Continuously wavelength-tunable high harmonic generation via soliton dynamics
We report generation of high harmonics in a gas-jet pumped by pulses
self-compressed in a He-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber through the
soliton effect. The gas-jet is placed directly at the fiber output. As the
energy increases the ionization-induced soliton blue-shift is transferred to
the high harmonics, leading to a emission bands that are continuously tunable
from 17 to 45 eV
Long-lived refractive index changes induced by femtosecond ionization in gas-filled single-ring photonic crystal fibers
We investigate refractive index changes caused by femtosecond photoionization
in a gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. Using spatially-resolved
interferometric side-probing, we find that these changes live for tens of
microseconds after the photoionization event - eight orders of magnitude longer
than the pulse duration. Oscillations in the megahertz frequency range are
simultaneously observed, caused by mechanical vibrations of the thin-walled
capillaries surrounding the hollow core. These two non-local effects can affect
the propagation of a second pulse that arrives within their lifetime, which
works out to repetition rates of tens of kilohertz. Filling the fiber with an
atomically lighter gas significantly reduces ionization, lessening the strength
of the refractive index changes. The results will be important for
understanding the dynamics of gas-based fiber systems operating at high
intensities and high repetition rates, when temporally non-local interactions

The objective of this study is in the critical analysis of the results of the lap and open surgery in the colorectal carcinoma, through the meta-analysis of the principal trials.
Patients and methods. A systematic search of the comparative studies has been made among lap and open surgery in the colorectal carcinoma, using PubMed and Cochrane Library. Among these, have been selected perspective studies containing the description of the surgical techniques, the perioperative results and the oncological long term results. Statistic analysis has been performed with the program NCSS (Kaysville 2006, Utah).
Results. From the revision of the literature, 7 perspective studies have checked fit to a meta-analysis, for a total of 3580 patients. Among the operative outcomes, has been observed, with statistically significant, a reduction of the blood loss and of the morbidity, an earlier resumption to passing flatus and to normal diet, a reduction of the postoperative hospitalization for the lap; shorter operative time is releaved for the open surgery. Statistically significant differences have emerged neither on the other surgical outcomes (included mortality) nor on relapset of illness (regional or metastasis), crab-correlated mortality, long term survival.
Conclusions. The laparoscopic can be considered a valid alternative to the traditional open surgery in the therapy of the colorectal carcinoma: the advantages consist in smaller trauma and reduction of morbidity and postoperative stay. The oncological results are the same of the open surgery
Near-Petahertz Fieldoscopy of Liquid
Measuring transient optical field is pivotal not only for understanding
ultrafast phenomena but also for quantitative detection of various molecular
species in a sample. In this work, we demonstrate near-petahertz electric field
detection of a few femtosecond pulses with 2oo attosecond temporal resolution,
10 detection dynamic range in electric field and sub-femtojoule detection
sensitivity, exceeding those reported by the current methods. By field-resolved
detection of the impulsively excited molecules in the liquid phase, termed
'femtosecond fieldoscopy', we demonstrate temporal isolation of the response of
the target molecules from those of the environment and the excitation pulse. In
a proof-of-concept analysis of aqueous and liquid samples, we demonstrate
field-sensitive detection of combination bands of 4.13 {\mu}mol ethanol for the
first time. This method expands the scope of aqueous sample analysis to higher
detection sensitivity and dynamic range, while the simultaneous direct
measurements of phase and intensity information pave the path towards
high-resolution biological spectro-microscop
Direct characterisation of tuneable few-femtosecond dispersive-wave pulses in the deep UV
Dispersive wave emission (DWE) in gas-filled hollow-core dielectric
waveguides is a promising source of tuneable coherent and broadband radiation,
but so far the generation of few-femtosecond pulses using this technique has
not been demonstrated. Using in-vacuum frequency-resolved optical gating, we
directly characterise tuneable 3fs pulses in the deep ultraviolet generated via
DWE. Through numerical simulations, we identify that the use of a pressure
gradient in the waveguide is critical for the generation of short pulses.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Effects of mixture and thinning in a tree farming valuable broadleaves plantation more than 20 years after the establishment.
The results of peduncolate Oak plantation trials where the Oak is mixed to wild Cherry and narrow-leaf Ash per line and per close mixture with different proportions (25% and 50%) of N-fixing species (Black Locust and Italian Alder) are described in the paper. The plantation, carried out in winter 1988-89, was framed into a reafforestation plan for spoil banks restoration. On a share of the plantation area, free thinnings foreseeing the release of about 70 target trees per hectare, were undertaken in 2001 and 2003; 21% and 27% of basal area were removed, respectively. In the latter trial, the crowns of target trees were completely isolated by felling all the surrounding trees. The performances of valuable timber broadleaves, the effects of intercropping and thinning on the growth of Oak target trees were analysed. Three inventories (2001, 2004 and 2008) and the annual monitoring of target trees growth were performed at the purpose. The two peduncolate Oak and narrow-leaf Ash trees showed the best performances among the set of valuable broadleaves, whilst wild cherry resulted not suited to local site conditions. A higher tree mortality occurred in the mixture with Black Locust. The mixture with both Nfixing species provided a stimulus to the Oak growth both in terms of dbh and tree height. Italian Alder resulted anyway less competitive and easy to manage, considering its progressive self-thinning, while Black Locust was aggressive enough to necessitate the control of its development by pollarding 7 years after the plantation. In the thinned plots, target trees showed significant diameter increments in comparison with control plots; maintaining year by year constant dbh increments of about 1 cm and crown’s diameter increment of about 50 cm. Intercropping with Italian Alder showed to be more effective than thinning on growth of the target trees
