The Effect of the Minimum Server Wage on Restaurant Guest Tipping Behavior and Perceptions
Restaurant server income is predominantly composed of tips received from guests and the minimum server wage received from restaurants. Grounded in equity theory, this dissertation investigated the effect of the minimum server wage, in combination with established antecedents of voluntary tipping, on tipping rate and examined guest perceptions of fairness of the minimum server wage and three prevalent tipping policies (voluntary tipping, automatic service charge, and service inclusive pricing). Two experiments were conducted, a 2 (minimum server wage) x 2 (service quality) experimental design, and a 2 (minimum server wage) x 3 (tipping policy) experimental design. The results revealed that the minimum server wage and voluntary tipping familiarity have moderating roles on the indirect effect of service quality on tipping rate via perceived fairness of voluntary tipping. In addition, voluntary tipping has higher perceived fairness and higher perceived value than automatic service charge and service inclusive pricing

Calcium-Sensing Receptor Regulates Cytosolic [Ca 2+ ] and Plays a Major Role in the Development of Pulmonary Hypertension.
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disease characterized by elevated pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) leading to right heart failure and premature death. The increased PVR results in part from pulmonary vascular remodeling and sustained pulmonary vasoconstriction. Excessive pulmonary vascular remodeling stems from increased pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cell (PASMC) proliferation and decreased PASMC apoptosis. A rise in cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]cyt) in PASMC is a major trigger for pulmonary vasoconstriction and a key stimulus for PASMC proliferation and migration, both contributing to the development of pulmonary vascular remodeling. PASMC from patients with idiopathic PAH (IPAH) have increased resting [Ca2+]cyt and enhanced Ca2+ influx. Enhanced Ca2+ entry into PASMC due to upregulation of membrane receptors and/or Ca2+ channels may contribute to PASMC contraction and proliferation and to pulmonary vasoconstriction and pulmonary vascular remodeling. We have shown that the extracellular Ca2+-sensing receptor (CaSR), which is a member of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) subfamily C, is upregulated, and the extracellular Ca2+-induced increase in [Ca2+]cyt is enhanced in PASMC from patients with IPAH in comparison to PASMC from normal subjects. Pharmacologically blockade of CaSR significantly attenuate the development and progression of experimental pulmonary hypertension in animals. Additionally, we have demonstrated that dihydropyridine Ca2+ channel blockers (e.g., nifedipine), which are used to treat PAH patients but are only effective in 15-20% of patients, activate CaSR resulting in an increase in [Ca2+]cyt in IPAH-PASMC, but not normal PASMC. Our data indicate that CaSR functionally couples with transient receptor potential canonical (TRPC) channels to mediate extracellular Ca2+-induced Ca2+ influx and increase in [Ca2+]cyt in IPAH-PASMC. Upregulated CaSR is necessary for the enhanced extracellular Ca2+-induced increase in [Ca2+]cyt and the augmented proliferation of PASMC in patients with IPAH. This review will highlight the pathogenic role of CaSR in the development and progression of PAH
SAMSON: Spectral Absorption-fluorescence Microscopy System for ON-site-imaging of algae
This paper presents SAMSON, a Spectral Absorption-fluorescence Microscopy
System for ON-site-imaging of algae within a water sample. Designed to be
portable and low-cost for on-site use, the optical sub-system of SAMSON
consists of a mixture of low-cost optics and electronics, designed specifically
to capture both fluorescent and absorption responses from a water sample. The
graphical user interface (GUI) sub-system of SAMSON was designed to enable
flexible visualisation of algae in the water sample in real-time, with the
ability to perform fine-grained exposure control and illumination wavelength
selection. We demonstrate SAMSON's capabilities by equipping the system with
two fluorescent illumination sources and seven absorption illumination sources
to enable the capture of multispectral data from six different algae species
(three from the Cyanophyta phylum (blue-green algae) and three from the
Chlorophyta phylum (green algae)). The key benefit of SAMSON is the ability to
perform rapid acquisition of fluorescence and absorption data at different
wavelengths and magnification levels, thus opening the door for machine
learning methods to automatically identify and enumerate different algae in
water samples using this rich wealth of data
Mobile Cryptocurrency for Development in Asia-Moderating Effects of Advantage, Complexity, and Compatibility
Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been proven to promote the development of countries and regions. Asia is one of the leading regions in adopting new ICTs like mobile payment, artificial intelligence, and blockchain. The innovative technologies, relevant business values, and impacts related to blockchain are overestimated in the short term yet underestimated for a long time. While the blockchain is in the hype of both research and practice, there is minimal research related to the blockchain adoption. Among many blockchain-based applications, cryptocurrency been widely utilized in Asia. This Emergent Research Forum (ERF) Paper provides preliminary research in understanding how blockchain-based cryptocurrency revolutionizes ICT for development in Asia. This research introduces a model that considers Cryptocurrency/Bitcoin Innovation Factors (BIF), including cryptocurrency advantage, cryptocurrency complexity, and cryptocurrency compatibility as moderators. The survey method is selected and will be conducted in the future
A dynamic neural field model of leaky prosody: proof of concept
Recent work has shown that lexical items come to take on the phonetic characteristics of the prosodic environments in which they are typically produced, a phenomenon referred to as "leaky prosody". Focusing on pitch patterns in Mandarin, we show that leaky prosody can be derived from a flat (i.e., non-transformational, non-optimizing) model of speech production. Formalized using Dynamic Field Theory, in our model, lexical, phonological, and prosodic inputs each exert forces on a Dynamic Neural Field representing pitch. Notably, the forces exerted by these inputs reflect surface distributions in a large corpus of spontaneous speech. Our simulations showed that the flat model derives the short timescale effect of prosodic prominence on pitch production as well as the longer timescale effect of leaky prosody. By updating lexical items based on surface phonetic form, words that are consistently produced in high/low prosodic prominence positions take on the phonetic characteristics of those environments
