Improved mass cultivation of the marine diatom Chaetoceros calcitrans for shellfish hatcheries : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy in Biotechnology at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand
A medium for the optimal growth of Chaetoceros calcitrans in batch and continuous culture systems was developed. A method was developed for continuous culture of C. calcitrans that was free from detrimental infection by bacteria. The concentration of tested nutrients in the developed medium were sodium nitrate, 160 mg/L; sodium dihydrogen orthophosphate, 40 mg/L; and the molar Si:N ratio was 0.25 (99.9 mg/L sodium metasilicate). Isolated bacterial strains were shown to be detrimental to the growth of C. calcitrans in batch and continuous culture. Electrolytically treated water was suitable for the growth of C. calcitrans, but a subsequent flourish of bacterial growth at the late exponential phase reduced the quality of the algal cells and made the culture unsuitable for feeding to shellfish larvae. Heat treated water (95°C for ten and a half minutes) gave stable growth for the continuous culture of C. calcitrans in 38 L plastic bioreactor bags for at least 38 days. The superficial gas velocity in the culture bags was 0.09 L/min. Higher superficial gas velocities (e.g. 0.40 L/min were detrimental to C. calcitrans
Prolific Compositions
Under what circumstances might every extension of a combinatorial structure
contain more copies of another one than the original did? This property, which
we call prolificity, holds universally in some cases (e.g., finite linear
orders) and only trivially in others (e.g., permutations). Integer
compositions, or equivalently layered permutations, provide a middle ground. In
that setting, there are prolific compositions for a given pattern if and only
if that pattern begins and ends with 1. For each pattern, there is an easily
constructed automaton that recognises prolific compositions for that pattern.
Some instances where there is a unique minimal prolific composition for a
pattern are classified
News Map Gaps: Regional News Coverage in the City
'Why isn't my town on the map?' (Keillor 1985, p.90) The lament of residents of the mythical Lake Wobegon, when fifty square miles of central Minnesota were mistakenly omitted by government surveyors. This content analysis of statewide television news reveals a number of Lake Wobegons missing from Queensland's television news map. Distance from a newsroom (not from the capital) appears to be a major factor contributing to the 'invisibility' of certain cities and towns. A local news service appears to enhance a region's chances of 'balanced' statewide coverage. Based on this study the hidden impact of local TV news closures could be a Lake Wobegon fate for regional Australia on the state and national news maps

Parent-child interaction in Nigerian families: conversation analysis, context and culture
This paper uses a conversation analysis (CA) approach to explore parent child interaction (PCI) within Nigerian families. We illustrate how speech and language therapists (SLTs), by using CA, can tailor recommendations according to the interactional style of each individual family that are consonant with the family’s cultural beliefs. Three parent-child dyads were videoed playing and talking together in their home environments. The analysis uncovered a preference for instructional talk similar to that used in the classroom. Closer examination revealed that this was not inappropriate when considering the context of the activities and their perceived discourse role. Furthermore, this was not necessarily at the expense of responsivity or semantic contingency. The preference for instructional talk appeared to reflect deeply held cultural beliefs about the role of adults and children within the family and it is argued that the cultural paradigm is vitally important to consider when evaluating PCI. Given a potential risk that such young children may be vulnerable in terms of language difficulties, we offer an example of how PCI can be enhanced to encourage language development without disrupting the naturally occurring talk or the underlying purpose of the interaction
A systematic review of the effectiveness of docetaxel and mitoxantrone for the treatment of metastatic hormone-refractory prostate cancer
A systematic review was performed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of docetaxel in combination with prednisolone (docetaxel is licensed in the UK for use in combination with prednisone or prednisolone for the treatment of patients with metastatic hormone-refractory prostate cancer. Prednisone is not used in the UK, but it is reasonable to use docetaxel plus prednisone data in this review of docetaxel plus prednisolone) for the treatment of metastatic hormone-refractory prostate cancer. A scoping search identified a trial of docetaxel plus prednisone vs mitoxantrone plus prednisone, but did not identify any trials comparing docetaxel plus prednisolone/prednisone with any other treatments. Therefore, we considered additional indirect evidence that would enable a comparison of docetaxel plus prednisolone/prednisone with other chemotherapy regimens and active supportive care. Systematic searching (upto April 2005) identified seven randomised controlled trials. One large well-conducted trial assessed docetaxel plus prednisone vs mitoxantrone plus prednisone; this showed statistically significant improvements with 3-weekly docetaxel in terms of overall survival, quality of life, pain response and PSA decline. Two other chemotherapy regimens that included docetaxel with estramustine also showed improved outcomes in comparison with mitoxantrone plus prednisone. Three trials that compared mitoxantrone plus corticosteroids with corticosteroids alone were identified and their results for overall survival combined, which showed very little difference between the two groups. The addition of clodronate to mitoxantrone plus prednisone showed no significant differences in comparison with mitoxantrone plus prednisone alone. The evidence suggests that chemotherapy regimens containing 3-weekly docetaxel are superior to mitoxantrone or corticosteroids alone
A Statistical Survey of Peculiar L and T Dwarfs in SDSS, 2MASS, and WISE
We present the final results from a targeted search for brown dwarfs with
unusual near-infrared colors. From a positional cross-match of SDSS, 2MASS and
WISE, we have identified 144 candidate peculiar L and T dwarfs. Spectroscopy
confirms that 20 of the objects are peculiar or are candidate binaries. Nine of
the 420 objects in our sample are young (200 Myr; 2.1%) and another 8
(1.9%) are unusually red with no signatures of youth. With a spectroscopic
color of 2.58 0.11 mag, one of the new objects, the L6 dwarf
2MASS J03530419+0418193, is among the reddest field dwarfs currently known and
is one of the reddest objects with no signatures of youth known to date. We
have also discovered another potentially very low gravity object, the L1 dwarf
2MASS J00133470+1109403, and independently identified the young L7 dwarf 2MASS
J00440332+0228112, first reported by Schneider and collaborators. Our results
confirm that signatures of low gravity are no longer discernible in low to
moderate resolution spectra of objects older than 200 Myr. The 1.9% of
unusually red L dwarfs that do not show other signatures of youth could be
slightly older, up to 400 Myr. In this case a red color may be
more diagnostic of moderate youth than individual spectral features. However,
its is also possible that these objects are relatively metal-rich, and so have
an enhanced atmospheric dust content.Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables, accepted to A
Parametric factory simulation for the responsive enterprise
Simulation offers a powerful way to investigate the boundaries of what can be achieved by a manufacturing system, demonstrating the impact of schedules and policy decisions such as the placement of buffers and the size of safety stocks. Unfortunately, the construction of factory models at the necessary level of detail is a time-consuming process, requiring specialist skills.
This paper describes a novel approach to the representation of logistic control within a simulated factory, and its implementation in a study of a business unit at Volvo Aero in Trollhättan, Sweden. Several innovative features were built into the model, making it possible for users who were not simulation experts to explore a broad range of scenarios. The resulting model architecture, as described in this paper, takes simulation out of the computer lab and places it in the hands of managers, as an enabler of the responsive enterprise
