The aim of this study was to compare the reproductive traits, lactation milk yield, and body measurements of the Damascus (Shami) and Kilis goats raised as dairy goats in the dry climatic conditions of the Southeastern Anatolia region of Turkey. The study was perfomed using 596 Damascus goats and 82 Kilis goats between 3-5 years old. It was observed that the lactation milk yield, lactation period, withers height, and leg circumference of the Damascus goats (175.86 kg, 227.48 days, 72.67 cm, and 74.10 cm, respectively) were significantly higher (P<0.05) than those of the Kilis goats (107.48 kg, 170.39 days, 69.70 cm and 71.83 cm, respectively). This analysis indicated that the Damascus goat may be a good breed for dry climatic conditions. It is suggested that focusing on growing Damascus goats could increase productivity in the Southeastern Anatolian region of Turke

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of vitamin C on ECG and some blood parameters in chickens stressed by ACTH. Sixty Leghorn chickens were randomly allotted to control and experimental groups. Prior to the experimental period ECG’s were recorded and blood samples were taken from both groups of chickens; some blood parameters were also determined. In the control group, isotonic sodium chloride solution was administered at a dose of 2.5 mL per chicken per day for a period of 5 days. In the experimental group, vitamin C (Redoxon Amp, Roche) was administered intramuscularly at the same dose (containing 250 mg vitamin C) and period of time. On the 5th day of the experiment chickens in both groups received 50 IU ACTH intramuscularly. Three hours following this application ECGs were recorded and blood samples were taken from both groups of chickens; some blood parameters were also determined. In conclusion, sinusoidal tachycardia was observed and an increase was determined (P<0.05) in the level of corticosterone and heterophil/lymphocytes (H/L) ratio after ACTH application in the control group

The managament of rare nasal mass-nasal dermoid sinus cysts: open rhinoplasty

    Get PDF
The differential diagnosis of midline nasal masses includes inflammatory lesions, post-traumatic deformities, benign neoplasms, malignant neoplasms, congenital and vascular masses. Midline congenital lesions of the nose are rare congenital anomalies. Their incidence is estimated at 1 per 20,000 to 40,000 births consisting of gliomas, encephaloceles, and nasal dermoid sinus cysts. Nasal dermoid sinus cysts account for 1–3% of dermoid cysts overall and 11–12% of head and neck dermoids. Most lesions are diagnosed within the first three years of life but in some cases the diagnosis can be prolonged. We present an 18-year old and a two and a half-year old male patients who are concerned about drainage from the tip of the nose with recurrent infection and operated with a diagnosis of nasal dermoid sinus cyst

MITOCHONDRIAL DNA COPY NUMBER IS ASSOCIATED WITH ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER

Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common psychiatric disorder in children. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain its etiology. Mitochondrial dysfunction (MD) is suggested to be one of the causes of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The objective of the study was to evaluate the relationship between MD and ADHD by investigating mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) levels from peripheral blood leukocytes, one of the best biomarkers of mitochondrial dysfunction. Subjects and methods: This study included 56 children aged 6-16 years who were diagnosed with ADHD for the first time and 56 age- and sex matched children without ADHD. Real-time PCR was performed to determine the relative mtDNA copy number in each study participant. Results: The mean mtDNA copy number of the case group was 57.623±24.827 and that of the control group was 44.204±18.926 (p=0.002). The mtDNA copy number of the case group was higher than that of the control group. Results of ROC curve analysis provided a mtDNA cutoff value of 45. Conclusion: Significantly higher mtDNA copy number in ADHD group may suggest mitochondrial dysfunction in the etiopathogenesis of ADHD

This thesis aims to focus on the elements of time and space in feminist dystopias. Dystopia, as a genre of literature, which was used for the first time in 1868 by the English philosopher John Stuart Mill will be analyzed within its own historical context. Also, the method of how female authors change and convert this literary genre into a feminist perspective will be examined to show dystopias’ changing aspects which are affected by gender ideologies. This study theoretically will center upon the genre of dystopia in the reference to the fields of women and gender studies and feminist literary criticism. Some feminist dystopias by female authors will be analyzed in terms of these elements, especially works of Turkish, American and English literature will be used. Finally, in this analysis, perception of time and space in feminist dystopias will be studied in terms of sociological and cultural theories and relations between time, space and freedom will be discussed, too

Comparison of UV- and second derivative-spectrophotometric and LC methods for the determination of valsartan in pharmaceutical formulation

UV- and second derivative-spectrophotometric and high-performance liquid chromatographic methods for the determination of valsartan in pharmaceutical formulation have been developed. For the first method, UV-spectrophotometry, standard solutions were measured at 205.6 nm. The linearity changes were found to be 2.0-10.0 mug ml(-1) in ethanol and the regression equation was A = 1.05 x 10(-1) C + 4.26 x 10 (- 2) (r = 0.9997). For the second method, the distances between two extremum values (peak-to-peak amplitudes), 221.6 and 231.2 nm were measured in the second order derivative-spectra of standard solutions. Calibration curves were constructed by plotting d(2)A/dlambda(2) values against concentrations, 0.5-4.0 mug ml(-1) of valsartan standards in ethanol. Regression equation of linear calibration graph was calculated as D = 2.9 x 10(-2)C - 2.37 x 10(-3) (r = 0.9996). The third method was based on high-performance liquid chromatography on C18 column using acetonitrile, phosphate buffer as a mobile phase and losartan as internal standard. Detection was carried out at 265 nm with a UV-detector. The assay was linear over the concentration range at 1.0-5.0 mug ml(-1) and regression equation was found to be A = 2.74 x 10(-1)C + 2.06 x 10(-2) (r = 0:9991). Commercial capsules containing 160 mg valsartan were analysed by the developed methods and the results obtained were compared statistically at 95% confidence level. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
