An Andalusian chronicler, contemporary of the first years of the Spanish settlement in America, tells us with newly-born hendecasyllabic verses all he lived through as a protagonist. His work, the longest poem written in our language, is a source for history, bears witness to the political and administrative institutions, to the foundation of towns and villages, to the delimmitation of the new land. And above all, to the encouter of so distant cultures which little by little melt into crossbreeding. Is the work of Castellanos a truly account of authentic facts and imaginative escape which hardly masks the delicate exposition of his memory. The reporter, an offspring of the Middle Age and the recently staged Renaissance, versifies with infinite patience amidst the solitude and strangeness of the new world.

    Global War, Global Catastrophe

Winner of the World War One Historical Association’s 2021 Norman B. Tomlinson, Jr. Prize Global War, Global Catastrophe presents a history of the First World War as an all-consuming industrial war that forcibly reshaped the international environment and, with it, impacted the futures of all the world’s people. Narrated chronologically, and available open access, the authors identify key themes and moments that radicalized the war’s conduct and globalized its impact, affecting neutral and belligerent societies alike. These include Germany’s invasion of Belgium and Britain’s declaration of war in 1914, the expansion of economic warfare in 1915, anti-imperial resistance, the Russian revolutions of 1917 and the United States’ entry into the war. Each chapter explains how individuals, communities, nation-states and empires experienced, considered and behaved in relationship to the conflict as it evolved into a total global war. Above all, the book argues that only by integrating the history of neutral and subject communities can we fully understand what made the First World War such a globally transformative event. This book offers an accessible and readable overview of the major trajectories of the global history of the conflict. It offers an innovative history of the First World War and an important alternative to existing belligerent-centric studies. Negotiating the Aftermath of Forced Migration: A View from the Intersection of War and Migration Studies in the Digital Age

This introductory essay revisits the handling of mass displacement caused by Nazi Germany and the Second World War during the 1940s and 1950s from the intersection of three corresponding perspectives: reflexive migration research, war studies, and digital methods. Whereas "displaced persons" simply seem to be a given in much of existing research, we propose to reflect on categories, terms, narratives, and approaches to gain a refined understanding of how migration and mobility are negotiated. To this end, the article applies spatial, normative, and chronological models used in forced migration studies, adopts the concept of migration regimes, and opts to deconstruct the production of meaning within institutions created to regulate the aftermath of forced migration. At the same time we engage in the discussion of digital methods and “big data” in historical migration research to explore new ways to use digitized sources in innovative ways to both reconstruct lives and pathways, patterns in decision making and the cultural translation of “migration” into personal files, statistics, and textual as well as visual accounts

Setting reference level in the human safety guidelines via nerve activation intercomparison at IF

International guidelines/standards have been published for human protection from electromagnetic field exposure. The research in the intermediate frequencies (IF: 300 Hz-10 MHz) is scattered unlike for other frequencies, and thus the limit prescribed in the guidelines/standards are different by a factor of 10. The IEEE International Committee on Electromagnetic Safety has published a research agenda for exploring the electrostimulation thresholds. However, the consistency of the excitation models for specific target tissue needs to be revised. For this purpose, we present the first intercomparison study using multiphysics modelling to investigate stimulation thresholds during transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). To define the stimulation threshold, a noninvasive technique for brain stimulation has been used. In this study, by incorporating individual neurons into electromagnetic computation in realistic head models, stimulation thresholds can be determined. The study case of one subject showed that the allowable external magnetic field strength in the current guidelines/standard is conservative
