Recent Results From the EU POF-PLUS Project: Multi-Gigabit Transmission Over 1 mm Core Diameter Plastic Optical Fibers

Recent activity to achieve multi-gigabit transmission over 1 mm core diameter graded-index and step-index plastic optical fibers for distances up to 50 meters is reported in this paper. By employing a simple intensity-modulated direct-detection system with pulse amplitude or digital multi-tone modulation techniques, low-cost transceivers and easy to install large-core POFs, it is demonstrated that multi-gigabit transmission up to 10 Gbit/s over 1-mm core diameter POF infrastructure is feasible. The results presented in this paper were obtained in the EU FP7 POF-PLUS project, which focused on applications in different scenarios, such as in next-generation in-building residential networks and in datacom applications

Abstract A new architecture of reconfigurable WDM-PON networks for the dynamic capacity allocation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The architecture based on an SOA gate allows 1µs switching time to the re-allocation of wavelength resources

    Designing In-Building Optical Fiber Networks

Optical fiber in-building networks carrying wired and wireless services can outperform CAT-5E networks regarding versatility and installation costs. POF-based point-to-point architectures are optimum for small buildings, and (optically routed) SMF-based bus architectures for larger buildings

    Optimisation of in-building optical networks

Abstract A single in-building optical fibre network can efficiently deliver wired and wireless services. Point-topoint architectures using POF are attractive for small buildings; for large buildings SMF-based all-optical bus architectures using weighted tap couplers are preferable

By using optical fibre, a single in-building network can offer many broadband services to both wired and wireless terminals. Multi-level modulation and dispersion-robust radio-over-fibre techniques allow the use of cost-effective multimode silica or plastic fibre

Photonic chip based transmitter optimization and receiver demultiplexing of a 1.28 Tbit/s OTDM signal

We demonstrate chip-based Tbaud optical signal processing for all-optical performance monitoring, switching and demultiplexing based on the instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity in a dispersion-engineered As 2S 3 planar waveguide. At the Tbaud transmitter, we use a THz bandwidth radiofrequency spectrum analyzer to perform all-optical performance monitoring and to optimize the optical time division multiplexing stages as well as mitigate impairments, for example, dispersion. At the Tbaud receiver, we demonstrate error-free demultiplexing of a 1.28 Tbit/s single wavelength, return-to-zero signal to 10 Gbit/s via four-wave mixing with negligible system penalty (< 0.5 dB). Excellent performance, including high fourwave mixing conversion efficiency and no indication of an error-floor, was achieved. Our results establish the feasibility of Tbaud signal processing using compact nonlinear planar waveguides for Tbit/s Ethernet applications

Performance evaluation of IR-UWB in short-range fiber communication using linear combination of monocycles

Abstract-We present the performance evaluation of impulse radio ultrawideband (IR-UWB) over fiber using a simple pulse design technique with a high fractional bandwidth. The technique, based on the linear combination of the first-order Gaussian derivatives with different pulse-shaping factors, shows full compliance with Federal Communications Commission mask requirements even in the most severely power-restricted GPS band. We validated our approach with experiments employing an intensity-modulation direct-detection scheme. The experimental setup uses a directly modulated DFB laser at 1302.56 nm and a multimode fiber-coupled photodetector with 24 m diameter photosensitive area. The transmission link consists of 25 km single-mode fiber or 4.4 km multimode fiber. Error-free transmission at 2 Gb/s is achieved over both fiber links. The result shows the proposed pulse-generation technique to be simple and cost-effective compared to higher order Gaussian derivative schemes. This can be implemented successfully to distribute UWB signals over optical links for access and in-building networks.
