Self-Organizing Word Map for Context-Based Document Classification

    Get PDF
In this paper, a novel SOM-based system for document organization is presented. The purpose of the system is the classification of a document collection in terms of document content. The system possesses a two-level hybrid connectionist architecture that comprises (i) an automatically created word map using a SOM, which functions as a feature extraction module and (ii) a supervised MLP-based classifier, which provides the final classification result. The experiments, which have been performed on Modern Greek text documents, indicate that the proposed system separates effectively the different types of text

Using particle swarm optimization to accurately identify syntactic phrases in free text

    No full text
The present article reviews the application of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms to optimize a phrasing model, which splits any text into linguistically-motivated phrases. In terms of its functionality, this phrasing model is equivalent to a shallow parser. The phrasing model combines attractive and repulsive forces between neighbouring words in a sentence to determine which segmentation points are required. The extrapolation of phrases in the specific application is aimed towards the automatic translation of unconstrained text from a source language to a target language via a phrase-based system, and thus the phrasing needs to be accurate and consistent to the training data. Experimental results indicate that PSO is effective in optimising the weights of the proposed parser system, using two different variants, namely sPSO and AdPSO. These variants result in statistically significant improvements over earlier phrasing results. An analysis of the experimental results leads to a proposed modification in the PSO algorithm, to prevent the swarm from stagnation, by improving the handling of the velocity component of particles. This modification results in more effective training sequences where the search for new solutions is extended in comparison to the basic PSO algorithm. As a consequence, further improvements are achieved in the accuracy of the phrasing module

Identification of key music symbols for optical music recognition and on-screen presentation

    No full text
A novel optical music recognition (OMR) system is put forward, where the custom-made on-screen presentation of the music score (MS) is promoted via the recognition of key music symbols only. The proposed system does not require perfect manuscript alignment or noise removal. Following the segmentation of each MS page into systems and, subsequently, into staves, staff lines, measures and candidate music symbols (CMS\u27s), music symbol recognition is limited to the identification of the clefs, accidentals and time signatures. Such an implementation entails significantly less computational effort than that required by classic OMR systems, without an observable compromise in the quality of the on-screen presentation of the MS. The identification of the music symbols of interest is performed via probabilistic neural networks (PNN\u27s), which are trained on a small set of exemplars from the MS itself. The initial results are promising in terms of efficiency, identification accuracy and quality of viewing. \ua9 2011 IEEE

A general regression artificial neural network for two-phase flow regime identification

    No full text
Supplementing the collection of artificial neural network methodologies devised for monitoring energy producing installations, a general regression artificial neural network is proposed for the identification of the two-phase flow that occurs in the coolant channels of boiling water reactors. The utilization of a limited number of image features derived from radiography images affords the proposed approach with efficiency and non-invasiveness. Additionally, the application of counter-clustering to the input patterns prior to training accomplishes an 80% reduction in network size as well as in training and test time. Cross-validation tests confirm accurate on-line flow regime identification. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Aging aircraft wiring: a proactive management methodology

    Get PDF
During the last years, military budgets have been dramatically reduced and the services have been unable to acquire sufficient new systems. Military aviation is one of the areas that have been severely impacted. The result is that the current fleet faces significant aging aircraft problems. Aircraft wiring is one of the areas that have severely affected by the aging process. Recent accidents involving aging wiring problems and reduced operational readiness due to aging wiring have made clear that aging aircraft wiring presents a difficult and complicated problem for the military aviation. However, current maintenance practices fail short in successfully inspecting and maintaining wiring. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a proactive management plan to deal with aging wiring. The objective is to come up with a systematic process in order to identify and prevent serious failures caused by electrical faults of wiring systems. This process will be based on the principle of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM)http://archive.org/details/agingircraftwiri109451090
