    The frequency in Japanese of genetic variants of 22 proteins: V. Summary and comparison with data on Caucasians from the British Isles

    The frequencies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki of rare variants (represented in less than 2 % of the individuals surveyed) is summarized for a series of 22 proteins (25 polypeptides). The average number of persons examined for each protein was 3312. There are three pairs of homologous proteins in the series: PGM, and PGM, CA I and CA 11, and HGB A and A,. Only for the first pair is there a significant difference between the two in the total frequency and number of different kinds of variants; it is suggested this may reflect differences in the mutation rates of the corresponding structural genes. For 23 of these polypeptides, comparable data are available for British Caucasians. The average frequency of variants for loci in common in the two series is 2.0/1000 person determinations for Japanese and 1.6/1000 for Caucasoids. At two loci (PGMl and PHI) there were significantly more variants in Japanese than in British; these two loci account for the greater average frequency of variants in Japanese. However, a conservative comparison of number of diflerent variants (electromorphs) encountered, using the 0 statistic of Ewens (1972), yields no significant difference for any of the 22 possible contrasts. The potential usefulness of data of this type in reaching conclusions regarding comparability of mutation rates in two populations is discussed. For the present, the fact that one electromorph may shelter multiple different amino acid substitutions in a protein limits the inferences to be drawn from such contrasts.     Introducing an innovative surgical technique:gluteal turnover flap for posterior vaginal wall reconstruction :a case series

    Four patients with rectal cancer required reconstruction of a defect of the posterior vaginal wall. All patients received neoadjuvant (chemo)radiotherapy, followed by an en bloc (abdomino)perineal resection of the rectum and posterior vaginal wall. The extent of the vaginal defect necessitated closure using a tissue flap with skin island. The gluteal turnover flap was used for this purpose as an alternative to conventional more invasive myocutaneous flaps (gracilis, gluteus, or rectus abdominis). The gluteal turnover flap was created through a curved incision at a maximum width of 2.5 cm from the edge of the perineal wound, thereby creating a half-moon shape skin island. The subcutaneous fat was dissected toward the gluteal muscle, and the gluteal fascia was incised. Thereafter, the flap was rotated into the defect and the skin island was sutured into the vaginal wall defect. The contralateral subcutaneous fat was mobilized for perineal closure in the midline, after which no donor site was visible.The duration of surgery varied from 77 to 392 min, and the hospital stay ranged between 3 and 16 days. A perineal wound dehiscence occurred in two patients, requiring an additional VY gluteal plasty in one patient. Complete vaginal and perineal wound healing was achieved in all patients. The gluteal turnover flap is a promising least invasive technique to reconstruct posterior vaginal wall defects after abdominoperineal resection for rectal cancer.</p

    The frequency in Japanese of genetic variants of 22 proteins

    This paper presents the results of an electrophoretic survey of approximately 4000 individuals from the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, for four serum proteins: albumin, ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin and transferrin. The haptoglobin gene frequencies obtained for the HP 1 -HP 2 polymorphism are in agreement with earlier reports. Rare electrophoretic variants of albumin, ceruloplasmin and haptoglobin occur with frequencies of 2.48, 0.50 and 0.58 per 1000 determinations, respectively. The noteworthy finding of 8 distinct transferrin variants in these populations, with a combined frequency of 20.90 per 1000 determinations, is also presented. Four of these variants (D Ch1 , B 1 , B 3 and D hir2 which corresponds electrophoretically to D 4 ) have been reported in other populations in Japan, but the other five have not previously been differentiated.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66399/1/j.1469-1809.1977.tb01859.x.pd

    This paper presents the results of an electrophoretic survey of approximately 4000 individuals from Hiroshima and Nagasaki for four erythrocyte enzymes: isocitrate dehydrogenase, pepti- dase A, peptidase B, and phosphohexose isomerase. Also reported are the results for erythrocyte acid phosphatase for a subset of these individuals. The frequencies for the ACPf and ACPF alleles of the ACP, locus are in agreement with previously reported results from Japanese populations. Rare variants of ICD, PEPA, PEPB and PHI occur with frequencies varying from 0.25 to 7.2 per 1000 determinations. The relatively high frequency of the PHI 4RIR1 variant and some unusual features involving the effect of reducing agent on the electrophoretic pattern behaviour of some of the rare PHI variants detected during this study are discussed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65914/1/j.1469-1809.1978.tb00912.x.pd

    Characterization of a new variant of human red cell carbonic anhydrase I, CA if London (Glu-102→Lys)

    A new inherited variant of red cell carbonic anhydrase I (CA I), designated CA If London, was discovered during a survey of 1615 individuals from London, England. No electrophoretic variants of the other isozyme of carbonic anhydrase CA II, were observed in the same survey. Sequence analysis of a lysine-blocked tryptic peptide believed to contain the amino acid substitution in CA If showed that the glutamyl residue at position 102 had been substituted by a lysyl residue. This substitution results in a net increase of two positive charges in the mutant enzyme.     Application profiling and resource management for MapReduce

    Scale of data generated and processed is exponential growth in the Big Data ear. It poses a challenge that is far beyond the goal of a single computing system. Processing such vast amount of data on a single machine is impracticable in term of time or cost. Hence, distributed systems, which can harness very large clusters of commodity computers and processing data within restrictive time deadlines, are imperative. In this thesis, we target two aspects of distributed systems: application profiling and resource management. We study a MapReduce system in detail, which is a programming paradigm for large scale distributed computing, and presents solutions to tackle three key problems. Firstly, this thesis analyzes the characteristics of jobs running on the MapReduce system to reveal the problem—the Application scope of MapReduce has been extended beyond the original design goal that was large-scale data processing. This problem enables us to present a Workload Characteristic Oriented Scheduler (WCO), which strives for co-locating tasks of possibly different MapReduce jobs with complementing resource usage characteristics. Secondly, this thesis studies the current job priority mechanism focusing on resource management. In the MapReduce system, job priority only exists at scheduling level. High priority jobs are placed at the front of the scheduling queue and dispatched first. Resource, however, is fairly shared among jobs running at the same worker node without any consideration for their priorities. In order to resolve this, this thesis presents a non-intrusive slot layering solution, which dynamically allocates resource between running jobs based on their priority and efficiently reduces the execution time of high priority jobs while improves overall throughput. Last, based on the fact of underutilization of resource at each individual worker node, this thesis propose a new way, Local Resource Shaper (LRS), to smooth resource consumption of each individual job by automatically tuning the execution of concurrent jobs to maximize resource utilization while minimizing resource contention

    Biochemical characterization of the human carbonic anhydrase variant CA ih Hiroshima

    Some biochemical properties of a new red cell human carbonic anhydrase variant, CA Ih Hiroshima, have been determined. Evidence is presented that the amino acid substitution in the Japanese variant is not the same as the previously characterized CA Ic variant from Guam of similar electrophoretic mobility.     Electron Capture And Loss For 2.5-200-MeV 16S13++He Collisions

    Electron capture and loss cross sections have been measured for highly charged (q=13+) sulfur ions with energies 2.5-200 MeV colliding with helium. Electron capture varies by nearly six orders of magnitude over the energy range investigated, while electron loss varies by only about a factor of 2. The capture cross sections are in reasonable agreement with classical and empirical scaling rules, while the loss cross sections agree well with the plane-wave Born approximation. © 1986 The American Physical Society

    Enhanced Radiative Auger Emission From Lithiumlike S13+16

    The radiative Auger emission (RAE) from 0.946.25-MeV/u 16S13+ (lithiumlike) projectiles excited in collisions with He target atoms has been measured. For these highly stripped ions the intensity of RAE photons relative to K x-ray emission is enhanced by about a factor of five compared with theoretical calculations and an earlier experimental measurement for S ions with few electron vacancies. The enhancement of RAE for S13+ is qualitatively similar to results reported previously for lithiumlike 23V20+; however, some differences between S and V are evident. © 1990 The American Physical Society

    Resonant Electron Transfer And Excitation In Two-, Three-, And Four- Electron Caq +20 And Vq +23 Ions Colliding With Helium

    Significant new evidence is reported for resonant transfer and excitation in ion-atom collisions. This process, which is analogous to dielectronic recombination, occurs when a target electron is captured simultaneously with the excitation of the projectile followed by photon emission. Strong resonant behavior with structure, in agreement with theoretical calculations, is observed in the cross section for projectile K x rays coincident with single electron capture for 100-360-MeV Ca16+,17+,18+20 and 180-460-MeV V19+,20+,21+23 ions colliding with helium. © 1984 The American Physical Society
