(Board)ing Schools: Rudyard Kipling’s young heroes

    Get PDF
Rudyard Kipling’s young male characters, namely Stalky (Stalky & Co. ) and Harvey Cheyne Junior (Captains Courageous), whom he portrays with noticeable admiration, exhibit, on the one hand, circumspection, stoicism, leadership, and stalkiness, on the other hand, the absence of scruples in manipulating those acting in loco parentis to achieve their desired ends. This article aims to examine how these characters can shed light on one another, allowing for a better comprehension of them both. Furthermore, it will explore how the religious archetype of the trinity permeates Stalky & Co.’s composition of characters, and how muscular Christianity shapes Captains Courageous. Stalky and Harvey thrive in a masculine world, access to which requires leaving women behind, substituting them with brotherhoods or identification with the father. The perfect man, Kipling postulates, is the resourceful and courageous rule-bending Christian who is able to keep women and natives in a state of obedience.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Sourcing Patterns of Foreign-owned Multinational Subsidiaries in Europe

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the determinants of the international input sourcing propensities of foreign-owned multinational subsidiaries in four EU host countries. Major findings concern the impact of subsidiary roles and economic integration on international sourcing patterns. Regional and global integration are leading to a greater import-orientation among MNE subsidiaries, including Product Mandate firms which are assumed to be strongly embedded within host economies. The results cast serious doubts on the effectiveness of traditional criteria for investment attraction; and confirm that stimulating local sourcing is problematic. Specific policy implications are developed relating to the attraction of inward foreign direct investment and to corporate development policies.Multinational enterprises,Subsidiaries, Sourcing, Europe.

Sorption studies of diethylketone in the presence of Al3+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and Mn2+, from lab-scale to pilot scale

    Get PDF
The toxic effects of diethylketone (DEK) in aqueous solution with different concentrations of Al3+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and Mn2+ were evaluated at lab-scale. It was established that Streptococcus equisimilis is able to efficiently remove DEK with different concentrations with heavy metals. It was proved that this joint-system has excellent capacity to biodegrade high concentrations of DEK in the presence of Al3+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and Mn2+. With the exception of Al3+, the uptake for all metals increased as the initial concentration of each metal in the mixed solution increased. The breakthrough curves are best described by the Adams and Bohart model for Cd2+, by the Yoon and Nelson model for Ni2+ and by the Wolborska model for Mn2+.This study was supported by the Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia under the scope of the strategic funding of UID/BIO/04469/2013 unit and COMPETE 2020 (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006684) and BioTecNorte operation (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000004) funded by European Regional Development Fund under the scope of Norte2020 – Programa Operacional Regional do Norte. Mitos y preconceptos sobre el consumo de alcohol: Influencia de un programa de capacitación

    Get PDF

A study with students in the Lower Alentejo sub-region (Portugal). Alcohol consumption is associated with numerous harmful consequences for health, as well as broad sequelae for society. According OECD data, Portugal was, in 2014, the 15th largest consumer in the European Union. For the alcohol consumption concurences beliefs, myths and preconceptions about their effects. This a mixed nature study, observational, transversal and analytical research-action. The objective was to identify a set of myths about alcohol consumption among the student population of basic and secondary education. It was carried out in schools in the Bajo Alentejo sub-region (Portugal), where data from the National Health Survey 2005-2006 indicate to a growth in the prevalence of alcohol users. A questionnaire was applied, obtaining 501 valid answers from students at the end of basic education and secondary education. The results reveal that many myths about alcohol consumption continue to be present among students, and there is a need to define and implement an intervention plan to prevent the consumption of alcoholic beverages, which makes it possible to clarify the students about the myths, since they are inducers of consumption by misconceptions

Effect of ph on the removal of fluoxetine from aqueous solutions by granular activated carbon

    Get PDF
The widespread use of pharmaceuticals in human and veterinary medicine has led to the continuous release of these micropollutants and their metabolites into environmental matrices. The aim of this work is to assess the sorption capacity of activated carbon and to evaluate the effect of the solution pH on the removal of fluoxetine from dilute solutions (5 mg/L). Kinetic assays were performed in batch experiments at different pH values, from 2 to 9. The pH of zero point of charge, pHzpc, obtained for activated carbon was 8.3. The results revealed that the solution pH strongly influences the electrostatic interactions between the net surface charge of the adsorbent and the electric charge of fluoxetine molecules. The adsorption of fluoxetine onto activated carbon was therefore dependent on the solution pH, being the maximum uptake attained at pH 9 (q = 48.5 mg/g).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Biosorption of Multicomponent Solutions: A State of the Art of the Understudy Case

    Get PDF
Although there has been an intense study and exploitation of research regarding biosorption processes, the lack of coherent and similar methodologies, essential to the elaboration of any consequential and universal conclusion, associated with the lack of biosorption studies conducted at a pilot and industrial scale, with multicomponent solutions or real effluents, as well as the lack of information regarding the pollutant interactions makes the implementation and commercialization of biosorption technology very complicated. This chapter summarizes the existing knowledge and the experimental work conducted at a pilot scale or industrial scale with multicomponent solutions and critically reviews aspects related to biosorption research regarding the advantages, the disadvantages, the rationale, the scope and scientific value of biosorption processes and the obstacles to commercial success

Cerberus is a feedback inhibitor of Nodal asymmetric signaling in the chick embryo

    Get PDF
The TGF-beta-related molecule Nodal plays an essential and conserved role in left-right patterning of the vertebrate embryo. Previous reports have shown that the zebrafish and mouse Cerberus-related proteins Charon and Cerberus-like-2 (Cerl-2), respectively, act in the node region to prevent the Nodal signal from crossing to the right side, whereas chick Cerberus (cCer) has an unclear function in the left-side mesoderm. In this study, we investigate the transcriptional regulation and function of cCer in left-right development. By analyzing the enhancer activity of cCer 5' genomic sequences in electroporated chick embryos, we identified a cCer left-side enhancer that contains two FoxH1 and one SMAD binding site. We show that these Nodal-responsive elements are necessary and sufficient for the activation of transcription in the left-side mesoderm. In transgenic mouse embryos, cCer regulatory sequences behave as in chick embryos, suggesting that the cis-regulatory sequences of Cerberus-related genes have diverged during vertebrate evolution. Moreover, our findings from cCer overexpression and knockdown experiments indicate that cCer is a negative-feedback regulator of Nodal asymmetric signaling. We propose that cCer and mouse Cerl-2 have evolved distinct regulatory mechanisms but retained a conserved function in left-right development, which is to restrict Nodal activity to the left side of the embryo.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Portuguese validation of the climate change attitude survey: psychometric properties and relations with positive youth development

Promoting positive development may lead to young people’s active contribu tions to their environment through positive attitudes and behaviours. The Climate Change Attitude Survey (15-item version) aims to identify climate change attitudes differences in groups of students and to assess pre- to postintervention attitude changes. We intended to validate and test a possible extension of this scale among a Portuguese sample of adolescents and emerging adults. We also investigated whether higher scores on this scale would be positively associated with positive youth development. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, measurement invariance, and convergent validity were assessed. The results showed good psychometric properties aligned with the original factorial structure. Significant differences were found among female and male samples regarding beliefs and intentions. A small but significant positive association was identified with a positive youth development scale. We suggest this may be an adequate instrument to assess youth climate change beliefs and intentions. This study was conducted at the Psychology Research Centre (PSI/01662), School of Psychology, University of Minho, supported by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through the Portuguese State Budget (UIDB/PSI/01662/2020), and under a Ph.D. fellowship also supported by FCT (SFRH/BD/143814/2019)
