
in the initial conditions are reduced. However, distributions are not

Starbursts and black hole masses in X-shaped radio galaxies: Signatures of a merger event?
We present new spectroscopic identifications of 12 X-shaped radio galaxies
and use the spectral data to derive starburst histories and masses of the
nuclear supermassive black holes in these galaxies. The observations were done
with the 2.1-m telescope of the Observatorio Astron\'omico Nacional at San
Pedro M\'artir, M\'exico. The new spectroscopic results extend the sample of
X-shaped radio galaxies studied with optical spectroscopy. We show that the
combined sample of the X-shaped radio galaxies has statistically higher
black-hole masses and older episodes of star formation than a control sample of
canonical double-lobed radio sources with similar redshifts and luminosities.
The data reveal enhanced star-formation activity in the X-shaped sample on the
timescales expected in galactic mergers. We discuss the results obtained in the

Topological defects in lattice models and affine Temperley-Lieb algebra
This paper is the first in a series where we attempt to define defects in
critical lattice models that give rise to conformal field theory topological
defects in the continuum limit. We focus mostly on models based on the
Temperley-Lieb algebra, with future applications to restricted solid-on-solid
(also called anyonic chains) models, as well as non-unitary models like
percolation or self-avoiding walks. Our approach is essentially algebraic and
focusses on the defects from two points of view: the "crossed channel" where
the defect is seen as an operator acting on the Hilbert space of the models,
and the "direct channel" where it corresponds to a modification of the basic
Hamiltonian with some sort of impurity. Algebraic characterizations and
constructions are proposed in both points of view. In the crossed channel, this
leads us to new results about the center of the affine Temperley-Lieb algebra;
in particular we find there a special subalgebra with non-negative integer
structure constants that are interpreted as fusion rules of defects. In the
direct channel, meanwhile, this leads to the introduction of fusion products
and fusion quotients, with interesting mathematical properties that allow to
describe representations content of the lattice model with a defect, and to
describe its spectrum.Comment: 41
The effect of polydispersity on the ordering transition of adsorbed self-assembled rigid rods
Extensive Monte Carlo simulations were carried out to investigate the nature
of the ordering transition of a model of adsorbed self-assembled rigid rods on
the bonds of a square lattice [Tavares et. al., Phys. Rev E 79, 021505 (2009)].
The polydisperse rods undergo a continuous ordering transition that is found to
be in the two-dimensional Ising universality class, as in models where the rods
are monodisperse. This finding is in sharp contrast with the recent claim that
equilibrium polydispersity changes the nature of the phase transition in this
class of models [L`opez et. al., Phys. Rev E 80, 040105(R)(2009)].Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure
Advanced Control Facility for the CERN-UNICOS Framework
CERN, during last decade, has extensively applied the CERN/UNICOS framework to large scale cryoplant control system. An increase of interested to advanced control techniques and innovative simulation environment applied to cryogenic processes has also occur. Since new control algorithm development into UNICOS framework requires significant time, a control testing platform which can be externally connected can improve and simplify the procedure of testing advanced controllers implementation. In this context, the present paper describes the development of a control testing tool at CERN, which allows rapid control strategies implementation through the Matlab/Simulink® environment, coupled with the large scale cryogenics UNICOS control system or with the CERN PROCOS simulation environment. The time delays which are inherently introduced by network links and communication protocols are analyzed and experimentally identified. Security and reliability issues are also discussed
Influência da sazonalidade na infestação de Ergasilus turucuyus (Copepoda: Ergasilidae) em Acestrorhynchus falcirostris e Hemiodus unimaculatus (Osteichthyes: Characiformes) do Reservatório Coaracy Nunes, estado do Amapá, Brasil.
O presente estudo investigou a influência da sazonalidade na infestação de Ergasilus turucuyus nas espécies de peixe Acestrorhynchus falcirostris e Hemiodus unimaculatus do Reservatório Coaracy Nunes, Estado do Amapá, Norte do Brasil. Foram coletados 118 espécimes de hospedeiros, sendo 62 A. falcirostris e 56 H. unimaculatus nos períodos de estiagem (outubro de 2012 a fevereiro de 2013) e chuvoso (abril a agosto de 2013) As características físicas e químicas da água foram similares no período chuvoso e de estiagem. Apesar das diferenças nos níveis de precipitação pluviométrica entre períodos sazonais, os níveis de infestação por E. turucuyus foram similares durante a estação chuvosa e estiagem. Não houve infestação por ergasilídeos em H. unimaculatus no período chuvoso. A infestação branquial por E. turucuyus não influenciou o fator de condição de ambos os hospedeiros, independente do período sazonal. Este foi o primeiro estudo sobre sazonalidade de infestação por E. turucuyus
First study on infestation of Excorallana berbicensis (Isopoda: Corallanidae) on six fishes in a reservoir in Brazilian Amazon during dry and rainy seasons.
We analyzed the infestation levels of Excorallana berbicensis on Acestrorhynchus falcirostris, Ageneiosus ucayalensis, Geophagus proximus, Hemiodus unimaculatus, Psectrogaster falcata and Serrasalmus gibbus in a reservoir in the Araguari River basin, northern Brazil, during the dry and rainy seasons. For P. falcata, the infestation levels due to E. berbicensis were greater during the rainy season. For all the species studied, the peak parasite prevalence was in the month of highest rainfall levels and there were two peaks of parasite abundance: one in the month with highest rainfall level and the other in the month of transition from the rainy season to the dry season. In these hosts, around 70% of the E. berbicensis specimens were collected during the rainy season. The body conditions of the hosts also did not suffer any seasonal influence. Despite the differences in seasonal rainfall levels, there was no fluctuation in transparency, turbidity, pH, electric conductivity, temperature and dissolved oxygen levels in the water, due to the stability of these parameters during the seasonal cycle investigated in this artificial Amazon ecosystem. Tunneling effects on impurity spectral function in coupled asymmetric quantum wires
The impurity spectral function is studied in coupled double quantum wires at
finite temperatures. Simple anisotropy in the confinement direction of the
wires leads to finite non-diagonal elements of the impurity spectral function
matrix. These non-diagonal elements are responsible for tunneling effects and
result in pronounced extra peak in the impurity spectral function up to
temperatures as high as 20 K.Comment: Accepted in Phys. Rev.
Structural and insulator-to-metal phase transition at 50 GPa in GdMnO3
We present a study of the effect of very high pressure on the orthorhombic
perovskite GdMnO3 by Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron x-ray diffraction up to
53.2 GPa. The experimental results yield a structural and insulator-to-metal
phase transition close to 50 GPa, from an orthorhombic to a metrically cubic
structure. The phase transition is of first order with a pressure hysteresis of
about 6 GPa. The observed behavior under very high pressure might well be a
