Subversive Skylines: Local History and the Rise of the Sayyids in Mongol Yazd

This article examines the emergence of the Ḥusaynī sayyids as key facilitators of the Mongols’ acculturation to Islamo-Persianate society and traces the expansion of their influence at imperial courts through the seventeenth century. Previous scholarship has emphasized the pivotal role of figures like Rashīduddīn Hamadānī in brokering reciprocal processes of acculturation from the empire's centre. This study builds on such work by shifting the focus to Yazd, a provincial city. It explores the evolving and unique role of Yazdī sayyids in facilitating such processes as they fashioned new patronage networks at court and reconfigured the urban morphology of Yazd. Furthermore, using local histories alongside universal ones, this study explores narrative strategies by which Yazdī authors, writing after the Mongol period, commemorated the sayyids’ emergence. It situates these writings in the context of larger transformations that affected relations between provincial elites and the imperial centre throughout these periods

Le changement social à Téhéran

The author's objective is to reveal the mechanisms involved in the transition from tradition to modernity in Tehran society. The situation of the town of Tehran is studied, using documents relating to economic and socio-cultural development, before comparing the differences in behaviour and opinions creating a gap between three generations of inhabitants. Several points are worth mentioning : 1) The town has experienced fundamental changes. 2) In spite of numerous difficulties, society is faced with a process of fundamental cultural changes. 3) It is witnessing the emergence of a brand new generation. 4) This generation is in conflict with the previous generations on several points (choice of spouse, husband-wife relations). However, these differences are not significant enough to create generation conflicts.L'auteur s'efforce de mettre en exergue les modalités du mouvement de la tradition à la modernité de la société téhéranaise. La situation de la ville de Téhéran est étudiée sur la base de documents relatifs au développement économique et socioculturel, avant de mettre en relief les différences de comportement et de pensée séparant trois générations d'habitants. Plusieurs points méritent d'être mentionnés : 1) la ville a connu des changements fondamentaux. 2) en dépit de multiples difficultés la société se trouve dans un processus de changements culturels essentiels. 3) elle connaît l'émergence d'une génération tout à fait nouvelle. 4) cette génération se trouve en désaccord avec les précédentes sur plusieurs points (choix du conjoint, rapports hommes-femmes).
