Innovative spatial timber structures: workshops with physical modeling explorations from small to full scale
Architects and Engineers are educated and work within two separate cultures yet
they are both concerned with conceptual structural design. The collaboration between
the professions is especially important when designing buildings where the structure to
a great degree forms the spaces, as in the cases of form generating structures such as
gridshells, reciprocal frames, space trusses etc . This paper describes several specialist
research based workshops developed at KA over the last two years that use physical
modelling of 1:1 innovative timber load-bearing structures such as gridshells and
reciprocal frames
Shock and vibration response of multistage structure
Study of the shock and vibration response of a multistage structure employed analytically, lumped-mass, continuous-beam, multimode, and matrix-iteration methods. The study was made on the load paths, transmissibility, and attenuation properties along a longitudinal axis of a long, slender structure with increasing degree of complexity
Low-energy behavior of spin-liquid electron spectral functions
We calculate the electron spectral function for a spin-liquid with a spinon
Fermi surface and a Dirac spin-liquid. Calculations are based upon the
slave-rotor mean-field theory. We consider the effect of gauge fluctuations
using a simple model and find the behavior is not strongly modified. The
results, distinct from conventional Mott insulator or band theory predictions,
suggest that measuring the spectral function e.g. via ARPES could help in the
experimental verification and characterization of spin liquids.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Characteristics of Postural Muscle Activity in Response to A Motor-Motor Task in Elderly
The purpose of the current study was to evaluate postural muscle performance of older adults in response to a combination of two motor tasks perturbations. Fifteen older participants were instructed to perform a pushing task as an upper limb perturbation while standing on a fixed or sliding board as a lower limb perturbation. Postural responses were characterized by onsets and magnitudes of muscle activities as well as onsets of segment movements. (Please see full abstract article
