    VERA Geodetic Activities

    This report briefly describes the geodetic activities of VERA in the year 2012. The regular geodetic observations are carried out both in K- and S/X-bands. The frequency of regular observations is three times a month-twice for the VERA internal observations in K-band. The networks of the S/X sessions are JADE of GSI and IVS-T2. The raw data of the T2 and JADE sessions are electronically transferred to the Bonn, Haystack, and GSI correlators via Internet. Gravimetric observations are carried out at the VERA stations. An SG was installed at Mizusawa and placed in the vicinity of the VERA antenna in order to monitor vertical displacement at the end of 2008, and the observations continued throughout the year. Also at the VERA-Ishigakijima station, continuous operation of the SG started in 2012. The crustal movements generated by the 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tohoku continued during 2012, and displacement of the VERA-Mizusawa position by post-seismic creeping continued

    Identifying the sources of energy use change: Multiple calibration decomposition analysis and structural decomposition analysis

    Decomposition methodologies are requisite to identify the sources of changes in energy use or carbon dioxide emissions. This paper is an inquiry into the theoretical properties of such decomposition methodologies. The study first presents our new decomposition methodology – the Multiple Calibration Decomposition Analysis (MCDA) – as a tool for the investigation. Then, it theoretically reexamines an established decomposition methodology – the Structural Decomposition Analysis proposed by Casler and Rose (1998). Subsequently, the study empirically investigates the properties of both methodologies, applying them to an actual case: the changes in energy use and carbon dioxide emissions in Japan during the oil crises period, when the oil price had a significant influence on the economy. The result shows that understanding the theoretical properties of decomposition methodologies is essential for a precise interpretation of empirical results

    Influence of brain-derived neurotrophic factor on pathfinding of dentate granule cell axons, the hippocampal mossy fibers

    Mossy fibers, the dentate granule cell axons, are generated throughout an animal's lifetime. Mossy fiber paths and synapses are primarily restricted to the stratum lucidum within the CA3 region. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a neurotrophin family protein that activates Trk neurotrophin receptors, is highly expressed in the stratum lucidum in an activity-dependent manner. The addition of a Trk neurotrophin receptor inhibitor, K252a, to cultured hippocampal slices induced aberrant extension of mossy fibers into ectopic regions. BDNF overexpression in granule cells ameliorated the mossy fiber pathway abnormalities caused by a submaximal dose of K252a. A similar rescue was observed when BDNF was expressed in CA3 pyramidal cells, most notably in mossy fibers distal to the expression site. These findings are the first to clarify the role of BDNF in mossy fiber pathfinding, not as an attractant cue but as a regulator, possibly acting in a paracrine manner. This effect of BDNF may be as a signal for new fibers to fasciculate and extend further to form synapses with neurons that are far from active BDNF-expressing synapses. This mechanism would ensure the emergence of new independent dentate gyrus-CA3 circuits by the axons of new-born granule cells

    Comparison of Reimbursement Pricing Systems for Medical Devices in Japan and Other Countries

    In this article, we discuss the current status of the reimbursement price system for medical devices in Germany, France, the UK, the US, and Australia, which are the reference countries for the “foreign price adjustment system” in determining insurance reimbursement prices, and also provide implications for Japan. While Germany, the UK, and the US generally have reimbursement systems where medical devices are reimbursed as part of lumpsum payment, in other countries, as with Japan’s specified insurance medical devices, individual reimbursement prices are set. In countries that primarily implement lumpsum payments, there is a system of adding a certain period of reimbursement price increase to compensate for the decrease in medical institutions’ revenue resulting from the price increase of improved products. In addition, there are other support systems for collecting clinical evidence, which serve as examples for future discussions in Japan to promote the appropriate introduction of new medical devices

    Preparation and Characterization of Additional Metallic Element-Containing Tubular Iron Oxides of Bacterial Origin

    Biogenic microtubular iron oxides (BIOXs) derived from Leptothrix spp. are known as promising multifunctional materials for industrial applications such as ceramic pigments and catalyst carriers. Here, we report unprecedented BIOX products with additive depositions of various metallic elements prepared by a newly devised "two-step" method using an artificial culture system of Leptothrix cholodnii strain OUMS1; the method comprises a biotic formation of immature organic sheaths and subsequent abiotic deposition of Fe and intended elements on the sheaths. Chemical composition ratios of the additional elements Al, Zr, and Ti in the respective BIOXs were arbitrarily controllable depending on initial concentrations of metallic salts added to reaction solutions. Raman spectroscopy exemplified an existence of Fe-O-Al linkage in the Al-containing BIOX matrices. Time-course analyses revealed the underlying physiological mechanism for the BIOX formation. These results indicate that our advanced method can contribute greatly to creations of innovative bioderived materials with improved functionalities
