Flow Instabilities in Boiling Channels : Part 1 Pressure Drop Oscillation

The pressure drop oscillation in a boiling channel system was analyzed by using a lumped parameter model in which the pressure drop characteristics was described by a third order equation of the flow rate. The momentum equation in the boiling channel system was thus reduced to a Van der Pol equation. The limit cycle and the period of the pressure drop oscillation obtained from the Van der Pol equation agreed qualitatively with experimental results

Flow Instabilities in Boiling Channels : Part 2 Geysering

An experimental study on geysering was carried out in an R-113 forced flow boiling system. The effects of flow rate, heat flux density, system pressure and heating condition on the threshold of geysering and on the period and amplitude of the differential pressure at the test section were studied. The mechanism of geysering was analyzed by using a simple model. The analytically predicted period and amplitude of oscillation agreed qualitatively with the experimental results and thus supported the validity of the model

Institutions of higher education and research are required to produce students who will internationally be contributing in academic and other fields: to read and write articles, give oral presentations and discuss relevant issues, in English. To realize the goal, the institutions need, on the one hand, comprehensive English programs for undergraduate and graduate students, and the other, the environment in which students study English independently. UEC TOKYO has started such programs, and the Committee for Language Self-Study Room has been, in cooperation with and with the help of other offices, making classrooms equipped with computers and other instruments needed for language education and students’ self-study. This report focuses on activities of the committee in the academic year 2009: (1) the move of the Language Self-Study Room (2) reconfiguration of the server and client system, (3) computer network (4) installation of computers operated by Information Technology Center (5) improvement of the media environment such as the video-recording of presentation

The present report is on two kinds of practice of English education for enhancing presentation skills, using the equipment in the Language Self-Study Room (LSSR): (1) practice in some classes for undergraduate and graduate courses (2) the summer seminar, from August 11 to 13, 2010, for students and staffWhat is common in both activities is that: (3) Participants chose the topic for presentation, read relevant articles, wrote an essay and made Power Point presentation. In order to improve their presentation skills, the participants practiced pronunciation using a computer-assisted material in the LSSR. (4) The presentations were video-taped and used for giving appropriate advice for improvement. The participants utilized materials in the LSSR mainly in two ways: (5) They repeatedly practiced English pronunciation and rhythm using PC@LL, a pronunciation practice software. (6) They checked their video-taped presentation and refined the presentation skills. Through the practice, the participants improved their presentation skills and learned the importance of self-study. The mission of the LSSR is to provide the environment in which ambitious students and staff in UEC TOKYO will be able to fully develop themselves in their English abilities so that they will contribute fully in their own way. The authors realized the need of efforts to make the LSSR used more
