    Correlates of loneliness among university students

    Background The purpose of this study was to investigate level of loneliness, essential needs during university education, and relationships between loneliness, essential needs, and characteristics of university students. A sample comprising 721 students participated in the study. The mean age was 21.58 (SD = 1.73) with a range from 18 to 25. The majority of the students were female (70.6%) and were living in students' dormitory (67.5%) with low (87.8%) income, away from their parents. Methods The UCLA-R loneliness scale and sociodemographic questionnaire which includes an open-ended question on essential needs during university education were administered. Pearson-Product-Moment correlations were used to explore the relationships between participants' loneliness, needs, and characteristics. Results It was found that 60.2% of the participants experienced loneliness. Economical support (81.6%), social interaction (46.9%) and psychosocial support (35%) were the essential needs during university education reported by the participants. The study findings indicate that there were significant relationships between the needs of economical support, social interaction, and loneliness level of university students. Results also show that there were significant relationships among romantic relationship, parents' status and loneliness. Participants' loneliness levels were relatively higher who had not any romantic relationship and were not from married families. Conclusion The findings of this study provided essential information, about Turkish university students, concerning: level of loneliness and relationships that exist among loneliness, needs and sociodemographic characteristics. The findings also suggest implications for psychosocial practice. Because of the mean of loneliness were found to be high (45.49 ± 10.07), for this study, professionals need to pay attention to Turkish university students' psychosocial state, and need to empower them in establishing social relations

    Clinical and Electrocardiography Changes in Patients Treated with Capecitabine

    Background: We aimed to identify the incidence of cardiac events with capecitabine treatment. Methods: The study included 52 patients (median age 59 years) with cancer treated at our Medical Oncology Clinic between 2009 and 2010. Cardiac events from capecitabine treatment were classified into 4 groups: cardiac symptoms, physical signs, electrocardiography (ECG) findings, and severe adverse cardiac effects. Results: The patients received either single-agent capecitabine or a combination chemotherapy including capecitabine. After initiation of capecitabine, 18 patients (34.6%) had new onset cardiovascular symptoms, 6 (11.5%) had new onset physical signs and 17 (32.6%) had new onset ECG findings. New onset ECG findings included prolonged corrected QT interval (n = 10, 19.2%) and prolonged PR interval (n = 3, 5.8%). Severe adverse capecitabine-induced cardiac side effects were observed in 5.8% of the patients, but none of the patients had myocardial infarction or died. Conclusion: Cardiac events are not rare during capecitebine treatment and patients should be followed closely to avoid cardiac morbidity and mortality. Copyright (C) 2011 S. Karger AG, Base

    Changes in brain size during the menstrual cycle.

    BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence for hormone-dependent modification of function and behavior during the menstrual cycle, but little is known about associated short-term structural alterations of the brain. Preliminary studies suggest that a hormone-dependent decline in brain volume occurs in postmenopausal, or women receiving antiestrogens, long term. Advances in serial MR-volumetry have allowed for the accurate detection of small volume changes of the brain. Recently, activity-induced short-term structural plasticity of the brain was demonstrated, challenging the view that the brain is as rigid as formerly believed. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used MR-volumetry to investigate short-term brain volume changes across the menstrual cycle in women or a parallel 4 week period in men, respectively. We found a significant grey matter volume peak and CSF loss at the time of ovulation in females. This volume peak did not correlate with estradiol or progesterone hormone levels. Men did not show any significant brain volume alterations. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: These data give evidence of short-term hormone-dependent structural brain changes during the menstrual cycle, which need to be correlated with functional states and have to be considered in structure-associated functional brain research

    Longitudinal non-targeted metabolomic profiling of urine samples for monitoring of kidney transplantation patients

    The assessment of kidney function within the first year following transplantation is crucial for predicting long-term graft survival. This study aimed to develop a robust and accurate model using metabolite profiles to predict early long-term outcomes in patient groups at the highest risk of early graft loss. A group of 61 kidney transplant recipients underwent thorough monitoring during a one-year follow-up period, which included a one-week hospital stay and follow-up assessments at three and six months. Based on their 12-month follow-up serum creatinine levels: Group 2 had levels exceeding 1.5 mg/dl, while Group 1 had levels below 1.5 mg/dl. Metabolites were detected by mass spectrometer and first pre-processed. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were employed to identify significant differences between the two groups. Nineteen metabolites were found to differ significantly in the 1st week, and seventeen metabolites in the 3rd month (adjusted p-value 1.1 or a FC 1). However, no significant differences were observed in the 6th month. These distinctive metabolites mainly belonged to lipid, fatty acid, and amino acid categories. Ten models were constructed using a backward conditional approach, with the best performance seen in model 5 for Group 2 at the 1st-week mark (AUC 0.900) and model 3 at the 3rd-month mark (AUC 0.924). In conclusion, the models developed in the early stages may offer potential benefits in the management of kidney transplant patients

    Long-Term Outcomes and Prognostic Factors of High-Risk Malignant Melanoma Patients after Surgery and Adjuvant High-Dose Interferon Treatment: A Single-Center Experience

    Background: Surgical excision constitutes an important part of the treatment of local advanced malignant melanoma. Due to the high recurrence risk, adjuvant high-dose interferon therapy is still the only therapy used in stage IIB and III high-risk melanoma patients. Methods: One hundred two high-risk malignant melanoma patients who received high-dose interferon-alpha-2b therapy were evaluated retrospectively. The clinicopathological features, survival times, and prognostic factors of the patients were determined. Results: The median disease-free and overall survival times were 25.2 and 60.8 months, respectively. Our findings revealed that male gender, advanced disease stage, lymph node involvement, lymphatic invasion, the presence of ulceration, and a high Clark level were significant negative prognostic factors. Conclusion: In light of the favorable survival results obtained in this study, high-dose interferon treatment as adjuvant therapy for high-risk melanoma is still an efficient treatment and its possible side effects can be prevented by taking the necessary precautions.
