Globalization in Reverse: The Missing Link in Energy Consumption

Get PDF
We present a theoretical framework that demonstrates the globalization as a beneficial trend which fosters the movement of advanced technology from developed nations to developing countries leading to the deployment of large scale energy projects on renewable technologies We explore the implications of this framework with panel data and vector autoregressive VAR analyses These suggest that an increase in social globalization which accounts for the spread of know-how skilled workers and technology by 1 percent reduces the energy consumption by roughly 21 percent This lead to increasing the employment of clean and renewable energy sources through the attainment of technological efficiency However substantial increase in traditional energy demand from developing countries suggests the trend of anti-globalizatio

Media use, HIV/AIDS knowledge, and sexual beliefs: an exploration of differences between races

As the numbers rise among African Americans who are contracting HIV/AIDS, it becomes evident that research is needed to examine where African Americans obtain HIV/AIDS information. This study identified where African Americans obtain HIV/AIDS information and examined how that information affects African Americans’ sexual beliefs about HIV/AIDS. The theoretical foundation for this study was the Health Belief Model (HBM). This study used a survey method. The data analysis demonstrated that race does influence the type of media an individual uses. Race does not impact an individual’s access to health information. Knowledge about HIV/AIDS impacts an individual’s sexual beliefs about HIV/AIDS. Cues from the media and physicians impact an individual’s sexual beliefs about HIV/AIDS. Perceived susceptibility impacts an individual’s sexual beliefs about HIV/AIDS. The frequency of any media does not always lead to knowledge about HIV/AIDS. African Americans are more likely to use television to obtain HIV/AIDS information than other races (r = .161, p \u3c 0.01). In addition, African Americans are more likely to use radio to obtain HIV/AIDS information than other races (r = .193, p \u3c 0.01). Thus, African Americans media use of radio and television increased their knowledge about HIV/AIDS

Efficacy of different vinegar solutions in removal of Candida albicans from denture acrylic resin

Get PDF
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Msc (Dent) (OMP) Johannesburg,2018.Background and Aims: Denture hygiene has become an important aspect in managing patients who often present with signs of denture stomatitis associated with Candida infection. There is a need for denture disinfectants which are of low cost and are easily accessible to denture wearers. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of different vinegar solutions in removal of C. albicans from denture acrylic resin. Materials and Methods: Hundred and ninety-two acrylic plates were used. White wine vinegar (6%), rice vinegar (5.5%), and apple cider vinegar (5%) were used as disinfectants. Distilled water and 0.2% Chlorhexidine were used as controls. Cultures of C. albicans ATCC 90028 and a HIV strains were grown in Saboraud’s dextrose agar. Sterile acrylic resin plates were immersed in test tubes and 200μl of C. albicans suspension was added to each tube. Contaminated acrylic plates were divided into 5 groups of 6 plates each. Plates were immersed in 20 ml of white wine vinegar (WWV), Rice vinegar (RV), Apple cider vinegar (ACV), sterile distilled H2O, and chlorhexidine (CHX). These were incubated at room temperature for 30minutes, 1 hour and 8hours. Two non-exposed plates were included as controls. Results: ACV, WWV and RV equally eliminated both C. albicans ATCC 90028 and HIV strains from acrylic plates at 8 hours (% Kill=100). All tested vinegars failed to completely eliminate C. albicans strains at 30 minutes and 1 hour, with no statistical significant difference for ATCC strain(p<0.05) and with statistical difference for ACV (p=0.03) and RV (p=0.01) respectively for HIV strain. CHX completely eliminated ATCC strain at all tested times (%=100), but failed to completely eliminate HIV strain at 30 minutes and 1 hour. Sterile water, a negative control failed to completely eliminate both C. albicans strains at all tested times. Conclusions: The results of the current study confirm that vinegar can be used to remove C. albicans from dentures, if used for 8 hours.LG201

Empowering Women to Eliminate Gender Discrimination in Asia

Get PDF
Gender is a common term where as gender discrimination is meant only for women, because females are the only victims of gender discrimination and it is more pervasive in Asia. Gender discrimination is not biologically determined but it is determined by socially. This discrimination against women can be and must be changed with proper and perpetuate efforts. Half of the world’s population is females. They are doing two-third of labor of the total work in the world but received only one-tenth of the world’s total income. Nearly two-third of the women is illiterate and they have possessed only one third of the world’s assets. In the world, only one-fourth of the families are headed by female. Bangladesh is a male dominant society and gender discrimination is customized habitually. The paper attempts to address few important issues like- issues related with gender discrimination, areas of gender inequity and how best to eliminate it in the Asian countries.

Succession Management and its impact on Family Business

If your CEO has a sudden heart attack, do you know who will take the chief executive's place? What if your top executives are wooed away to another firm? Do you have the next generation of leaders ready to fill those roles? The only way to reduce the effect of lost leadership is through a strong succession planning program that identifies and fosters the next generation of leaders through mentoring, training and stretch assignments, so they are ready to take the helm when the time comes. Research also supports sound succession planning. “Every company has a succession planning document,” says David Larcker, a professor in the graduate school of business at Stanford University. The question you have to ask is, “Will it be operational?" The Roadmap of this paper offers the importance of succession management, its benefits, process of succession management, succession management and family business issues etc.Jim Skinner, former CEO of McDonald's Corp., was known to tell managers: "Give me the names of two people who could succeed you." It was just one way the CEO continued the culture of succession planning at McDonald's.It was an understandable priority considering Skinner only landed in the role in 2005 after two other CEO's died suddenly over the course of just two years. And when he retired in 2012, Skinner was confident that his successor, Chief Operating Officer Don Thompson, was ready to take over, because he spent much of his seven years mentoring him."I basically felt the responsibility to the board of directors to be sure I provided them with someone who could run the company when I'm gone," Skinner told Fortune a year before his retirement. "Until I was capable of doing that, I would not have left."This kind of leadership level commitment to training and mentoring the next generation is a vital component of succession planning. And while most executives understand the importance of succession planning efforts, few of them believe their organization excels in this category.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Review

Get PDF
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide. Chronic liver disease due to viral hepatitis, alcohol, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, etc are risk factors for HCC development. Triphasic contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abdomen are modalities for HCC diagnosis best for lesions >2 cm size. For lesions <2 cm size, liquid biopsy with the determination of cell-free DNA in the blood is a newly emerging technique for diagnosis as well as for the planning of molecular targeted therapy. With the new concept of “Treatment stage migration”, the updated Barcelona clinic liver cancer (BCLC) algorithm for HCC management allows the best treatment modality for an individual patient. In addition to definitive therapy of resection and liver transplantation, palliative therapies like ablation, transarterial embolization, and others can be used. Among molecular targeted therapies for advanced BCLC stage C HCC, lenvatinib as first line, regorafenib and cabozantinib as second line therapy have been approved recently. The checkpoint inhibitors (CPIs), nivolumab and pembrolizumab, have revolutionized oncology practice in other solid organ cancers and have shown promising results in HCC management
