    Nanoparticle deposition in hydrogenated amorphous silicon films during rf plasma deposition

    Particles of 2–14 nm diameter, representing 10(– 4)–10(– 3) of the film volume, are observed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in thin films of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) grown by rf-plasma-enhanced deposition using optimized conditions. The particles are produced in the discharge and incorporated in the film during growth, in contradiction to expected particle trapping by discharge sheath fields. The interfaces between the nanoparticles and the homogeneous film can produce low-density regions that form electronic defects in a-Si:H films

    The morphology of a series of thin films of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) grown by plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition (PECVD) is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy. The substrates were atomically flat, oxide-free, single-crystal silicon. Films were grown in a PECVD chamber directly connected to a surface analysis chamber with no air exposure between growth and measurement. The homogeneous roughness of the films increases with film thickness. The quantification of this roughening is achieved by calculation of both rms roughness and lateral correlation lengths of the a-Si:H film surface from the height difference correlation functions of the measured topographs. Homogeneous roughening occurs over the film surface due to the collective behavior of the flux of depositing radical species and their interactions with the growth surface

    In recent times, two virtualization approaches have become dominant: hardware-level and operating system-level virtualization. They differ by where they draw the virtualization boundary between the virtualizing and the virtualized part of the system, resulting in vastly different properties. We argue that these two approaches are extremes in a continuum, and that boundaries in between the extremes may combine several good properties of both. We propose abstractions to make up one such new virtualization boundary, which combines hardware-level flexibility with OS-level resource sharing. We implement and evaluate a first prototype

    What Drives Engagement in Professional Associations? A National Survey of Occupational Therapy Students

    Exploring the factors that influence occupational therapy (OT) and occupational therapy assistant (OTA) students to join and participate in professional associations is critical to determine how to extend engagement after graduation. Previous research on health care student participation in professional associations has not included OT or OTA students. The researchers conducted an online quantitative national pilot survey to explore the perceptions of OT/OTA students and to identify supports and challenges for membership. The purposive sampling of currently enrolled students took place over three months in 2017, resulting in 251 responses representing all geographic regions in the United States. The researcher-developed survey evaluated student perceptions of professional membership challenges and supports at both the state and national levels. There was a statistically significant relationship between students participating in an organized student association and reporting membership in their state and national associations. Students sought out professional association memberships, even when their academic institutions did not provide support. A majority of students indicated that they planned to be American Occupational Therapy Association members after graduation. Students suggested that more economical membership, conference registration, and academic support could encourage active participation and engagement in their professional associations, extending beyond graduation. This study adds the OT student voice to the discussion about professional membership and engagement to the existing literature

    Construction of silicon nanocolumns with the scanning tunneling microscope

    Voltage pulses to a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) are used to construct silicon columns of 30–100 Å diameter and up to 200 Å height on a silicon surface and on the end of a tungsten probe. These nanocolumns have excellent conductivity and longevity, and they provide an exceptional new ability to measure the shapes of nanostructures with a STM. This construction methodology and these slender yet robust columns provide a basis for nanoscale physics, lithography, and technology

    METAREP: JCVI metagenomics reports—an open source tool for high-performance comparative metagenomics

    Summary: JCVI Metagenomics Reports (METAREP) is a Web 2.0 application designed to help scientists analyze and compare annotated metagenomics datasets. It utilizes Solr/Lucene, a high-performance scalable search engine, to quickly query large data collections. Furthermore, users can use its SQL-like query syntax to filter and refine datasets. METAREP provides graphical summaries for top taxonomic and functional classifications as well as a GO, NCBI Taxonomy and KEGG Pathway Browser. Users can compare absolute and relative counts of multiple datasets at various functional and taxonomic levels. Advanced comparative features comprise statistical tests as well as multidimensional scaling, heatmap and hierarchical clustering plots. Summaries can be exported as tab-delimited files, publication quality plots in PDF format. A data management layer allows collaborative data analysis and result sharing
