    PROVISION OF IN-SERVICE TRAINING NEEDS FOR HEADS OF DEPARTMENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN KENYA: A STUDY OF MARAKWET WEST SUB COUNTY

    Ministry of Education together with public secondary schools have initiated continuous in-service training for their heads of departments. This study assessed the influence of in-service training of Heads of department (HODs). The objectives of the study were to; determine the mode of in-service training provided to HODs and the content of in-service training. The study was conducted in 28 public secondary schools in Marakwet Sub County. The target respondents were 28 principals and 112 HODs. Data collected was analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS Version 22.0) aided in quantitative data coding, entry and analysis. Study findings revealed that HODs rarely attend in-service training. Majority of schools were found not to have a plan for HODs in-service training. It was also established that in-service training for HODs focused on curriculum implementation, supervision, teaching methods and evaluation of learners compared to teacher resource management, innovation and management. The study recommends that there is need for regular in-service training provision for teachers. Needs assessment also needs to be conducted to ensure that training content provided to HODs is relevant.  Article visualizations

    Effects of chemical functionalization on electronic transport in carbon nanobuds

    Carbon nanobuds form a class of hybrid structures consisting of carbon nanotubes onto which fullerene types of units are covalently grown. Due to higher electrophilicity and curvature of the fullerene moiety a carbon nanobud exhibits higher reactivity compared to a plain nanotube. In this paper we study how the electronic structure and transport properties of carbon nanobuds are affected by chemical modification. The studied model systems comprise carbon nanobuds that are chemically modified by attaching Li and F atoms as well as tetrathiafulvalene molecules. We use the density functional theory combined with Landauer-BĂźttiker electron transport formalism. According to the simulations, the attached units change the relative positions of the Fermi levels, creating a distinctive effect on the electronic transport properties along associated carbon nanotubes. In semiconducting nanotubes the change in the conductance is systematic and should be detectable in experiments. Hence, the carbon nanobuds are potential candidates for sensor applications.Peer reviewe

    Recommending Learning Videos for MOOCs and Flipped Classrooms

    [EN] New teaching approaches are emerging in higher education, such as flipped classrooms. In addition, academic institutions are offering new types of training like Massive Online Open Courses. Both of these new ways of education require high-quality learning objects for their success, with learning videos being the most common to provide theoretical concepts. This paper describes a hybrid learning recommender system based on content-based techniques, which is able to recommend useful videos to learners and teachers from a learning video repository.     Influence of Nanoparticle Size and Shape on Oligomer Formation of an Amyloidogenic Peptide

    Understanding the influence of macromolecular crowding and nanoparticles on the formation of in-register β\beta-sheets, the primary structural component of amyloid fibrils, is a first step towards describing \emph{in vivo} protein aggregation and interactions between synthetic materials and proteins. Using all atom molecular simulations in implicit solvent we illustrate the effects of nanoparticle size, shape, and volume fraction on oligomer formation of an amyloidogenic peptide from the transthyretin protein. Surprisingly, we find that inert spherical crowding particles destabilize in-register β\beta-sheets formed by dimers while stabilizing β\beta-sheets comprised of trimers and tetramers. As the radius of the nanoparticle increases crowding effects decrease, implying smaller crowding particles have the largest influence on the earliest amyloid species. We explain these results using a theory based on the depletion effect. Finally, we show that spherocylindrical crowders destabilize the ordered β\beta-sheet dimer to a greater extent than spherical crowders, which underscores the influence of nanoparticle shape on protein aggregation
