Romanesque and territory. The construction materials of Sardinian medieval churches: new approaches to the valorization, conservation and restoration
This paper is intended to illustrate a multidisciplinary research project devoted to the study of the constructive materials of the Romanesque churches in Sardinia during the “Giudicati” period (11th -13th centuries). The project focuses on the relationship between a selection of monuments and their territory, both from a historical-architectural perspective and from a more modern perspective addressing future restoration works. The methodologies of the traditional art-historical research (study of bibliographic, epigraphic and archival sources, formal reading of artifacts) are flanked by new technologies: digital surveys executed with a 3D laser-scanner, analyses of the materials (stones, mortars, bricks) with different instrumental methods: X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for chemical composition, X-ray diffractometer (XRD) to determine the alteration phases (e.g., soluble salts), optical microscopy and electronic (SEM) to study textures, mineral assemblages and microstructures, termogravimetric/differential scanning, calorimetric analysis (TG/DTA) for the composition of the binder mortars.
This multidisciplinary approach allows the achieving of important results in an archaeometric context: 1) from a historical point of view, with the possible identification of ancient traffics, trade routes, sources of raw materials, construction phases, wall textures; 2) from a conservative point of view, by studying chemical and physical weathering processes of stone materials compatible for replacement in case of future restoration works.
Sardinian Romanesque architectural heritage is particularly remarkable: about 200 churches of different types and sizes, with the almost exclusive use of cut stones. Bi- or poly-chromy, deriving from the use of different building materials, characterizes many of these monuments, becoming also a vehicle for political and cultural meanings. The paper will present some case studies aimed to illustrate the progress of the project and the results achieved
Topological Gravity versus Supergravity on Manifolds with Special Holonomy
We construct a topological theory for euclidean gravity in four dimensions,
by enforcing self-duality conditions on the spin connection. The corresponding
topological symmetry is associated to the SU(2) X diffeomorphism X U(1)
invariance. The action of this theory is that of d=4, N=2 supergravity, up to a
twist. The topological field theory is SU(2) invariant, but the full SO(4)
invariance is recovered after untwist. This suggest that the topological
gravity is relevant for manifolds with special holonomy. The situation is
comparable to that of the topological Yang-Mills theory in eight dimensions,
for which the SO(8) invariance is broken down to Spin(7), but is recovered

Topological Vector Symmetry of BRSTQFT and Construction of Maximal Supersymmetry
The scalar and vector topological Yang-Mills symmetries determine a closed
and consistent sector of Yang-Mills supersymmetry. We provide a geometrical
construction of these symmetries, based on a horizontality condition on
reducible manifolds. This yields globally well-defined scalar and vector
topological BRST operators. These operators generate a subalgebra of maximally
supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, which is small enough to be closed off-shell
with a finite set of auxiliary fields and large enough to determine the
Yang-Mills supersymmetric theory. Poincar\'e supersymmetry is reached in the
limit of flat manifolds. The arbitrariness of the gauge functions in BRSTQFTs
is thus removed by the requirement of scalar and vector topological symmetry,
which also determines the complete supersymmetry transformations in a twisted
way. Provided additional Killing vectors exist on the manifold, an equivariant
extension of our geometrical framework is provided, and the resulting
"equivariant topological field theory" corresponds to the twist of super
Yang-Mills theory on Omega backgrounds.Comment: 50 page
General Solution Of Linear Vector Supersymmetry
We give the general solution of the Ward identity for the linear vector
supersymmetry which characterizes all topological models. Such solution, whose
expression is quite compact and simple, greatly simplifies the study of
theories displaying a supersymmetric algebraic structure, reducing to a few
lines the proof of their possible finiteness. In particular, the cohomology
technology usually involved for the quantum extension of these theories, is

Let's Twist Again: N=2 Super Yang Mills Theory Coupled To Matter
We give the twisted version of N=2 Super Yang Mills theory coupled to matter,
including quantum fields, supersymmetry transformations, action and algebraic
structure. We show that the whole action, coupled to matter, can be written as
the variation of a nilpotent operator, modulo field equations. An extended
Slavnov-Taylor identity, collecting gauge symmetry and supersymmetry, is
written, which allows to define the web of algebraic constraints, in view of
the algebraic renormalization and of the extension of the non-renormalization

Effects of acute cigarette smoke exposure on macrophage kinetics and release of tumour necrosis factor α in rats
Some biological parameters before and after an acute episode of cigarette smoking in rats have been evaluated. The carboxyhaemoglobin levels depended either on the number of cigarettes, or on the time of exposure to cigarette smoke and returned to pre-smoking values in about 2 h. The evaluation of the kinetics of alveolar and peritoneal macrophages in rats after a smoking session of three cigarettes within an hour, indicated that alveolar macrophages in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid significantly increased 8 h after the smoking, whereas the number of peritoneal macrophages remained practically constant. The incubation of these cells for various times at 37°C in a humidified atmosphere, resulted in a spontaneous release, 24 h thereafter, of variable amounts of tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα), which remained practically constant during the following days. Neither alveolar macrophages of control rats, nor peritoneal macrophages of both control and smoking rats were able to release TNFα. Moreover, after lipopolysaccharide induction of alveolar macrophages of both control and smoking rats, an increased release of TNFα was observed, indicating that these cells were in an active state
Chronic cigarette smoking enhances spontaneous release of tumour necrosis factor-α from alveolar macrophages of rats
Some biological effects of chronic cigarette smoking (two cigarettes for 2 h, daily for 4 months) in rats were evaluated. During the smoking period, body weight of smoker rats was always significantly lower than that of control rats. Immediately after the last smoking session the carboxyhaemoglobin concentration in the blood was about 8.5% and the polymorphonuclear cells in the bronchoalveolar fluid increased significantly. At the same time, enzymatic analyses on the supernatants of bronchoalveolar fluid revealed a significant increase of β-glucuronidase in the smoker group. Alveolar macrophages, collected 0, 8 and 24 h after the last smoking session, significantly increased the generation of superoxide anion and, after incubation for 24 h at 37° C in a humidified atmosphere, released significantly high amounts of TNF-α. When challenged with lipopolysaccharide, alveolar macrophages of smoker rats released much more TNF-α but, in such a case, TNF-α release was about one half of that observed in the control group. Peritoneal macrophages of both control and smoker rats were unable either to generate high levels of superoxide anion or to release significant amounts of TNF-α. The results clearly demonstrated the activated state of alveolar macrophages and the resting state of peritoneal macrophages
