    Unusual Protrusion of Conjunctiva in Two Neonates with Harlequin Ichthyosis

    Background: We present two patients who developed severe protrusion of the conjunctiva and chemosis secondary to Harlequin ichthyosis (HI). Case Reports: Case 1 was a male infant diagnosed with HI who had parchment-like appearance and conjunctival protrusion with severe chemosis. Case 2 was a female infant on whom HI had been suspected before birth through ultrasonography. She showed thickened skin over the entire body and conjunctival protrusion with severe chemosis. For both cases, a vitamin A derivative was applied and the hyperkeratotic layer was peeled off every day. Great care was taken to sterilize and moisten the ocular surface. The conjunctival protrusion gradually improved and other systemic conditions were successfully treated. HI is a rare condition, but affected infants are surviving longer than previously and hence guidelines for ocular management are now required. Conclusions: Gentle and patient debridement of the hyperkeratotic skin and moisturizing were important in treating the unusual conjunctival protrusion

    Effects of substitutions of glycine and asparagine for serine132 on activity and binding of human lipoprotein lipase to very low density lipoproteins

    AbstractFor studying the role of Ser132 in the putative catalytic site of human lipoprotein lipase (LPL), mutant LPL cDNAs expressing LPLs with amino acid substitutions of Gly or Asn for Ser132 were obtained by site-directed mutagenesis, and were expressed in COS-1 cells. Considerable amounts of LPL enzyme protein mass were detected in the culture medium of COS-1 cells transfected with wild-type LPL, LPL-Gly132, or LPL-Asn132. LPL-Gly132 hydrolyzed Triton X-100-triolein and tributyrin as effectively as wild-type LPL, whereas LPL-Asn132 showed no activity. LPL-Asn132 bound to very low density lipoproteins as effectively as wild-type LPL

    Crucial roles of Robo proteins in midline crossing of cerebellofugal axons and lack of their up-regulation after midline crossing

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Robo1, Robo2 and Rig-1 (Robo3), members of the Robo protein family, are candidate receptors for the chemorepellents Slit and are known to play a crucial role in commissural axon guidance in the spinal cord. However, their roles at other axial levels remain unknown. Here we examine expression of Robo proteins by cerebellofugal (CF) commissural axons in the rostral hindbrain and investigate their roles in CF axon pathfinding by analysing Robo knockout mice.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We analysed the expression of Robo proteins by CF axons originating from deep cerebellar neurons in rodent embryos, focusing on developmental stages of their midline crossing and post-crossing navigation. At the stage of CF axon midline crossing, mRNAs of Robo1 and Robo2 are expressed in the nuclear transitory zone of the cerebellum, where the primordium of the deep cerebellar nuclei are located, supporting the notion that CF axons express Robo1 and Robo2. Indeed, immunohistochemical analysis of CF axons labelled by electroporation to deep cerebellar nuclei neurons indicates that Robo1 protein, and possibly also Robo2 protein, is expressed by CF axons crossing the midline. However, weak or no expression of these proteins is found on the longitudinal portion of CF axons. In <it>Robo1</it>/<it>2 </it>double knockout mice, many CF axons reach the midline but fail to exit it. We find that CF axons express Rig-1 (Robo3) before they reach the midline but not after the longitudinal turn. Consistent with this <it>in vivo </it>observation, axons elicited from a cerebellar explant in co-culture with a floor plate explant express Rig-1. In <it>Rig-1 </it>deficient mouse embryos, CF axons appear to project ipsilaterally without reaching the midline.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results indicate that Robo1, Robo2 or both are required for midline exit of CF axons. In contrast, Rig-1 is required for their approach to the midline. However, post-crossing up-regulation of these proteins, which plays an important role in spinal commissural axon guidance, does not appear to be required for the longitudinal navigation of CF axons after midline crossing. Our results illustrate that although common mechanisms operate for midline crossing at different axial levels, significant variation exists in post-crossing navigation.</p

    Active omni wheel possessing seamless periphery and omnidirectional vehicle using it

    Vehicles that are capable of achieving omnidirectional movement will work very efficiently in factories and warehouses. To meet this requirement, various omnidirectional vehicles have been proposed, but the wheel mechanism makes precise movement difficult. The active omni wheel (AOW), which can drive itself in an arbitrary direction at any time, can address this issue, but our previous design had mechanical vibration and acoustic noise due to gaps in the outer circumference of the wheel, and its complicated structure had a large number of parts. To solve these problems, this study developed a new AOW possessing a seamless periphery and simple structure. By using barrel-shaped friction-driven outer rollers arranged alternately on the left and right sides of the wheel, gaps between the outer rollers are eliminated and a smooth periphery is realized. Additionally, the power transmission paths were simplified to reduce the number of parts. This paper explains the AOW structure and then presents analyses of structural conditions and kinematics of the AOW. A two-wheel-drive omnidirectional vehicle using the AOW was built and kinematically analyzed. Finally, experiments using the developed AOW and vehicle were conducted and their effectiveness was verified

    Anxiety evaluated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale as a predictor of postoperative nausea and vomiting: a pilot study

    The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) remains high, and improving the accuracy of PONV prediction remains challenging. The primary aim of this study is to examine the impact of anxiety scores evaluated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) on the PONV prediction model. We hypothesized that anxiety and depression, quantified using the HADS, could improve the accuracy of the PONV predictive model. This pilot study evaluated 100 patients. The HADS was conducted by a self-evaluation method before thoracoscopic surgery for lung tumors, and the anesthesia method was standardized. The criterion was whether the nurse in charge of the patient who complained of PONV assessed that drug administration was necessary. As the main analysis, the odds ratio of the HADS score for predicting PONV was evaluated using multivariable logistic regression models. Further, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves of the model with the HADS score added to the variables of without-anxiety predictors and the model with the variables of without-anxiety predictors only were compared. The anxiety score was significantly higher in the PONV group than in the no PONV group (P = 0.021). For predictive accuracy, the model that included age, sex, smoking history, history of PONV, and anxiety score had a higher area under the ROC curve than did the model excluding the anxiety score (P = 0.021). In conclusion, the findings indicate that the HADS is worth investigating as a predictor of PONV

    Accuracy Assessment of Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI) and Chlorophyll Carotenoid Index (CCI) Derived from GCOM-C/SGLI with In Situ Data

    The photochemical reflectance index (PRI) and the chlorophyll carotenoid index (CCI) are carotenoid-sensitive vegetation indices, which can monitor vegetation&rsquo;s photosynthetic activities. One unique satellite named &ldquo;Global Change Observation Mission-Climate (GCOM-C)&rdquo; is equipped with a sensor, &ldquo;Second Generation Global Imager (SGLI)&rdquo;, which has the potential to frequently and simultaneously observe PRI and CCI over a wide swath. However, the observation accuracy of PRI and CCI derived from GCOM-C/SGLI remains unclear in forests. Thus, we demonstrated their accuracy assessment by comparing them with in situ data. We collected in situ spectral irradiance data at four forest sites in Japan for three years. We statistically compared satellite PRI with in situ PRI, and satellite CCI with in situ CCI. From the obtained results, the satellite PRI showed poor agreement (the best: r=0.294 (p&lt;0.05)) and the satellite CCI showed good agreement (the best: r=0.911 (p&lt;0.001)). The greater agreement of satellite CCI is possibly because satellite CCI contained fewer outliers and satellite CCI was more resistant to small noise, compared to satellite PRI. Our results suggest that the satellite CCI is more suitable for practical use than the satellite PRI with the latest version (version 3) of GCOM-C/SGLI&rsquo;s products
